these are what i wear most often when steel toes are required for me: http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/406-red-wing-shoes/406-red-wing-mens-6-inch-boot-brown

they're quite comfy even on long days. i have the standard insoles, but i think the comfort could be improved a little bit more with some inserts. also, they're closer to your price range. good luck!

I had a pair of those (not steel toe though) and liked them a lot. I got a new pair of soles on them for $50-$60, too. Now I have the 953s and like them even more.

Red Wing has a lot to offer. A quick search of their site will show a bunch of different styles, and that most styles are available in 6 or 8 inch, steel/soft toe, and insulated or unlined. Some are made in China and others are totally American made. Their sales people are knowledgable and will oil your boots for free and give you free laces, too. Can't go wrong buying Red Wing.

I've tried a lot of boots but I keep going back to Wolverines. For 99.99 I think they are best for my money..

I'm a big supporter of Thorogood boots. I'm on my 6th pair. They last ALOT longer now than they used to. I did have an issue from a set I somehow managed to get through Sears online for cheap. The rubber sole came undone from the plastic sole (tube of super glue fixed that).

I only get them from theunionbootpro.com now. I swear by them, no break-in period, most comfortable boots I've tried. I wear them all day right from the box. I'm in these things for about 15hrs a day.

I used to burn through a pair of boots a year. Literally. I'm a welder, and the sparks would get into the laces and stitching and burn the boots apart, one seam at a time. After I figured this out, I bought slip on boots. Best move i ever made. I bought Chippewas for about $150. Made in USA. I'm on my feet for 12-15 hours a day, my feet never hurt. I loved my lace up Chippewas, but they were twice the money and burned out just as fast as the cheap boots. I've had red wing, danner, snap-on, and I'm sticking with Chippewa.

I concur. I have orthotics and they have been the best thing for my feet. I switch them between every pair of shoes I have. I wear Thorogood boots union made in the USA. Worth every penny I needed a new pair of laces after about a year. So i emailed them my size and the model number and they mailed me out two new sets. I wont pay $175 for a pair of Chinese boots. When these are top quality for the same price.

Another Thorogood wearer here. I love mine.

But let it be known(this has seemed to pissed a lot of construction workers off), not all red wings are made in the USA anymore. Just a handful so know what you're buying before you do.

Its more than just a "handful" considering most of their best selling boots are still US made. Best selling among the trades, not necessarily among suburban hipsters. Those 2245 boots which it seems about 95% of all construction workers around here wear, are made in USA.

I'm not saying I agree with their outsourcing to China, but one thing it has done for them is a hugely expanded catalog of shoes. They used to only have, what, a half-dozen or so designs? Now they have many dozens.

USN surplus chukka boots are unbeatable if you can find them new.

Also, Mexican work boots are best buys. They're usually uninsulated, meaning you can wear them in hot weather and when it's cold just double up on wool socks. Mostly available at Spanish-speaking stores.

Red Wing. Go to the store and get them, don't order shoes online unless you're buying EXACTLY the same pair as you've already got. With that much time on your feet, you've got to be sure the fit is dead on. Of course, if you're okay with the order a bunch and send back the one's that don't fit gig, go ahead, do the online thing.

And don't be a cheap-*** bastich who tries everything on in some store to find what fits, and then goes and orders the exact same thing online from some other vendor in order to save money.

I've heard lots of good things about Timberlands, never owned a pair. s

Timberland makes great shoes and boots. You cannot get a better pair of hiking shoes than Timberland Gortex---fit great, no seams that cause blisters, last for years.

First off I wear logger boots with the taller heel due to having flat feet and they make my back, knees and feet feel better. I have also convinced several co-workers and my wife that the taller heel helps with back pain.

Whites are the best that I have ever wore, but expensive. But with the whites you can send in and get forms and they will make the boots to your foot. I haven't wore any but Nicks and Hawthorns are made the same way. I was told the guys who started Nicks and Hawthorns worked at Whites first (don't know if that's true or not). Danners are good boots also but don't last as long in my opinion. I have wore Georgia and Deadwing (redwing) boots, they didn't last and would hurt my feet after 6 hours into work. My current boots are Carolinas and I like them a lot, I'm about a year into them and they are holding up to the abuse and are comfortable. I just got done with a 10 hour day at work and my feet started hurting when I but on the "clean" shoes.

IMHO asking what the best boot is akin to asking Chevy vs Ford. Personal preference, different feet, etc.. all factor in.

I'm personally a lover of Wolverines. Current boot is the Un-insulated Buckeye, love em. Before that I was in a pair of Tremor's. I've spent 12 & 18 hour shifts in both...the Tremor was used in a Paper Mill setting, 100% concrete floor, no complaints no pain.

My Brother and Dad on the other hand are Red Wing people...both love the fit & feel of the Red Wings. Dad spent 37 years in that mill and was mostly always in Red Wings...

What I'm getting at is what fits me may not fit you...gonna have to try and shop around. Either way, any boot worth buying will be expensive.

