After looking through this quite interesting thread I thought i would add my twopenneth'
Tool requirements depend on what your working on for instance Working on motorcycles most of the time I mostly use 3/8 drive but sometimes but rarely need 3/4 drive when working on wagons. so have umpteen different ratchets, extensions, short. deep sockets etc in 3/8drive but only a few 3/4 drive. So make your choices dependent on the work you do. The main thing is though don't buy cheap tools just to make up a set they will end up costing you more in the long run.
apart however from usually required spanners(sorry wrenches)sockets etc I couldnt get the work done through the week without oxy acetylene or oxy propane for seized fasteners/mechanisms, map gas not good enough (salted roads kill everything), my compressor ,vernier caliper, dial gauge and micrometers, innumerable specialist pullers and a Huge boxes of fasteners of various grades/type.

Exactly what I'm doing, except I don't think of HF as cheap. Time will tell, though.

And thanks for reminding me about pullers.

If you find yourself using corded tools frequently, you will appreciate a cord reel. Preferably 12 gauge with a multi tap on the end.

I've been maintaining my own cars since I was a teenager back in the 60's. Seems it never fails that you need some tool you don't have and have to run out for. So, make sure you have a box with extra room and watch out for tools at sales you wish you would have had when working on past repairs.

Another reason for this list, and buying tool I won;t use until the weather gets warmer.

Already have most of what I wanted to get.

I for one think your list is fantastic. If you enjoy spending your cash this way it is only your business. I for one have some tools I have never used but who knows. Come Xmas or birthday time I just circle something that I would like or think I might need. The wife and kids just think that the circled goods are great also. Don't need another tie or article of clothing.
If I don't spend it the wife will, we spend enough on travel the way it is.
If you lived in my neighbourhood and doing that BRAKE job outdoors, I would gladly offer you one of my bays to do the job. You might have to help stock the fridge though. Even today I went to a estate sale and you should see what I walked out the door with fo $50. I have 2 son in laws and a daughter that love having a space to work in and the tools to do the job, be in mechanics, plumbing, electrical or wood projects. It is great to share some insight and experience with someone who appreciates it. If we run into something a little more in depth, I can use them experience of some of my neighbors and friends.
Enjoy your tools and if something seems insurmountable have a coffee or other libation and take another shot at it.

Understand that I agree that you can do a few things with a hammer, screwdriver, a wrench and pliers. But you are very limited. And many things are difficult.

I have always seen that tools make the job not just possible, but can add to the quality of the work and ease with which it is accomplished.

Many trades in residential construction, a field I've been in, don't require that many tools. Electrical, plumbing, masonry, rough and finish carpentry, drywall and painting don't require a large array of tools for each trade.

Vehicles are a different matter, as I am finding out. That is the one big lesson I am learning from this list. And I want to pass that lesson on to others.

Once you go beyond replacing brake pads, the array of tools needed grows rapidly. And even doing brakes and fluids and standard maintenance items becomes much more enjoyable with all the right accessories.

A rolling stool, work light, air or battery tools, creeper, etc. etc. These all make work easier.

And if you want to do more than a typical car owner, then you need the tools for those jobs.

Some have complained that my list is like a shop.....EXACTLY! If you want to do what the local shop does, you really need to be equipped the same way.

And boy, that requires a much wider list than I ever thought.

And why wait until I need the tool urgently, and have no choices on price.

I am a guy who has always tried to do my own brakes and have changed alternators and starters and done tuneups.

But lately I've wanted to, and have started to do brake lines, blower fans and resistors, front end work, wheel bearings, steering gearboxes, trans filter and fluid, headliners, and even some electrical work. Might even try replacing radiators, doing intake manifold and some welding.

Won't be tearing down and rebuilding engines or transmissions though.

So I think this list represents what I will need and want to have for this work.

Better late on Sunday evening, to have a tool I don't need, than to need a tool I don't have.

And the money I spend would actually be spent by my wife, on **** at the resale store, that we REALLY don't need. That just happened 2 days ago. The stuff really needs to be immediately tossed.

Just watched another Eric The Car Guy video and realized, that for front end work in the rust belt on old cars, I better have the torch working and handy, and have a long pry bar. Also an air hammer.

Very exhaustive list. Do you want to cover every possible car or cars that you own?
Special tools? like special sockets/wrenches/etc.
I will add one tool from my side, flexible shaft grinder, industrial one, not dremmel.

@Bill,
Have you considered buying a newer or new vehicle i.e., F-150 or Silverado instead of trying to fix >15 year old Astro. There are a lot of new safety features on domestic and foreign cars/trucks: ABS/Traction Control/Stability/Backup Camera/Laser Cruise Control/Lane Watch. Fuel mileage and rides on newer F-150/Silverado are pretty impressive too. This is just an alternative point of view.

Don't have the credit. Don't want the depreciation. Would never lease.

Don't want a payment. If the revenue stream is ever halted, you lose it.

Already spent all my money on tools! What would I do with them...or myself?

Have considered it from time to time though.

New vehicle prices are rediculous but it looks like used prices are starting to decline. I expect that trend to continue. I think on fixed income you are wise not to commit to a car payment.

This has been a very interesting exercise. It is amazing how many tools are needed for just basic maintenance and repair. I think you should be able to find a used Ford scan tool with a bit of looking that isn't useful on new vehicles but will give you full capability with yours.

Look at the Astro under hood light. It seems awesome for 69 on EBay. See Union Lineman's review in the Milwaukee thread.

It is eye opening to me as well.

But there are a couple of caveats to my list.

First, there are a number of big tools like the Bridgeport, that aren't needed at all.

