They are having a sidewalk sale at the location near my office.

I went over at 8AM to pick up a bunch of stuff I have been neededing for the warehouse.

Purchased:

US General 5 drawer tool cart
Impact Driver-Battery
Pancake 3 Gall Compressor
Grinder
Sanding tool
Air Hose and tip kit
Plastic RM type cart.

I have a few 25% off and individual coupons.

Paid and left.

Looked at my reciept when I got back and I see that they charged me full price on the cart. I call and the manager tells me, no problem, come down and we will credit it. I went during lunch to get my credit about 30 bucks and the manager tells me to get at the end of the line. There were like 100 people on line for 4 registers.

I tell him, I waited on line to buy the stuff and your cashier messed up. I gave her the cupon and she made the error. I am not asking for more that I am owed for a credit but i dont want to wait on line.

He tells me come back later or tomorrow. I feel like call the CC company and disputing 30 dollars worth of the charge..............

Just friggin pissed.

If I'd been standing in line and you jumped in front of me for a refund I'd be pissed. It works both ways, dude.

Chill. You're going to get your money. Is this really worth getting worked up over?

Wow. As a former store manager, the manager should either do one of a couple of things...

Open a register to do the price adjustment without starting a new line.

If that isn't possible, they should have taken the receipt from you and started the return process after the next transaction without you having to wait in line. This was THEIR mistake and you wouldn't even be in the store except for THEIR error.

The only other choice is to come back next week and a complimentary gift card should be part of the transaction for inconveniencing you and wasting your valuable time.

No bent rules. I took a few employees with me and rang up each large purchase separatly.

+1

It does **** you have to make another trip.

But it sounds like they already bent the rules in your favor by letting you use " a few" 25% off coupons, when the rules probably say you can only use one. Seems like you're getting a good deal. I would recommend not getting your pants in too much of a wad and return when they aren't so busy.

Having spent years in retail, I can understand the frenzy that a sale can generate, but -

I don't understand why the manager couldn't handle it at the computer in the office. Every retail place I worked, the office had access to the POS system. Heck, as a shipper, I could make sales from the receiving desk. Once he handled the paperwork side of the issue, he only had to wait for the next time the cash drawer was open to hand over the refund.

The manager may have been overwhelmed by the sale, but it should only have taken a few minutes to take care of the issue. Bad management IMO.

Dude, its the time and extra trip more than the $ . Thanks for your constructive answer.

I apprecaite it.

Have a great weekend

I agree... the real pain in the *** when returning something or getting a bill corrected is the fact that you have to do it at all. Anything in between like waiting in line, talking to managers, explaining the story, signing paperwork etc. is just brutal when you remember that all of it was unnecessary from the start.

So you think I should wait in line for what wouild amount ot close to an hour to get 30 buck back bc their staff made an error.

I am pissed at myself I missed it at the register.

I guess you guys have a higher tollerance for **** than I do................

Are you allowed to use "a few 25% off coupons" at the same time? I thought it was one per customer per visit. Maybe the cashier didn't screw up, maybe it rejected the 25% off coupon because you weren't allowed to use more then one?

Well, you did say you got all the way home before you noticed the problem so you did make the choice of when to go all the way back to get the refund. Now, if you'd just barely walked away from the checkout counter when you noticed it then you shouldn't have to wait it line but since you had left, gone home, then come back you are a new customer at that point. The people in front of you in line are legitimately in front of you. And you have 30 days to get a price adjustment, granted I would want my $30 as soon as possible too, but you must have known the place was busy and thus every employee there would be ******* doing something. Just my $.02

I was at HF last night, I forgot to give my 25% off coupon and rang out.

I remembered and went back in, I waited my turn in line and they took care of me.
Doesn't matter who made the error, don't inconvenience others just to get your way.

If you came here to just to vent and bash HF, I'm sure you do that other places as well. I am in agreement with those here who said you're an "entitled pain in the ***" and I feel for your "Employees" as they have to be subjected to your rhetoric.

I'm surprised someone would rant about a situation like this where they are primarily at fault and trying to dance around the rules. :dunno:

What SMKS said. Pushing the rules is just what was done. Via multiple employees all making separate purchases and all ending up in one car with one buyer in the end.

Just because everybody does it all the time and usually with permission/help of HF staff does not change it is against store policy.

OP, to me it seems you must be a better known customer at that store location and got a big break as things went.

Let me understand this-

You were trying to stack coupons and use discounts where they did not apply, violating the terms of the sale, and then demand special attention to get your discounted price while delaying service to everyone else in line.

I'm surprised the manager didn't ask you to leave the store entirely.

I recommend you don't go back to that HF store anytime soon. You've worn out your welcome with such behavior.

