Sorry for taking so long to respond. Been doing trade-show duty.
Every heavy-equipment manufacturer has their bouts with freight damage. I wish we could put each of our products in kryptonite packaging, but as many of you have come to realize, even kryptonite would barely survive if handled by today’s freight carriers with their we-barely-care attitudes. Some USA regions suffering more claims than others.
As many have said, BendPak ships many times more lifts per month than most all of the world’s lift suppliers – many combined. And while 99.98% of the lifts arrive with no freight damage, occasionally a customer will receive a lift with scratches and abrasions. In most cases, included touch-up paint suffices.
We, like all other lift manufactures, do wrap, wrap, then wrap some more our lifts in heavy cardboard and shrink-wrap and it still seems barely enough protection. Why don’t we ship everything in a sturdy wooden crate you ask? We can, but it would raise our price about $175.00 per lift and that just might persuade some of you to go else ware. We do offer a wooden crate shipping option, but less than 1% of buyers opt to pay for the special packaging service.
Are we going to ignore the problem and simply blame it in economics? No we are not. One thing BendPak has never done is sit on our hands. We always do our utmost to respond to changing market conditions (whatever it is), not because we have to, but because we want to continually improve. We want to make sure our customers are proud to own a BendPak.
A good example of our always-evolving mindset is the way our HD-9 series four-post lifts are now being packaged. PHOTOS BELOW. The runways are now sandwiched together and clamshell’ed allowing the internal cavity of the runways to encase the other large components. Each runway is then individually wrapped then boarded up with plywood. The four posts are also individually wrapped then secured on top of the lower bundled runways. After introducing this new packaging method just three months ago, we have seen significant reduction in scratches and abrasions. It might be too early to tell, but so far real promising.
