I've seen couple older threads, technology changes quickly. About half were guys wanting to see in a wall, i want it for engines or under dash. I don't require 11' of lead. I'd like to go in sparkplug and maybe injector holes.

Leaning towards this one for now, 5.5mm end, smallest I've found.

I also found a Provision 636 endoscope, its not a camera, its a fiberoptic one you put your eye up to, has light, you can get a 45⁰ mirror for the tip, you can also get a magnet. Comes with a case, only 36" long.

With my experience with these things I'd settle for ones that just work. They all seem to be cheap junk.

I have that one or very similar by same manufacture. It works and has been helpful. It's not as great as I hoped. Haven't used it in several months but iirc, I have had to sometimes restart phone to connect via WiFi.

If I could have justified spending more - I think it was near $35 when I bought - I'd go to Klein ET20. Their gear has usually been very good.

Tomorrow I'm supposed to pick up the Provision 636 locally for $20. I figure if I don't like it I can sell it for what I have in it.

This morning a buddy showed me his Cal-van 84 that xjfish posted. He got his from a local diesel shop. XJ said his came from Snap-On and I've heard someone else say they got one from Cornwell. My buddy said the accessories **** (45⁰ mirror, magnet, hook).

With all the talk lately about dryer vents, I am in the market for a borescope and leaning toward this.
I want to see how bad the vent is before cleaning it.
I ran it by my wife and she said if it's for safety get it;)

Revitalizing this thread :)

What did you end up getting ? I am looking for something too. Dont want to spend way too much but also realize that you get what you pay for.

Me personally, I like having the tool all-in-one, not requiring a phone. In the past I've had some things (like an infrared camera) that worked on the phone that I had when I purchased it, but would not work on a newer phone.

I guess there are benefits to both ways. I think for a once every few months type of use the one that works with the phone is better. Less to go wrong :)

I couldn't agree more. I hate anything that requires a phone or laptop. This one is really cool but spendy. The articulating head that does a complete 180 is to die for:

The main issue I have with the stand alone ones is batteries. I have several stand alone tools (stud finder, hvac manometer, db meter etc) and when you only use them a few times a year it seems like the battery is always dead when you need it the most :( With the phone/tablet ones they are powered by your device so that is not an issue.

As a matter of fact, I do! Just took these today, these are trying to get a better look at the #6 spark plug (for removal) on a Nissan VG engine.
I think you can adjust the light and whatnot but I haven't played with any of the settings yet. It also comes with magnet, hook, and mirror attachments, I haven't tested those yet, either.

I bought the one listed in the Amazon deals thread a month or so ago. It was ~$24 if I remember, and seems to work well.

I don’t need the long cable, though. Shorter would be fine.

I prefer self contained rather tha one coupled to my phone. Gettin a $24 tool dirty and oily, or potentially damaging it is one thing. Potentially screwing up my phone working on a car seems unnecessarily risky behavior

I bought one from ebay:

Here's when it arrived:

I just got one with an integrated screen. I didn't feel like having to use my phone as a screen. It works OK for the price.

Seems like a lot of the newer ones either have dual lenses (one on the side of the probe) or are articulating. Any feedback on those ?
You will be eternally mad at yourself if you do not get one with a dual lens.

I'm interested in this too. Trying to take a look at some rod bolts thru the oil drain plug hole. I think the articulating one is a plus unless someone has something else to add.

I have a Teslong with dual cameras, straight at 90 degree. Very nice, although in grimy areas the 90 degree lens is more easily gunked up. Since it's..... at 90 degrees and all. My favorite use is checking for intake valve carbon on VAG products. Pull a plug, rotate camera to face intake valves, rotate engine until they're open and feast on the horrors. Also nice for checking for blatant cylinder wall damage.
