Hi to all fellow members, long time lurker of the GJ forum for a while now, time to show off my own space now!

Disclaimer: I did the whole thread on my phone, some pictures might show up twice.
Disclaimer #2 : English isn't my mother tongue, I speak French at home. Few sentences might be unclear, feel free to ask me to clarify!

First off, my wife and I have owned this house this June of 2015. This is how the garage looked when we first moved in:

The house is located in a Montreal suburb. It was built in 1958. In our province, we name this type of house a bungalow. Most people use the garage as a storing space for bikes, winter tires and sports gear, but that was not the plan for me.

In the first two years of owning the house, not much was done to the garage aside from adding a hot water faucet, adding metal cabinets for tooling and various products for woodworking, mechanics, house improvement, etc.

I mainly user the garage to maintain our cars, tackle house improvement projects and work on various repairs, creations, or giving a second life to old/broken machines.

First modification, as stated previously, were the hot water, metal cabinets, placing the stuff in order to be able to fit a car in, install wall storage for plastic bins, as well as dismantle the wooden rack the previous owners used to store stuff:

Then, last winter, I started welding for fun on my trail XJ Cherokee a steel bumper and took a real kick in welding, so much that it was more one plans to get a real welder ( better than my 120v flux core I have at the moment) and a welding table.

Then, at the end of last summer, I bought one of my dream cars: an Audi RS4 B7 colored in Misano red.

It became obvious the garage needed more lightning and to repaint the walls at some point. I could not stand the awfull purple walls anymore with the RS4 being in the garage am the time.

I also started tearing off the old crappy styrofoam insulation to reveal the concrete walls ( garage is part of the basement).

Lighting job continued with more two H8 neon tubes units. At the moment, 5 of them are at the ceiling. A 6th one is temporarily installed near the garage door, awaiting for two more units the be wired on the electrical circuit.

Soon after, walls got painted with a concrete white primer.
I painted the windows frames grey, the door contour black.

Had to rip everything off the walls, including the old shelves. Had the idea to redo them even more solid with Caddy cantilever a arms. One objective was to have nothing on the floor aside from workbenches, which would have to be on casters.

I also changed my International 42in tool chest for a 57in Husky chest.
I fabed a little welding table as well as a workbench out of industrial racking supplies.
The welding table frame is 24 x 30, the top being 3 in wider on each side, making it a 30x36 table.
The workbench is 24x72 inches with a top made of two 3/4in plywood sheets.
I also have the floor a treat with a quick paint job, to make everything look cleaner while I await to pile the money for an epoxy floor.

And more recently, I added a 5000w 240v heating unit on the ceiling because with the actual outside temperature around here (-25C/near -13F) it became way too cold to rely only on the heat from the rest of the basement to heat the garage through the door.

Future projects include finishing the lighting job, running a solid air line from the front to the back with quick connects, running a 240v 3 pole electrical line for the future welder and going through what's under the workbench as I tend to accumulate stuff!

Thanks for reading me,
Happy New year!

How much water do you get from the driveway into the garage after it rains?

You’ve made a lot of progress in the time you’ve been there. Garages are constantly eveloving as you acquire and remove tools and equipment.

Hi windex23, welcome to the Journal. You may have noticed that there are a few of us on the Journal. What I mean by Us is that there are a few Montrealers here. Hope you enjoy and if you need a support group for an eventual tool addiction you can call on me.

Water used to get into the garage, but I did a few modifications to fix this:

Changed the sump at the bottom of the garage paved way for a trench sump, I also changed the rubber seal under the garage door and poured sealing concrete in a few spots where the slab was uneven.
Now, water almost never gets in, unless it's a huge storm outside.

I just saw your thread today, well done! I am in Edmonton so I feel the cold you deal with. Have you considered adding a 20 foot deep by 12 foot wide carport outside your basement garage?

Thanks for the comment!

The way the house's land is does not allow for this kind of structure, especially because the neighbors on each side are too close to fit in a new structure.

We still have two driveways, which is sort of rare, and the one not in front of the garage allows two cars to park.

Picture from when we bought the house:
79de246afc7acfe65ca49706d8a86d68.jpg

We are at walking distance from Montreal and the metro system, so we feel blessed to have found this house with the garage, the driveways, etc, within our budget.

Painted the welding table today, as well as fabricating a lower shelf for the welder and the chop saw:

I need some 4 in flat bar for the cross section of the shelf, and shorter 5/16 bolts for finishing though.

Your pictures are very big. You should resize them to 640x480 to optimize space in the forum.

Also, you are not putting a line-break in between your pictures, or in between pictures and text...so it really jumbles up how your thread looks in the forum.

Here is a screen shot of how the post should be formatted before it is submitted.

Doing the uploads of the images and all my posts directly from the Tapatalk app, on my phone, that might explain it, sorry!

I'll try your recommendations next time I'm on a computer, which is not too often aside from on the job.