Secondly, besides being heavy in some areas, like sockets and wrenches, it is still lacking in others, like specialty tools and electrical and fuel system etc.

Third, it hasn't been tested recently in use, with the latest included tools. I have been on a buying spree lately, trying to fill in gaps, and getting ready for good weather.

Another surprise to me, is that the truly basic set that is a subset within my list, isn't that expensive, for what it does. Mostly that is because I have concentrated on Harbor Freight tools, where I think they will be adequate, but also because a lot of the misc. tools, that make the work go smoothly, aren't that expensive. I haven't added it up, but I think 2-3K gets you what you need for a lifetime. The prices listed are before any coupons. Some may consider that a lot, but I don't.

I only wish I had assembled this list when young and had use of them all my life.

Others on here have much bigger sets of tools, I'm sure, and some have smaller sets too. I think a lot of guys just acquire a lot more than they realize, over time.

It would be an interesting exercise for some of us to make their own lists, describe the work they do with the tools they have, and add up their costs.

Did I miss it or you have not mentioned "beer" as one of the essential parts of every home mechanic's toolkit?

:lol_hitti

Not in my shop.

Listen, I'm stupid enough to begin with.

In fact, I just finished whittling. I took a small cherry branch and decided to whittle a marking knife. Haven't whittled in decades.

I have already gashed my thumb twice.....once deeply. I'm quitting before I commit accidental hari-kari.

And while I know a welder who does beautiful work when soused, I don't think it would help me!

Plus my 1 car garage it too small for any car, so entertaining isn't going to happen in it. It's more like a galley kitchen. Could maybe work on a bike in it.

After reading through that list I'm scared to see the overall cost. With that said, I thought I'd add oil filter sockets under your oil filter tools. These are lower profile for removing cartridge filters as there are many new cars coming with this style filter. Also, you can buy individual to your needs or buy a full set. If you're gonna be working on "customers" cars then I recommend the kit (basic is about $30) vs 1 for $8

Bill, did you hit the lottery ?

A cheap, simple hand held propane works pretty good. Less it takes longer.

Pry bar and "cheater" for your ratchet for sure.

HF hand tools (Pittsburgh Pro) are better quality than they were 10 years ago. I would say they are comparable to today's Crafts and MUCH less cost.

I doubt that you will find a "reasonably" priced air hammer useful for front suspension work ! Eric O. (South Main Auto on YouTube) upgraded to "Big Nasty" (Astro 4980) as his "go to" hammer. $$$ !! To start out with, get a HF 3-5lb Engineer's Hammer. I like them better than the Drilling Hammer because they have a bit longer handle.

ETG always says, "Hit what it goes through !" Works for me.

Photos of the service cart so far. Still needs work.
WOW ! That is impressive !

I have 98% Craftsman (newest is probably 20-30 years old) and bottom middle and top chest. No cart.

You will find that you almost never need 1/2" stuff unless you are working on suspension items.

Yeah that's true. I only really use 1/2 for wheels and suspension. Since I got my 1/4 set filled I've been using it More for any fastener up to like 14. 3/8 is the work horse though

Suspension is exactly what I'm going to do first. Front end on a 2002 Astro Van, rear drum brakes and shocks on same. Rear seals and wheel bearings on a 99 E350 Econoline.

Hit 2 Harbor Freights today.Picked up a cargo bar for the wife's Astro Van. She panic stops enough that this will help keep the 2 bins of heavy stuff in the back from sliding. They had a couple of different ones. This seemed the best bang for the buck.

96811_zzz_500.jpg

She also picked up a spare wheel and tire the other day. Makes the HF jack and jack stands more useful.

Then picked up the following plus 2 free magnetic bars.

20170325_174832_zpszitryhjx.jpg~original

Helping hands will help on the soldering bench I plan.

Needed some good brake tools.

Star impact sockets and bolt removal sockets and tweezer set round out the list.

Also stopped by a militaria store and got some paracord. Guys on here talked about it, and the wife wants to use some too.

Torx bits for damn German cars(VW owner here)
Most cars now days have special software where a regular obd2 wont read everything.

So Bill, can I come over and use YOUR tools !

Have you got a tire machine yet ? Many people recommend the Northern Tool version over the HF one.

Come on over!

Another surprising thing, is how little space all this takes up.

My 9 1/2 x 19 1/2 single car garage contains all the big machines and the roller and service cart. Of course, there isn't room for a car, but a bike could be worked on in there.

Still finding things to get. Crocus cloth for instance. It's all those little and big things that make a job go smoothly here in the rusty north country, where things can go south quickly. Something as simple as a Dremel tool to remove a burr on the inside of a hex head caliper bolt, so you can get the hex socket into it. Or long locking extensions to get to the bolts for the engine cover.

Just the right tools for the job.

wellshii,

I have a meter and extendable mirror and magnetic pickup tools. I'll add to the have it list. Inspection camera might be good. I have Torx bits. Astro van uses them on the cowl.

Bill I borrowed this from another thread. When I read the last line I thought of you!! Good luck with the accumulation. I will probably be accumulating up until the day before they take me to the home! Remember be good to your kids as the will be picking out your future abode.

Bagherra,

Yes, a 9 1/2' x 19 1/2' single car. Note that the only tools that I HAVE, are the ones in bold black at the end of the list, so it really isn't that much.

The automotive tools take up very little space. They are in a HF 5 drawer service cart and a HF 44" roller. All the rest is metalworking machinery.

I would like to set up to work on motorcycles and bicycles too. They are all that will fit. I should mention that I have an engine hoist and engine stand in a separate shed.

Are you a mason? Where are you?

Bill
