Bearing Packers

Most of my bearing work is on my boat trailers and small utility trailers. The boats trailers get dipped in salt water several times a year but my spindles are the kind with the Zerk on the end that channels new grease to the back and pushes old grease out the front so they get flushed when needed without removing the bearings.

Nevertheless every so often I have to disassemble or replace bearings and have always done the packing by hand. I see that Adv. Auto has Lisle and KD bearing packer tubs,

Lisle,

The KD looks more substantial, any real difference between the two?

Also, the grease I use for boat trailer bearings is Schaeffer 274 Moly EP. This stuff stays put, doesn't washout, really the best for bearings that get dipped. It's pump-able but it's the consistency of cold peanut butter, will a bearing packer function with such a thick grease?

thanks,

Rob

I had the KD bearing packer. I have never used the Lisle version. The KD works best when you step on it instead of using your hands to push down. It forces the grease through the bearing much easier.

I have a Lisle 65250 Bearing Packer, but have never really been able to get grease to "flow through" the bearing. I'm using a pistol grip grease gun. Do I need an old fashioned one with a big lever for more pressure ?

No but the 8 people who reviewed it agreed that it sucked.

You lubing sealed bearings? :lol_hitti (sorry, I couldn't resist):D
I use a pistol grip with it and never had a problem, how heavy is the grease you are using?

I've had one of these for years, works great but you waste a lot go grease between the bearing and the center shaft after you remove the bearing. I guess you could scoop it up and put it in a tub.

The beauty of the push down style is that you just put the lid back on when done, so nothing is wasted.

I have that same packer marked Craftsman and one that says Snap On or Bluepoint. It works best when you put the bearing in it and then step on the packer to pack the bearing. It works awesome that way.

I have the Lisle. It's well made. I have only used it with synthetic grease. The grease is so viscous that I gave up using it. Didn't try the foot or vise methods, though.