FYI: The HF national sales system was experiencing severe latentcy yesterday. Stores had trouble staying connected with the sudden demand in sales- and the sale hadn't even started yet. I don't know what it's like today.

I expect every trip and buying experience to be a bad one when shopping at HF. :)

When they turn out just fine I have nothing to compain about nor be upset about.

Win-win.

When it happens, I can just say it's part of the HF shopping experience and thus continue to expect it or shop elsewhere.

:)

HFT has done an admirable job in automating their sales and applying the appropriate discounts to coupons. Unless the cashier failed to scan a coupon, the “mistake” you claim happened would be rare.

This is what I do to avoid these situations:

Don’t go on a “tent” or “sidewalk” sale as there are too many customers to immediately correct a problem upon leaving the store.
Compute the price in advance, including sales tax, to ensure the total is right for the items you purchased. If not, you can then ask the cashier to validate the items without leaving the line.

Whereas you had multiple sales receipts using an array of coupons including several 25% discounts exploiting various friends, validation at the store may have been difficult. Human nature has a way of rationalizing one’s behavior to justify one’s actions but is quick to conclude that others are at fault.

Here are some possible solutions to your problem:

Don’t shop at HFT anymore.
File a dispute with your credit card company as you suggested. However, this may not be the fastest resolution.
Bring another 25% coupon when you go back to get your refund, assuming an error was made. However, this time keep your eye on the total paid.
Don’t whine to people on the Internet. They may not agree and could possibly say nasty things about you.

Hopes this helps.

Wow. I don't think I'll ever get over how people don't have any problem speaking their mind over the internet. No punches pulled.

I'd wait until the sale is over then drop by once the lines go down.

That's hardly the point. When I go into Harbor Freight or any store for that matter, I know within a few dollars of how much I'm going to spend including coupons and tax. So how did you NOT notice $30 extra??? I would have caught that mistake before I handed over any cash or swiped my card. It ***** you had to wait but it's not like you noticed immediately, you got HOME before noticing it. So it certainly wouldn't have been fair for other people if you got to jump right to the front of the line after they've been waiting for an hour or more.

Because he took multiple employees with him in order to use multiple coupons on multiple transactions.

I'm pretty sure the 25% off coupon that I saw said that it did not apply to tool storage.

BINGO!

25% off coupons don't apply to those carts. HF didn't make an error, the OP did.

Now, if you had taken the tool cart coupon in, that's a different story.

Did you think about the time and extra trips taking a few employees shopping entails? Hope you actually saved money after paying their wages.

I'm with those who think waiting in line again is justified as this was some time later that the actual transaction time. You should wait till you need to shop there again, then deal with this at that time.

Go reread the OP's first post. He was not trying to use a 25% coupon on the cart. HF charged him full price when the cart is on sale during this sidewalk sale for $169.99 with a sidewalk sale coupon.

Obviously the cashier did not scan that coupon properly and verify that he got the sale price.

He also used sidewalk sale coupon on the pancake compressor as well.

That is called "gaming the system" and shows a lack of ethics. The intent of the coupon is foster a return relationship for one each customer using one coupon, not one customer spreading out his coupons for others to redeem but only one person benefits.

Sorta like people who do rebates that are for one person and address, but then submit multiples under different family and friends.

Man, tough crowd here. Dood is just venting, take it easy. I can see both sides to this. And the technical issue that the 25% doesn't apply to tool storage...

I understand the mindset that we can all be more courteous to each other and not be a pain in the *** when a situation happens to be inconvenient to us. But i also think we shouldn't be so tolerant of lesser quality, whether that be service or products. Our tolerance for lesser quality products and services is what allows corporations to send our manufacturing to other countries with lesser manufacturing capabilities or why we so often get an Indian person or some endless conversation with an interactive voice response machine when we call for product support.

That said, i do think the store manager could have handled that better. Like someone else said, he could have taken the customer to the back office and taken care of it there. Or, if the system was down, perhaps ask for the customers contact information and a copy of the receipt and offer to take care of it over the phone at a later time. If none of that was possible, the way he delivered the message to ask the customer to come back another time could have been better, perhaps showing some empathy. I don't work retail, but in my line of business customer service counts for a lot, and if i absolutely have to disappoint someone, i try to let them understand i understand their frustration and explain that i've exhausted all my options. Most people are understanding when you message correctly and are in fact willing to work with you.

Had I bothered to do the math, I'd see that you're correct.

That said, unless i'm completely blind, I don't see anything in the post you reference about which coupon was being used. Based on his comments, I assumed he was attempting to use a 25% off coupon, however, yeah, math would then point out that it'd be an expected $50 savings instead of $30.

So, yeah, my bad. Apparently, N-54 wasn't actually called. The game is still open.
