Keep in mind that both Sears and Canadian Tire sold Beach boxes with their own brands on them (Craftsman & Mastercraft). If you don't mind that the drawers are black on Craftsman and the non Beach emblem, they're otherwise the same boxes.

I know that. If you'll look at my last post, the Crown Top Craftsman in the post, I'm fairly sure it was made by Beach. But having said that, I good vintage set of boxes are 1) hard to come by around here and 2) almost always stupidly priced.

Hey everyone! Glad to see some new Beach fans here. We're still working on getting the word out about us, so it's always nice to see when people learn we're up and running.

Great photos Timbit. The B213 looks great! Here's a look at the old catalogue page for the 213: https://www.facebook.com/beachtoolb...0.1438258778./627625820706605/?type=3&theater

And good save by your grandfather on the blue boxes! Yeah they're a bit rough, but they'll still last you for another while anyways. As for the second box, we're going to guesstimate that it could be a Beach, and we'd say maybe 30 or 40 years old? Can't say for sure though. If you need any hardware to replace those ones, let us know.

Thanks Splicer, happy to talk to you! We heard so many people here on GJ who wanted a drop front that we decided to come up with one. We'll keep you posted on when we're ready to release it, and you're right, our website or facebook page is probably the easiest place to see updates. But we always make sure to post on GJ too.

As for news from us, we've been releasing some new products and are building our distribution network. We've seen tons of end users interested in buying a box, but the challenge is getting it to them if they're not close enough to someone who carries our stock.

We always love seeing photos and suggestions here, and are happy to answer any questions. We usually post more behind-the-scenes and vintage/classic stuff on facebook, so feel free to check us out there if you're interested.

Hi everyone,

We have some news we're hoping to get your reaction on first.

We've decided to open up factory-direct selling to customers that aren't in the range of a distributor. We were hesitant to do this in the past at the risk of offending our existing distributors, but have decided that we'd rather get our product out there, where there is clearly a demand, to the people who want it.

This is pretty unprecedented in the tool world, so we thought we'd come to you guys first. I know there was lots of interest from several of you individually about buying a box - so basically, now you can have at it!

If you'd like a price quote for the box+shipping, please get in touch with Landon directly - [email protected] or give us a call, 613-284-2605.

We'd love if you could spread the word! Any little bit to help Canadian manufacturing and get quality, Canadian-made toolboxes back on the market helps.

All the best,
Hanna @ Beach

picked this up 2 days ago ($120 AUD). The photos were poor, and from the dark colour, looked like it may have been a machinist's. So I said I would take it. On pick up it had been painted black, sitting on a Snap-On trolley, also painted black.

Anyway. Is there a way of differentiating the Made in Canada, from the chinoiserie? Don't wan't to spend effort on it if it is rice.

The black is amenable (slightly) to acetone, and gentle scraping, but too much area to persist with such an approach. Assuming the original was powder coated (polyester), anyone know if stripper will loosen the black crud, without affecting the original red?

Beach had a presence in Australia for a few decades, but the first one I have seen come up on the auction sites.

I am now assuming it is a mechanic's chest Model B26

I'd say that is a B-26. The original paint was a regular oil based paint, similar to the Tremclad paint we have locally. Stripper will very likely take it all off.

Beach boxes like that were made in Smith Falls, Ontario during the 60-80's or so. The distinctive handles will define them.

thanks lilredex. I will plan to strip it then. Another job on the list once the new workshop is built and the compressor installed.

Finally found myself a nice Beach stack.

Cost me a bit more than I wanted, not to mention the 50$ of gas and 45$ bridge toll but I'm very happy with them. Now I just need to find a B28 middle box (never seen one though) and a couple B67 side cabinets for it ;)

Whoa!! Beautiful find! Mind if I ask what that stack set you back?

Sent from my B15 using Tapatalk
500$, a bit more than I wanted especially considering I had to make the drive over and pay the darn bridge toll but I didn't have a toolbox and been wanting one of this style for a long time. The B29 isn't really rare, but it's not really common either. The B89 roller though, this is only the second or third I've seen come up for sale in my years of looking.

Nice stack, I've got the same boxes.

:)

Well done timbitca!! They look like they came off the showroom floor!

