Just a random thought I’ve been dwelling on:
If you get a solid coat of primer down, can you run automotive base coat/clear coat over something made out of wood?

Yep, I did it back in the 1970’s. The shop custom van had custom laminated oak bumpers that were sprayed Candy blue then clear coated with two part clear. This vehicle spent lots of time outside as it was rolling advertisement for the shop. Furniture has been lacquered for ages as well as guitars. Last week I refinished two more panels of an antique armoire. Let the stain dry overnight then sprayed three coats of clear lacquer. You can use standard primers (lacquer thinned) or two part primers. Just stick with compatible paint products.

I think folks have used automotive base/clear coat of wood furniture. I won't see an issue. Sure, wood expands and contacts with changes in humidity, but sheetmetal in cars also does this (maybe even more?) with changes in temperatures. Inside a conditioned space, there's not much wood movement with changes in temperature and humidity.

Mohawk does make a 2k clear for wood. I've used it before and it's pretty tough. Conversion varnish is another tough wood clear finish. I've got both products used in kitchen countertops for about 5 years now and holding up nicely.
