Milgard Evergreen windows delivered Yesterday and we spent the day installing some of the ground floor windows. To meet the California title 24 energy code these aluminum windows are dual layered aluminum with a plastic composite in the center to minimize heat transition from outdoors to indoors.
The 4’Tall X 6’Wide windows weigh somewhere around 300+ lbs. so rigged up a setup on the Kubota to help in the installation.
Now for the second story windows will do the same with the use of the Snorkel lift to help minimize the risk of damaging the windows during installation.
One window arrive with a crack on the outer glass so will need to deal with that this upcoming week.
We had seen a house on the Colorado River just up river from our Arizona vacation home that had the Evergreen colored windows installed and loved them. Adds a high end look to the home especially with the awning style windows throughout our build.

The rest of the windows will arrive this afternoon along with a ton of insulation for the home. In addition, they are to be shipping the 3 massive glass garage doors today also. Working from home for the next week but will then go all in on the installation of windows and doors if all goes to plan.
The only issue is that we hit 100F yesterday and again today so running to the RV's AC during breaks to somewhat recover. Hopefully cools down for a bit prior to full on summer arriving!

Installed all but a couple windows this past week along with most of the siding. Two windows arrived with opaque glass for some reason so they’ll need to go back to Milgard to change to the Evergreen glass instead.
50 plus rolls of Insulation arrived so can now get the final roof panels on the living quarters installed.

Buildingup, all new stock from a company our of Arizona called Western Steel. Cor-ten and Tru-ten are the two that I know of manufacturing this type of metal siding.

Manufacturers comments: Corten steel (often referred to as Cor–Ten) is a weather resistant steel which could more accurately be termed as an "Atmospheric Corrosion Resistant Steel". It is a copper chromium alloy steel – this alloy displays a greater level of resistance to atmospheric weathering when compared to other unalloyed steels.

Basically allows surface rust that then protects the core of the metal for a long life particularly here in Cali where rain is minimal.

I'm loving this build so far. Big fan of the modern/industrial combination. I'm surprised how much the tint of the glass elevates the look.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses both in the living quarters and shop side. Based on framing it looks like the living side has a second story. Out of curiosity, whats the plan for the staircase? I find they can really add to the look when done right. Based on how well thought out everything else is with the look, I'm guessing that's in the master plan.

Sam Young, you are correct that we will have a second story which will be the “Loft Style” open master bedroom, bath and walk in closet. In addition we decided to put an loft office in the shop area whereas access will be from both the bedroom area and the shop with its own set of stairs.

This will also give a second egress method in an emergency if ever needed.

In the initial plan the front 16’X16’ was to be a carport but decided to enclose it and use it as the entry. This allows us to have the stairs come straight down ending to the right of the front entry door. Not sure exactly at this point how I will build the stairs, as the gears are still turning on design, but I was able to gather up some beams and planks that came out of an old burnt down flour mill in Oregon that I am trying to use.

I am also building a 3” thick, 9’ tall “Dutch” front door out of the planks that will have a ton of Rustic hardware that I have collected (square head nails, square washers, hand built hinges and door handles). Want the look that it would take 3 full grown men to open it but have all roller bearing hinges making it effortless to open and close.

You may have said it, but what brand windows did you use?
Also is there anything special about a window that is used on a metal building? I want to add some windows to my own building and wondering once I install the frames would I just use any window I want and install J-trim around it and caulk?

Milgard is the brand and were the only ones who could provide the aluminum frames with a heat barrier to stop transfer of heat and cold from the outside to the inside. This is all to be in compliance with California code title 24.

The windows are exactly the same as what I have used in other wood home builds.

As for the J-trim, You may already be an expert but there is a good youtube video from RR Buildings showing how to cut and bend each piece to keep water from migrating into the walls.

I like the idea of the staircase coming down to the main entrance. My vote is I-beams for the stringers with the rustic wood used for the treads (floating with no risers). I'll have to see if I can dig up some pictures of what I'm envisioning.
I like that you'll be able to go straight from the bedroom area to the shop. Nice when getting changed and headed out to work or coming in and wanting to go straight to cleanup. Really looking forward to seeing it all come together.

SamYoung, I do have some left over beams that might fit the bill for stair stringers that were delivered with my building. I think they made a mistake and sent me someone else's components but when I tried to contact them to pick up they had no interest.
SO am I understanding your statement of "Floating with no risers" meaning using one large stringer down the center of the treads instead of one on each side giving the treads a floating look?

Partially. Improper nomenclature on my part. I was thinking I-beam strings down each side with old board treads in between. By floating I meant no solid riser/kick plates.

I do like your idea. I've seen the floating i-beam mono and double stringers where the strings are underneath. definitely a cleaner look from above.