I love that style of handle and the multiple shallow drawers, much better for organizing.

Thanks, they are in great shape but the pictures I posted are a bit deceiving, my OnePlus One is a great phone but the camera is it's weak point. There are white spots here and there on the roller, they come off but they will need a bit of elbow grease. The old fellow who had it before the guy I bought it from was definitely into woodworking. The slides all work great but they are full of dust. As is the bottom of the roller, I had the deep drawer out yesterday and there must be 1/16" of dust on the bottom, I put it back in and left that for another day.

Very nice set. Congrats

Thanks!

Now I need to source some drawer liners for it, the combination of foam, some kind of clear rubber/plastic and a few vinyl flooring liners it came with don't exactly do it justice. I have another place or two I need to check out today but it's starting to look like I will be buying the oft recommended ones from eBay this week.

timbitca: a little elbow grease is certainly worth it by the look of your pics. Use candle wax or a wax based spray lube if you need to lubricate your slides once you've cleaned them. I used Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector:

https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-prod...nts/heavy-duty-metal-protector/?code=AMHSC-EA

BTW, which drawer liner have you decided on? I've read a pile of GJ posts on this topic in the past but lost the bookmarks I'd saved.

This is good news. I love my Beach box and would happily
replace all my other boxes with more vintage Beach boxes.
I'm sure the new products will be great.

I have two of those twelve drawer uppers, and would
suggest some changes, if they were reproduced.

> That deep drawer on the LHS could be changed to
2 or 3 drawers..... have found that one deep one just
fills up with junk.
That deep drawer is very useful for some of us.

It is perfectly dimensioned as a place to store indispensible
references like Machinery's Handbook ##th Edition by
Industrial Press.

While there is the arguement that these days reference material
is readily available with just a few clicks, who amongst you hasn't
become entrapped in the interweb when all you needed was a tap
drill dimension ...

On the flip side, perhaps there is an opportunity here for Beach to
develop an accessory for owner's tablet devices ?

The (saw)dust may seem harmless enough, but it absorbs and holds
moisture.

Constant contact with this moisture and whatever chemicals may
be present in the dust acccelerate nature's work of returning things
to their base elements.

A little time with a vacuum, cheap clean 2" paint brushes and cloths
will be rewarding in more ways than one. Follow up with jvitez' tip
for slide lubrication. Swipe some auto wax on the exterior surfaces
and finish with a buff. Repeat periodically as required.

Nice chest and cabinet.

I guess we all work very differently, I keep all my reference material in the house where it remains relatively safe and away from greasy hands and tools.

.....still would prefer more smaller drawers as above.

Reviving this thread with both good and bad news.

Good news: I ordered a roller cabinet/top chest combo from Beach in September. I've been meaning to post pics so I will.

Bad news:

http://www.discoversmithsfalls.ca/2...falls-shuts-manufacturing-plant-smiths-falls/

I've sent an email to them asking if it's only the mailbox division that closed and Beach is still available, but I have a sinking feeling it's both. The address of G.H. Metals is the same as on my Beach invoice. Hanna Lange-Chenier who started this thread hasn't been logged into GJ since Aug. 7th. I called them today and their phone is still active but only VM which said they will call back.

75 cent dollars and we still can't compete? Another casualty of Wynne's Ontario?

I'll post back if I get an answer from Beach. I wonder if they have inventory in the pipeline; if so some of their product may still be available.

So I ordered my Beach roller cabinet and top chest directly from them. They were shipped to a local trucking company's depot. Both boxes were wrapped together and strapped down to a pallet. The trucking companty used a forklift to put the pallet in my truck. How to get it out at home? I was alone that day, and don't have a forklift. After a bit of pondering I glanced at my landscape trailer, and noticed it's side wall was about the same height as my pickup's tailgate. Hmmmmm.

Some plywood, some jockeying with my tractor, a bit of dancing though mostly the use of gravity, and I'm done.

I haven't finished organizing my boxes yet (life is just too busy), but I'm really happy with them whether labelled as Gray or Beach. I like having many shallow drawers. Ideally I'd want a 56" roller cabinet with a few full length drawers, and I was considering selling my Gray box (made by GH Metals/Beach for Gray until the last few years when Gray off-shored their toolboxes) to buy a 56" stack of another brand, but then when I discovered Beach was back I decided to add another 26" stack. I bought the friction slider set as it's fine for my hobbyist use, but a nice surprise was that the deep bottom drawer has roller bearing slides.

