Great thread, stumbled across it searching "18x20 garage" on google. Inspiration for my matching small garage!

Hey guys!

It's been too long since I've updated this thread. To answer some of the previous posts, yes, I'm still using the garage and adding to it, although slowly. The past four years have changed considerably for me, with a marriage and 2 kids.

Since my last update the biggest change has been the addition of a metal lathe. I also added a couple of small tool boxes for some of the lathe tooling and a shelf above the lathe, including lights.

One of the tool boxes is an SPG International 6-Drawer, made in Canada, which I couldn't really find a great place for except on top of the work bench and under the window.

1448.jpg

The lathe is a 1991 Busy Bee DF-1224. Bought it used off kijiji for a good price considering it included some handy tooling. It came with the wood stand which is interesting... but it works. The other tool box is a little Craftsman I bought at Sears on mega sale, just a little 3 drawer jobby, fit perfectly under the lathe.

1452.jpg

The shelf I hung above the lathe is basically a sheet of plywood mounted to the wall, with the shelf itself made from 3/4" pine sheets.

1454.jpg

1451.jpg

I mounted some T5 fluorescent lights under the new shelf and the cabinets, to provide task lighting around the lathe.

1450.jpg

I also added a trim piece around the shelf to prevent tools from falling off, and to somewhat hide the light, then stained it, and painted the backboard (plywood) white.

More to come..

Great to see you back. Congrats on all of the life accomplishments in your absence. Great to see how a neighbour has created his space. ;)

Thanks dubber and Sean! I'm really looking forward to making some new progress this summer, with the help of my two little minions of course.

Youve done a great job with your garage! I remember reading your thread years ago, and had it bookmarked. Nice to see you pop in again for an update! Proof that working garages can be beautiful!

When I first saw the size of the garage, I thought that it's pretty small and you couldn't do much apart from fit two cars in it.

You've certainly proved me wrong!!

Nice use of all the space

I've had E34's for a while now, solid good car hey!

Man, great space! Love all the function and thought that has gone into it.

We share a similar square footage and would love to squeeze all that equipment in mine while still getting both cars in every night.

Has there been any progress in the secondary shop?

Yup, got the workbench plywood backsplash up. I'll be calling the electrician tomorrow for the final inspection. In the meantime I'll start the tedious sanding process. A coworker lent me his sanding vacuum attachment, and I bought the proper vacuum filter/bag, so I'm all ready to go.

Thanks and thanks! While a little rough around the edges it certainly gets the job done. I do love spending time in there, and that's what counts.

Thank you! It is deceiving when you look at it bare. I've tried to keep the perimeter benches and accessories as tight to the walls as possible. I'm in the (slooooow) process of finishing our basement which will have a 10x15 workshop, so any additional equipment can be located down there.

Thanks! The only time we keep two cars in there is during the winter months. The rest of the year the wife's car gets the boot!

Hey guys,

I still haven't been out in the garage lately except to lightly clean the floor. A few weeks back, when the girls were all sleeping, I just stood in the middle of the garage with a beer and tried to figure out what I wanted to do with the garage this summer. I've come up with a long list of things to do, most of it is small stuff but should make a big difference.

I snapped a few pictures as it currently sits. It's embarrassingly dirty and cluttered right now, but that's what happens when it is negative a thousand for months on end.

For the past several summers I have been preoccupied with big car related projects. I haven't paid much attention to the garage and this summer it will get some much needed attention. My motivation comes from my brother setting up his garage and dubber's garage. He has a very clean and presentable space and while I don't want to go to his extreme, I do want to move towards it.

Here are the pictures from the other night:

A few before and after shots after today's quick clean. I just hosed it down, but is made a huge difference. When I have more time I'll get the mop out.

I back the Audi in tight to the wall and climb out the passenger side door. I think I've only driven the Audi about half a dozen times this winter, so it isn't much of an inconvenience.

Its crazy what a difference a little water can make. I'm sure a ton of people will want to see those pics of RaceDeck fighting a good old Canadian winter. The traction control came on a couple of times leaving the hood this morning, not cool!

Dubber, my plan is to pull up most of the tiles to see what's underneath. It has been 5 years and I bet it will be.. interesting. I'll be a bachelor for 2 weeks in June so there will be a huge spike in productivity!

It's also looking like the weather might be warming up this week, finally! Today was warm enough (in my books) to wash the cars.

About a month after we moved in I was in the same situation. It really helped me kick-start the garage, so i'm expecting big things hahaha.

