I find that I use my 6x48 belt/9" disc sander for almost anything I did on the grinder. I did buy a buffer as buffing on the grinder did not work out to well for any but the smallest objects. I guess if I did not have a grinder I would probably want one. I am the original owner of a 1/3 hp Craftsman block I have only replaced the power switch and the plastic lamp shade. Look for a used one. There are lot of fans here. They are pretty bullet proof.

$200 for a 6" import is crazy. Jmho

Jet grinders are very powerful. That 6" grinder is probably 5 amps and their 8" grinder is 8 amps.

If you're every going to use a wire brush you needs lots of amps.

I've had a couple of jets, I would not describe them as very powerful.

I don't know the specific models though. I've seen several newer jets and Dayton's with toasted bearing and showing little use fwiw

Jet wouldn't be near the top of my list, but it might be OK for the average DIY guy.

My 8" Dayton was made in Taiwan, has a 3/4 hp motor and draws 10.8 amps. It has been in service for a long time and is used mostly for polishing stainless, a very demanding job.

Also have an ancient 6" Craftsman that I bought new decades ago. That one mounts a grinding wheel and wire brush; works fine.

How do you know where your dayton was manufactured? I just bought one and am curious myself.

If I had to buy new, I think I would look at the 8" JET 578008 for $300. Price:value ratio seems pretty good. It's in their "industrial" line, so it is all cast iron. 1HP, 11amp on 115V. 220V capable. It get's very good reviews on all the sites I've seen. Overkill for a DIY guy...but I hated how all the 6" grinders bog down...especially using the wire wheel.
A comparable 8" Baldor with a smaller motor is over $900.

Lots of good deals on quality used stuff though...

Steve_P - thanks for the info. My Dad has an angle grinder that I can have the next time I make a trip out that way (a few weeks). Having it will meet quite a few of my grinding needs.

larryq, 1982fxr, ez-duzit, ATC, and Davefr - thanks for the discussion and good points all around.

6PTsocket - Regarding this "6x48 belt/9" disc sander" - do you have a link/make/model #?

After all my reading, I'm looking for a Craftsman Block or alternatively this new 7", 1/2 Baldor (model 762):

Thanks again all!

Picked up a 1/2 HP commercial block grinder today on original stand for $90. Not a smokin' deal but a fair one. They're roughly 7A on 110V. I also have a delta 23-980 10" 1 HP that has something like 12A, I use that one exclusively for wire wheels, also spins at 1750 RPM so the motor has 4 poles making it very torquey. Found it for $80 locally a few years ago, its a beast.

Oh so I am just an idiot and thought even though mine said USA it wasn't [emoji106]
It says Dayton is in USA, not necessarily the tool. Dayton is a wholly owned subsidary of WW Grainger. I just bought a Dayton grinder/ buffer pedestal stand. I am happy with it but it is made in China. Check the Grainger or Zoro (another Grainger subsidiary) site. They usually list country of origin.

I just looked. On Zoro, your model seems to have been replaced with a newer number that is made in China for $257. I see the label is also different but I could not read it to see if it still says Dayton with the US address.

Thanks

I bought it from an older gentleman who was selling stuff from his deceased brother. Guessing it is an older model. Either way it seems to run well, and I will be adding a multitool attachment to it.

A little fun history. Baldor was started by two guys named Ballman and Doerr. The same Doerr that made the grinder just mentioned. Baldor has been bought by a Swedish company and will take their name, ABB.
