Bathroom remodel question.

I've used a backer board called "DensShield": https://www.buildgp.com/product/densshield-tile-backer

Much easier to work with than cement board, cuts like drywall, has a waterproof layer, and a fiber reinforced core. I coated the fastener heads with a single part urethane product and polyester tape and coating at the seams. I've done two showers with it, both about 20 years old, no issues. Looks like HD or Lowes still carry it.

The remodel into a shower looks outstanding. With your skills should be a shoe in to remodel and fix the existing issues. Time to start planning!

If you don't use the tub... Rip it out.

We have the same tub shower setup and are planning the following.

Put in a walk in shower with a shower head on each side and the entry in the middle.

Late to this but a couple years back I cut out the tile shower for replacement. I was fixin’ to break it up and bucket it out. A friend offered to help and brought a circ saw with a diamond blade and we cut the tile/backer with it and took it out in sheets. Heavy, but so much better than a million shards of tile.

Recommend using Ditra on all floors regardless of whether you use Schulter in shower or not. Note it's important to use unmodified thinset to set tile into ditra. You may be able to use modified to set ditra to subfloor depending on materials.

They knew their business and the Designer was very easy to work with.

Really liking the look of the Schluter Dikra decoupling membrane for the floor tiling too!

Our master bathroom floor was done without one. I asked while they were doing it, and our contractor said that he never used a decoupling membrane and that they never had problems. Turns out we were not lucky, and over the next 18 months we had about a dozen tiles that cracked. They replaced some tiles twice before they gave up and said we needed a new floor.

The new floor was put in with the decoupling membrane. So far - about a year - no issues. I really suggest that you put in the membrane as it’s relatively cheap insurance.

The current tile floor is cracking between the tiles anyway, so that’s on the chopping block!

Went with Schluter on our recent bath remodel. For the actual shower, used KERDI-BOARD and was a bit paranoid so on top of that, rolled on 2 coats of Ardex 8+9. The rest of the bath, ripped out all the drywall and installed DenseShield.