I was pissed at the weather this morning. I too took advantage and gave the car a wash yesterday. I highly recommend the self-serve wash at the Suds on Merivale if you haven't been yet.

We've been through the machine wash at Suds a bunch of times for the wife's car. Freaks the kids out! If that place was in Barrhaven I'd use it a lot more during the winter months.

I'll start with a fairly minor project I completed a few weeks ago. The hose bib in all the houses around here are located at the back of the garage so that they are less likely to freeze in the winter. I wanted the hose bib closer to the front of the garage, so that I didn't have to run a 20' hose through the garage. I made sure to angle the pipe downward and put a drain valve at the end so that I could drain it in the winter.

Barry, Great stuff in here. I had bookmarked you project a while ago because I loved what you did with the hose bib. Like yours, mine is in the back of the garage and it is the only one in the front of the house, such a p.i.t.a.

Once you removed the Bib, was there a special connection you used to install the first copper pipe. Never done a project like this so maybe it is as simple as a regular threaded pipe.

Also did you ever think about using Pex for this (after the initial copper fitting at the wall)? If so why did you decide to just do the copper?

Thanks.

Now that it has been a while have you had any issues with snow melt getting under the tiles?

Great idea, but I would need guides on both sides to keep me from going off the ramp.did this in my younger years, dad had mirrors on the floor on each side to guide your way off and on.

Hey thanks a lot! Not a lot has changed in the garage except it's a bit cleaner. My big plan to refurb the garage last summer then this summer... got trumped by other things, but NEXT summer I'm seriously going to try and address some of the "list" for the garage. I should probably post up some updated pictures. Tomorrow I'll do that.

Well the update I wanted to post in December never happened. Yesterday was supposed to be 12+ degrees so I planned with the family to take a layer of winter off the garage floor. Turned out to be only ~2 degrees but I went out anyway. I only managed to mop the floor and tidy up a bit, but it was nice to finally putter around out there after a long winter.

I plan to bring the BMW back from storage as soon as possible to start working on it. I figure there's still another month before that happens, though.

These are before pictures. I haven't taken any pictures after the clean but will later today.

A few more pictures. Nothing too exciting, hopefully I can find the time this summer to give it a small overhaul.

Nice to see you took advantage of the weather too! I cleaned mine out recently as well. Saturday was also nice enough to clean the outside windows!

Found this page while looking for DIY car ramps.

This looks like a great solution for me to get my little Lada higher up so I can work on the rocker panels and underbelly to do some rust removal and oil treatment.

I am also very confident of my wood-working abilities and can easily build this.

I especially like the removable center portion. Great idea.

One question thought, did you space your 2x8 supports 16 inch on center?

Thx

This is the first time I'm seeing this thread. You've done an awesome job outfitting this space. This is a must-read for those looking for a smart, well-crafted smaller space.

And those ramps with the removable center, that's a neat idea.

Unfortunately photobucket isn't permitting 3rd party hosting anymore. I'll have to find the time to go back and restore the links using a different picture site.

Is there a way to post a link to a gallery or something? That way we can at least see the pictures.

Personally I hope photobucket goes down the tubes for that decision, it's broken so much stuff around the internet.

With the kids in school and the day off, I can finally update this thread a bit.

A couple weeks ago I made a simple mount for my quick change tool holders (for the lathe).

Mounted on the wall:

This side of the garage was starting to get a bit messy:
7955.jpg

7959.jpg

Today I managed to tidy it up a bit:
7960.jpg

I also picked up a little space heater from Kijiji. It's only 4800W but should help take the edge off before heading out to do work in the winter. The garage door also broke in half, someone had dented it with their car a while back and it finally succumbed to fatigue. It wasn't insulated so we're replacing it with a Garaga insulated (R16) door, no windows. Should help hold the heat in. It's on order and will be installed in a couple weeks.

The kids will be forced to eat KD for a few months but with winter knocking on the door we need to sort it out sooner rather than later.
The price including installation and tax is just under $2k which actually isn't as bad as I was expecting. I know I could get a non-insulated for probably half that but there is no logic in that :D

I appreciate the info. Been curious on the potential actual pricing. I'll have to drop by and check it out once its in. BTW Great job on the landscaping

Hey guys,

As mentioned a few posts back, the old garage door buckled in half so I decided now is a good time to upgrade to an insulated door from Garaga. Here are a few pictures of the old door. I'm having an issue with my picture hosting site so I've attached them instead.
