Two and a half months ago I poured a new concrete floor in my new steel barn. Currently nothing has ever been on it because I planned to paint it. My original plan was to just go to a big box store and get something reasonable. Quickly is decided maybe I should talk to someone more knowledgable and went to Sherwin-Williams. The '20yr old' sales guy recommeded ShieldCoat. It is on sale for $59 per kit, and at 1100sqft. I will need three for a total of $180.
This barn will be used basically for storage. It will contain a bit of racking and have some of my cars and other toys parked in it. The cars will probably be used less than once a month. Some of them will be stationary for a year at a time. Occasionally I will get the wenches out and change the oil, or jack up the vehicals to change the brakes. As I said this barn was erected mainly for starage.
Floor painting is attractive to me because of the ease of cleanup, the lack of concrete dust, and the resitstance from stains. I am looking to paint the floor and then have minimal maintance. For that reason I as scared of products that may be likely to peel a couple of years down the road. From what I gather, if the coating peels, the surface must be stripped and then reapplied. I personally would rather that the surface would wear thin rather than peel. I figure wearing thin will just require another coat?
I began looking a epoxy coatings online. I found a company named Durall who makes Dura Seal 400. Their kit for my floor is two coats and costs about $500. It dries at about 9mils.
I poured the concrete myself at a cost of only around $1100, so I would rather not spend too much on the floor coating. Yet I am still leary of peeling.
???? MY QUESTION IS ????: The latex based ShieldCoat finishes at about 3mils and costs about $180. Its it worth the extra money to put a single coat of Dura Seal 400 on (4.5mils)? It will cost about $290 or an extra $110. I have been told the first coat will not be that even, but how bad is it? I am not that picky, however I don't want it to look horrible.
I think I can swing the $300 tab, but would rather not spend the $500. Another attraction is that Durall says it can add anther coat an any time.
PLEASE let me know how you feel I cant get the best value out of my floor while staying within my $300 cap.
