So I have a collection of belt grinders, and only one of them came with a factory stand....

Time to fab up some new ones!
The first one works "ok" and is totally functional but it is rather bland looking.

Specs
960-250 BurrKing grinder
1/4 plate for the top, base and a 2.5"X2.5" .188 wall tube, 4-250lb machine mounts and a custom mount for the VFD.

So then I picked up the 760 machine and it came with a factory cast iron stand. They aren't bad looking kinda an art deco style, but they want over $400 for one plus shipping!!!

So when I picked up the 960-400 w/o a stand I decided to make another one, this time with some more visual style.

Specs
1/4 plate again for the base and top plate, and 5"X5" .180 for the tube, but I styled this one more like the factory stand.

So as I was copying the factory stand I used its dimensions for the top plate, This was a mistake! When I mounted the grinder on it is became obvious why that was a bad idea, The base plates for a 960 and a 760 are not the same size!

OOps! So I had to notch the top plate, as there was no need to adjust the grinder to an angle past vertical I only went about 1/2 of the way.

And the finished product

Very nice. There's a lot to be said for making things look right as well as function properly. Well worth the extra steps.

Nice, very nice. BurrKings are bad ***. I have a 960-272 for knifemaking and love it. I don't have variable speed though. Are you using Norton Norzon belts ?

Snazzy  Did you fill the base with concrete or is it heavy enough the way it is?
Andy

Andy it seems to be very stable the base is at least as heavy as the grinder is if not more and 22" wide a the base. I guess I could add some sand or mortar mix to the column if I needed some more weigh but so far so good!

I really like the BurrKing stuff they are great!! I use my big 14" Baldor grinder very little anymore. The 960-400 is a beast at 3hp, and with a 36 grit belt it really chews through steel.

I also REALLY like the VFD on the smaller machines ( and may even add it to the 960-400 too) I can not recomend them enough on these machines. You will LOVE the way your 272 works when you can slow down the belt. With a 100 grit belt, some Edge belt lube, the speed at about 1/4 I can polish steel so you can almost see your reflection in it. I like A&B Powerflex drives but for your application ( single phase input) they are an uncommon item in e-bay. So a cheap import drive is probably the way to go. They are about $200 new and a cheap used 145tc frame 3 phase motor and you would be all set. Believe me it would be the best $250 you could spend.

Yes I have some Norton belts, and I'm going to try out a 3m Cubitron on the 960-400 I will report back when I get it as to how well the Ceramic stuff holds up. It was rather $$ at $18.40 for one ( from burrking ), it turns out that the 4"X60" belts are not a stock belt, so ordering them is a pain most places need a 20 piece min to get them.

William , thanks for the info ! I will admit 3-M does make some good stuff , I don't think I've ever tried the Cubitrons. The ones I have used the most are the Trizacts.
Try Rutland-Airgas the used to have a big selection of different brands and sizes. There are are many knifemaker suppliers too. Pick up an issue of
BLADE MAGAZINE. or, KNIVES ILLUSTRATED. Lots of adds in both. Great hearing from another BURR-KING owner!
