At first glance I was thinking the same thing. When I search factory images of the 612 you can see metal angled pieces both above and below the wheels. I think the ones up above (green circles) are called the "spark arrestors". I believe I need what is circled in red called "tool rests".OP it looks like the tool rests are mounted to the grinder, just in the wrong position. They are not very substantial on the 6" grinders.

Awesome! Just curous, how did you find that part number? The tool rest support is HA6048A01SP and the tool rest is G6AP1009A01SP
Both parts are pretty easy to make and wait till you see the Baldor prices for these!

Any recommendations on websites with aggresive pricing? Looks like I found them for $17 a piece, doesn't seem too bad.For true; a friend ordered all four parts and with shipping and tax, it came to nearly $100.

Not sure where that pic came from but I found this one. This pic has the 2 piece tool rests like what the model the OP has. Also the pic has the spark shields adjusted the way they are suppose to be used.OP, again, it looks like the tool rests are installed on your grinder, just on in the wrong spot. They are stamped steel, not cast iron on the small models.. See stock photo with them in the right position.

Those aren’t tool rests. They are to stop thing from getting sucked up into the housing. Think it’s called a tongue guard.OP it looks like the tool rests are mounted to the grinder, just in the wrong position. They are not very substantial on the 6" grinders.
I always thought they were spark arrestors. How would something get sucked up into that part of the housing? Those aren’t tool rests. They are to stop thing from getting sucked up into the housing. Think it’s called a tongue guard.
Argh, forgot to refresh the page before I replied, quilty and nutjob were well ahead of me.
