Hello, this might not be the best place for this question but i posted in another forum and got nothing.

I am installing an in-ground basketball hoop for my kids. My driveway is 16' wide and the instructions say to place it as close to the court as possible. The hoop has over a 2' overhang. It would make sense to me with my only 16' wide driveway that i would set the anchor bolts 18" back to allow for the over hang. Thus giving my kids almost the full 16' to work with. My kids are 6 and 8 so its unlikely to see very many intense basketball games.

Can anyone provide some insight?
thank you

I set mine back so that the backboard was about even with the edge of the driveway, against the recommendations of the installation instructions that wanted it closer. I also wanted the full width of my driveway to work with, but what I found after installing it was that most shots that go through the hoop end up in the grass, and thus don't bounce. It's not a huge deal, but the ball going "dead" like that isn't really ideal, even when just shooting around. Does that make sense at all?

Yeah. I guess I didn't think about balls don't always go straight through the hoop they go it at am angle and will hit behind the hoop.

I'll follow the instructions.

Thanks.

You want the backboard to go a few feet over the driveway because under basket play (shots and rebounds) are part of the game of basketball. They may as well learn to play the right way. If they start to play organized basketball, they will have an advantage. Maybe find out the ideal overhang over the concrete or follow the instructions.

My cousin's son played basketball all through Jr. High and HS and got a scholarship to play in college (well not basketball, but as a baseball pitcher), so he'll have no debt when he graduates. He prefers basketball though.

The overhang also helps you not roll an ankle off the edge of the driveway when playing under the hoop.

As mentioned, put the hoop as far out into the driveway space as you can, if you can go regulation, it will be awesome. Makes a huge difference in the game.

Let's take a trip down memory lane. Growing up my father wanted to build a concrete driveway to replace out 75' or so dirt driveway. Me and my 3 brothers were always digging something for him, or doing some other manual labor as we weren't exactly wealthy.

I was 8 or so when my dad said he wanted us to start digging out the driveway in prep for pouring concrete, 10' x 15' sections or so I think, pouring 3 yards at a time out of the little mixer. He asked us to spend 30 mins every day after school to dig that damn driveway.

We were basically like, no freaking way, that is too much, it will take years. My oldest brother countered with, we will dig the driveway and help you build it, but you have to widen the driveway by the garage and build us a (almost) half court basketball court. With lights. Smart dude my older brother.

Our dad agreed. He told us to start digging at the road and we would work our way back to the garage. Older brother says, no, we will dig and pour one section by the road, next section by the garage to start building out the basketball court. Dad agreed. Smart dude my older brother.

Took us years, but we completed that driveway and got a killer basketball court out of the deal. We spent many a late night dribbling and yelling and laughing out there with the kids from the neighborhood. Years later I thought we must have been driving the neighbors crazy, mentioned it to one of them when they were well on in their years, thanks them for putting up with us. They countered with they were happy to see us out there night after night and not getting in trouble.

Whenever I go back east I cruise the old neighborhood and stop in front of our old place. Driveway is holding up well, hoop is still there. Reminds me of the old man, he was quiet the character.

I think your question has already been answered so let me go a bit off topic to say I'm glad to hear there are still kids somewhere who actually play outside. I thought that was a thing of the past.

When we were kids we spent all day in the summer and a lot of time after school during the school year outside. We would have loved to have a place to play basketball but the local schoolyard court was usually taken over by the bigger kids, so till we became big kids ourselves we couldn't use it. So we found other pickup games to play and still managed to always have fun.

Now, 50+ years later I can drive around town during the summer and see numerous public outdoor courts with no one on them most of the time. In fact I don't see many kids outside at all unless they are part of some organized team activity.

My dad played basketball until he was 85 or so. When he died 7 years later and the house was empty we had to cut the goal down to keep strangers from playing all hours of the day (neighbors called and complained). Lots of good times with that basketball goal, it lasted 50 years or more. It rusted off at the ground one time and had to be cut loose and a new section welded on the bottom and moved over a few feet. The last time we moved it further out of the way of parking in the drive, it had caused a few dented bumpers over the years. On his 80th birthday he played basketball with grandchildren while my brother in laws an me watched as we were too full to play.
