Re: BEFORE & AFTER....A Tool Polisher's Haven

Yes I converted it myself. I've always had a thing for Whizzers I actually made a couple of really crude ones when I was a kid. I think you are looking at the muffler.

When I was young, I had a Whizzer. I found that the New Departure coaster brake required rebuilding quite often when used with a motorized bike. If you can find a Schwinn Phantom front wheel with a brake, it'll help and you'll be a lot safer.

BEFORE & AFTER....A Tool Polisher's Haven

Hi all,

Little bit of a story here . . . I saw these Mastercraft wrenches posted on a local board. It was a horrible picture, but I was interested because they looked just like a 9-piece set of Stanley wrenches my wife got me 30 years ago. People in Ontario might remember a promotion Shell gas station had in 1990/91, get a fill, get a wrench. My wife got fills, traded dupes, and assembled two full sets, one of which came to me. I love them, they are light in the hand, feel fantastic and are excellent quality.

So I spoke with the seller; he said he bought them in the late 90s, hung them on the wall in his workshop, where they remained. I got them home and they are almost identical to my Stanley set and Stanley did OEM for Canadian Tire/Mastercraft. The finish is not exactly the same, not quite as fine, but for CAD30.00, they are perfect!

Got them home and cleaned up with SimpleGreen, gave them an Evaporust bath, and polished with AutoSol. The came up gleaming; 9 of the wrenches were never used, I could find no marks at all to suggest they had ever been on a nut or bolt. The box end of the 3/4 had a little grease in there, so it had been used. The 3/8, both open and box end had been used, as there was a little grease there too. Other than that, unused. Cleaned the tool roll with SimpleGreen and Meguiar's Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner. It is still supple and nary a crack or pull.

There's a couple of comparison shots with a wrench from my Stanley set.

Great fun!

Matthew

I collect Porter-Cable power tools, and this B-10 sander is my latest completed restoration.

There was a lot of fabricating involved to replace portions of the frame that had simply corroded away, but the sander runs fine and looks presentable now.

Great score on the Hossfeld. Did it come with dies?
I really like the combining of tools into one station. Grate job!

Thanks guys.
Yes, I'm space challenged, so every sqft is important, as you will see in "My Little Garage" Thread.
Yes, got some tooling with it... nothing great, just a little more than the base tooling set.
But $200 was a steal... Yes, apparently I ****... LOL.

Here is another brought back from the dead tool then...
Columbia Drill press...

That belt sander is a very art deco unit
very nice

Thanks, Don, you're a man who can appreciate a good looking vintage... anything, for that matter! The whole family of Porter-Cable sanders were long on looks,

I found this little blow gun in a box of chisels that I was cleaning up. I got so excited about cleaning it up I forgot to take a before picture. It works great it dose not have any rubber parts inside it's all brass. I need to smooth out a few more lines and scratches tomorrow.fe57cc9f5a242fb3ca1f97cfb220040f.jpg5c22c39b3f99d67b07a9e5b80895637c.jpg7fcf519789e0919ce02ded273c614fd5.jpg

Ha!
I found a great similar Cummins Drill a while back...
Put it in my Airstream, cos I told everyone I planned to put a Cummins in it 5 years ago!:bounce::bounce:

But anyway, this is a 6" Horton 4 jaw I picked up for about $20... gave it some love!
Dont have the lathe to put it on, but think I can adapt it...
Is it a good chuck?

All you need to do is take that old faceplate off and put a proper backplate on it for whatever spindle nose is on the lathe.

CZ: great work on the Baldor grinder and original cast iron stand, but I love the lighted shields maybe the most. can you put a link to your thread in your sig line or maybe post it with another picture of your Baldor? WELL DONE!!

Don: that is one I might have left in original condition, but with your skills I always like to see how you almost magically make stuff look better than new.

JJ: WOW!! yours or did you see at a show? early 1900's or do you have a bit more information and pictures if it's yours?

Lot of nice work. I can see myself getting into polishing old tools. It looks relaxing and rewarding.

Well, we've had a fairly damp end-of-winter and beginning of spring here in south Tejas. That and general sloth have slowed the progress of polishing the parts for my dual grinder stand. The Covid-19 stay-home directives should have sped things up but for the two aforementioned excuses... The damp has also caused some surface rust regression on areas already completed--I hate having to re-do work.

The main obstacle is the vast amount of surface area on the damn crankshaft--coupled with my mildly debilitating perfectionism; i.e., I'll stop after 400 grit. I wonder how much 800 grit would improve it. I have all those buffing wheels and compound. Blue Magic???

Anyway, I sense Nirvana approaching, if not actually in sight, yet.

Here are a couple of teaser pics after my efforts today:

Hi Gents,

First post :bounce: I've been lurking for quite some time soaking in all GJ has to offer and I really like the Refurb/Polish threads. I picked up a RAE vise today and will be working on giving it a new life. I'm picking up a Craftmaster Tilt Table saw on the weekend. I'm excited about both projects! It's going to be a slow long road ahead...In the meantime ho about a throttle body?

Nice one Jim
I like the base you put together for it.
I know where there are several different sizes of them in one of my containers
I haven't polished on of them yet

I'm going to look deeper in the box I found it in, there may be something else in there. It pretty bad when you find a box full of stuff that you didnt even remember you had

This thread is amazing! Just curious, what is the hourly rate for polishing?

You’ve hit on the salient issue. We all like, and like to see, bright polished things—even more so if they aren’t normally meant to be bright and polished. The danger—especially with this thread—is to see a finished piece and think to yourself: Hey, I bet I could do something like that!

Then it’s a two-pronged equation of being smart enough to pick the right project and recognizing when you’re finished. Harley Jim’s beautiful little oiler that he found in the morning and finished the same day is a perfect project to spend two or three hours on. On the other side of the spectrum, I shudder to think how many times I’ve carried that 100+ pound crankshaft to the end of the driveway and hefted it up on the sawhorses—let alone the hours I’ve spent working on it once I got it there.

Some of us are just smarter than others. Here’s to you, Jim!