I like them both, but it depends on what look you're going for. The stringers on the side give more of an industrial look and the stringers underneath definitely feel more modern. I tend to trend towards the more industrial side, but it depends on the aesthetic you're going for.

Sam, thanks for the input and pics. I think the double stringers made up of metal beams with the wooded treads looks best for our build.
An issue I am having is that under the stairs will be a half bath and not sure how I could implement that into this style of stairway. If I had some sort of slanted roof/ceiling on the bath it just seems like it would be a dust and debris collector and a pain to clean.
Would love to have the open look through the stairs as it gives the room bigger feel when walking into the entryway.
I will try and get some better pics of the entry where the landing will be and also the cross beam where the stairs will tie into as the attached pics are a little hard to read.

Very nice build! Killer views and location. Love lots of windows and think the ability to open your living space to the garage is wonderful and perfect for entertaining, maybe this door opens the living space to the outdoors.... Either way, going to be excellent. Looking forward to seeing it all come together and will be interested in seeing that Dutch door you talked about get built.

Yes ZRX, good catch as there is not a full thread being used due to bolt length. Trying to find a place to purchase 16 of the button head style bolts as a normal head won’t work for this application.

Bathroom under the stairs definitely complicated things. Agreed the slanted ceiling will be a dirt trap. We have a plexy slant ceiling under the steps in our tool crib at work and it's always filthy.
Possibly do black kick plates set back as far as you can. They'd still give an illusion of depth and would be vertical so they wouldn't capture dirt.

First post and great place to start. Really nice work. Had a comment on foam insulation. I’ve had good experiences with Hulsey Roofing. They’ve done exterior spray-on roof insulation on several of our commercial buildings in LA. They also do a lot of work for wineries up and down the coast. Read about your “tons of rolls of insulation” but also thought you’re waiting on the shop portion. Might be worth a call for a quote if you’re still interested. Our roofing quotes were very reasonable. Also, I’m currently in SLO and may take you up on that drop-by-thirsty offer.

You may have already answered this before, but did you find the exterior corrugated panels already rusted or was there a salt-process you did to speed-up the rust/corrosion? I'd love to do something similar on a much smaller scale for the inside of my shop using the corrugated panels.

I am really digging the garage doors too. I wish it wasn't so damned hot here or else I'd be doing something similar. Like I said in another thread; We are already building a greenhouse, and we don't need two.

The Corten siding comes raw From Western Metal and will rust over time. You can oil down once you get it where you want it and delay the rusting or just let it do its thing as we are doing.

Spent the day installing the first glass garage door as seen in photos.

Ran out of time. Did Estrella, Pappy's, Tin City Cider, Negranti, Barrelhouse & then back into town & hit the steakhouse at the PR Inn.
This morning hit a few antique shops around downtown PR & that one on Ramona Drive on the way to TinCity, (it's a gold mine)
Then it was down the 46 to the coast & head south while looking for somewhere for lunch. I will never visit downtown SLO again as long as I live.
Ended up at the Cape Cod Eatery & Taphouse in Pismo (great burgers).
Then blasted along the 166 back to the 5. At one point was behind a big rig on 166 that was apparently being drive by Mario Andretti. He was rolling over 90mph several times & was around 70mph through the sweepers.

ZRX, definitely a lot to do in Paso with all of the wineries, breweries and restaurants. Throw in Pismo Beach, Lake Nacimiento, the Mid State Fair and all the concert venues and the place is booming!

If you were at Estrella out East of town you could of looked up on the West side mountains of Paso and seen our build from there. Stands out like a sore thumb as it is massive in size.

We’ll be headed to Barrelhouse on the Harley today as it is going to be another 100 degree plus day. They were able to stay open The last time we were there as they claim to be a restaurant that serves food by selling you a cup of noodles with your first beer. Brilliant!

The one pic is of the new storefront glass door that we installed and will match the glass garage door in the living room going onto the patio.

New Dutch door being installed. Build it out of old reclaimed wood that came out of a burnt down flour mill in Oregon.
Wrapped in 1.5” steel angle as to “control” expansion of wood. It pivots 8” from the side and has flanged bearings inset with 1” pivot pins.
Ordered a double pane Evergreen glass that will be inserted within the upper portion.

Great design and its looking great, I really like the big covered space. Wish I had that although not sure I am in the right climate to use it a lot.

The windows with the tint are a great touch and sounds like its thoroughly functional to boot!

Looking forward to progress as it happens I am notorious for scope-creep and wanting to delve into tangential projects lol.

ZRX, Funny as our Fox Red Lab has a family of Hedgehogs.

Shorty, The door will be left to weather. Made of 3” thick old wood so weathered already from years of service in the flour mill it came from. California weather in our area won’t damage to much in my lifetime. Metal frame will also keep it from expanding and contracting too much I’m hope.
The look We are going for is rough and worn as if it came out of an old barn anyways so loving the way it came out so far.
