Battery powered remote switch

Hi guys,

I'm finally getting the basement set up in the house I bought a few months ago. There's a door at the top of the stairs and most of the staircase is enclosed (except the last few stairs). Due to the location of my desk and TV, I quickly learned that it was easy for the wife or kids to come down the stairs and me not hear them, making it a 'startling' discovery.

To alleviate this, I want to install a battery powered remote switch on the door (like a pantry light switch) that will remotely turn a small light when the door opens and off when it closes to let me know when somebody is heading down. I'd like to keep from banging my heart off the rev limiter everytime somebody says "hey" behind me.

The actual light doesn't need to be battery powered, but the switch at the door does. Any ideas???

Stop watching **** when the wife and kids are home?

They make lots of little door chimes that screw to the door and use a magnet.

A door chime like the one used on small retail shops to announce when the light beam is broken or the mat is stepped on might be the answer you are looking for.

Also consider a motion operated or proximity sensor.

Damn it beat me to it LOL:} There are kits for people with hearing difficulty to have a light blink when the phone is ringing or front door bell rings etc I am sure amazon carries something. Even a standard store door alert will work.

The DIY route would be to use a small micro switch that is tripped when the door is opened. Then use a furnace contactor to turn on a light bulb.

Contactor:

You can use a wall wart power supply or a transformer:

Any switch you can find that will work for the door.

Then an edison base socket and bulb. I'd do an orange or other color bulb rather than white.

You could use a door ringer, but bulbs are quiet, which is nicer for a basement.

Not counting wire, this is ~$30 in parts.

I want to make it wireless. The bulb/indicator can be plugged in, but I want the switch wireless......and stringless.

They're discontinued so you may have difficulty finding it. I know the Menards around here have them on clearance for $13-ish.

Thanks for all the leads/suggestions. I finally found what I think I'm looking for. I'm ordering it this week and will post how well it works once I get it installed.

Entry switch transmitter and lamp plug-in receiver

The only review was very poor and said it had less than 10ft range, hopefully you will have better results! I have had the same "startle" while working out in my basement gym and know what you mean!

I just got this installed and it works perfectly. It's EXACTLY what I was looking for. The door opens, a light comes on. The door closes, the light shuts off. Right now I just have lamp plugged into it, but I plan on doing something a little more discreet. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