I have been working for a asphalt co. For 20 years. The ones that were most comfortable, longest wearing and a great value have been Carolina Boots by far. Believe me I've tried them all.

I don't think the Red Wind site lets you order online. They make you go into the store to ensure proper fit.

Or perhaps its just certain boots. I know the ones I wanted weren't available for purchase online (I've worn the same design and size for years so I'm pretty certain I know what I want).

Exactly, but not only for the reasons you mention. Ford makes an F-350, but also a Fusion. Just because your specific model of Redwing boots was uncomfortable or fell apart on you doesn't mean all Redwing models will do the same thing. If you do not like a specific boot you bought, please be sure to state which model it is instead of just saying the entire brand *****.

Good day.

I don't know if they do or not, I was referring more to the Zappos model and such. Shoes, helmets, a good suit, some things IMO just don't lend themselves well to the online shopping model.

I wear Bellevilles flight deck boots. Theyre roughly 150-200 made in USA. I like them and they have a goretex liner so they are waterproof. Some people prefer composite toe only and may have a point, but they are a decent boot for the price.

Screw Redwings and all the other boot makers who sold out to China so that Johnny Cheng can make your boots in a commie sweat shop where he is beaten daily and feed a few grains of rice.

If you want real boots, you have to get them from down-under.:rocker:

Redback boots: http://www.redbackboots.com/

Best daym boots I have ever put on my feet...:rocker:
Never heard of Whites? Wesco? Both produce top quality, U.S.A. made boots. Whites sets the standard, IMO. Great boots.

Redback Easy Escapes are the best boots!!!!! I just got my Easy Escapes, and damn are they comfortable! I bought a pair of these and a pair of Blundstone 510's to alternate through out the week. The difference is like night and day!! I just started as an Audi Tech, so im on my feet for about 9-10 hours. What I did was purchase these boots and try them on after work. My Feet where swollen and tired. The Easy Escapes from Redback Felt the BEST. My feet felt comfortable and relaxed. I ordered the the Redback Leather inner sole inserts and did the same 4 days later. I tried them on after a long shift, and wow could you feel a difference! I recommend the the Redback Easy Escapes. I hope they keep making them in Australia and not overseas like the Blundstone Boots. I will definitely buy another pair of these!

I have bad feet and have worn American made Red Wings for 30 years. They last long and don't hurt my feet like most other boots. Yes, some have been outsourced, but most are made just up the river from me and they will resole any of their products.

I work in the safety shoe business, have now for over 10 years, and have dealt with many different brand s and have worn many of those brands. Here's what I have seen.
Red Wings make a damn good boot, most are durable, high quality, and yes, quite a bit now are Chinese made, or USA assembled of foreign components. In other words, the parts are made overseas, but they are glued and stitched in the US. I've heard for years that Red Wings can take and time to break in. One customer once told me, give them a year, you've got a great boot.
Timberlands are a great boot, the TiTan Pros are great, almost like wearing sneakers. Most are lightweight, comfortable, take very little break in time.
Wolverine and Caterpillar are made by the same company. Wolverine World Wide makes 9 different brands. Many times you can find a similar model in the other brand. There is a brand called Hytest, which is available thru a Hytest distributor. That is Wolverine's higher end line. They have a line called Footrests which are super comfortable, and durable. Google and you can find the dealer for your area.
Thorogoods are very nice, and many, but not all, are Union made in WI. They do take some break in time. I am currently wearing a pair of Thorogood wedge soles, 814-6201. They took some break in, but now they are comfortable.
The most important thing to remember if are wearing steel to is to give yourself room. ½" of room in the front of what you want. You toes should never got the front of the steel cap when you are walking around. Do that and you will wear a hole on the liner, your socks, and cause problems with your feet and nails. If the cap is right from the sides, try a little bigger, and if that doesn't work, try a style with a wider toe cap. Oh, and going with a wide does not made the toe cap wider. Wide makes the boot wider at the ball of the foot.
I hope this helps.

The perfect addition to every work boot.

I do auto body so I am on my knees most of the day. I doubled the life of my boots just by adding those toe guards.

I went to podiatrist and got hard sole orthotics. Expensive but solved the foot pain problem and still wearing same ones for seven years now. That’s about thirty five bucks a year to be pain free. I can use them in work boots, tennis shoes or dress shoes.

I work in retail and am on hard concrete floors all day. I wear Justins. They are the Lacr style workboot with a roper toe. Mine are not steel toed but they do make them. Before these I had a pair of Georgias that were super light and comfortable.

$150 , I would try to find Georgia boot, Ariat or Wolverines...You might get a year out of them.
I have to try my boots and walk around the store for a bit.. I also bring my own socks. I just bought a pair of Winter insulated Ariat lace ups for riding my bike in the cold months...they wear good. For warmer weather I wear Danner.

I haven't seen a single recommendation, but I bought Carhardt composite toe boots for wear in a shipyard and on a contruction site this past year. They were still comfortable after a 15 hour day for weeks on end.