I ordered the Raptor Grab toolbox liner recommended on GJ and it's waaay nicer than standard perforated shelf liner. I used Boeshield T-9 to lubricate all the sliders of both boxes. It took a while! Boeshield dries to a waxy film so won't attract dirt.

Well, this is no good... I just found their website this morning and this thread this afternoon. I just started looking for a new tool box and was all excited until I got to the end of this discussion.

So I emailed Landon Hicks directly one week ago, asking specifically if Beach is still in business. No response. :(

I'd love to know what happened. GH Metals were the manufacturer of the Gray Pro line for Gray Tools. Gray Tools is a Canadian hard-line manufacturer for the non-Canadians here, not Grey tools which are Asian. . Gray changed this line to Gray + which now is a different colour, has ball bearing slides, a different locking mechanism, and is now made in Asia. s :headshake This was confirmed by Gray Tools directly as I emailed them about the change to Pro + when I started looking at getting a second set.

Landon Hicks confirmed my Gray boxes were made by them. I assume when Gray Tools switched to an Asian manufacturer then GH Metals thought they could restart the Beach name and keep making the same boxes. They did add a ball bearing slide option as this wasn't available under the Gray name.

But what could have made them start up as Beach then close down in less than one year?

My thoughts are they should have done factory-direct sales right from the get-go. The traditional factory-to-wholesaler-to-retailer model may have worked in the past but this is the 21st century. I wanted to buy their product but got terrible communication from the "distributor" Beach directed me to. I called two local tool dealers who knew nothing about the new Beach, and wouldn't order me anything. Eventually I saw that specific "distributor" disappear from Beach's website when they started direct sales. I know no manufacturer wants to screw up stable business relationships. If a local dealer sold Beach they would direct you to them, but offer direct sales if you had no local dealer. This seems to be a win-win situation. Did it simply take them too long to get to this stage?

Navel-gazing aside, I'm glad I was able to get two sets of Canadian made toolboxes that will last my lifetime. But I'm very sad to see another Canadian manufacturer disappear.

Check over on the other unmentionable site......somebody there was thinking it might be related to CPC reneging on their stopping door to door deliveries.

Could be....those things are very similar to tool boxes and it is doubtful CPC would source them in China. They could have been the supplier.

Interesting theory. I'm one of the lucky few that have already been switched. I'll have to sniff around mine tomorrow and see if I can see any kind of manufacturer's mark.

Interesting indeed, and plausible. But it then suggests that they decided they couldn't make a go of it by making Beach toolboxes only. Fixed costs were too high perhaps? Yet a decades old factory and long term ownership mean their debt should have been low.

It makes no sense to start Beach if you fear closing all of GH Metals. Being blindsided by an unforeseen factor would be more likely.

Welcome to GJ Jamie! I watch Kijiji regularly, seems to be a few every week on there. Watch the ads for the local farm auctions in the spring and summer too. Any particular models you are after?

Your best bet is going used - GH metals has been shut down and (unless you feel like going solo with their stuff) won't be making the Beach brand.

http://www.globalauctionguide.com/o...nly-former-assets-of-g-h-metals-s-297514.html

carcajou, your best options for spare parts are either internet groups like this one, or a competent sheet metal shop that can bend things for you. If I need new slides for my old Vulcan box I'm going to have them fabricated rather than trying to buy replacement parts.

jaimeliberona, a used toolbox is likely in your future. There are two generations of Beach toolboxes- the original ones have the shield logo and distinctive bent-metal drawer pulls. They were also sold by Canadian Tire and Sears as Mastercraft and Craftsman toolboxes, so keep an eye out for those. The later generation were the ones made by GH metals, which usually had a script "Beach" badge rather than a shield and had cast metal drawer pulls.

I still hope someone gets back to me from GH metals. I figured if i could buy their inventory we would all have parts for years to come. I just got off the phone with Gray, thinking that they may still have some replacement parts but no luck on friction slides or badges. Roller slides and lock sets they still have.
