Happy with my Dewalts. New lithium ones are light and powerful, but when they go dead, they go dead.

I have the 12 volt lithium ion Mikita drill and impact combo works great for trim panels and engine compartment covers and small fasteners but I'd like a hefty 3/8 drive impact but won't want to pay for the snap on lol

asking what is "best" is subjective. and you'll get lots of answers from different folks with different biases. however, i love my makita. it comes with 3000mah / 3.0 ah lithium batteries that just won't die. the link is below. i bought mine refurbished a few years ago off ebay on the cheap. it's held up great. they have brushless motors now. i haven't tried one, but if the difference is as big as i think it is, then it would be even more incredible.

all that said, you can also go to consumer reports and they have lots of reviews.

this is the kit i bought

this is the kit i'd buy if i was buying again

I really like my Snap On's.The Milwaukee brushless are nice too. It comes down to personal preference. The 1/2 Snap On is heavy.

i'm loving my Snap on 7850, i wouldn't be without it now. I had looked into the Milwaukee M18, it was advertised as the most powerful 18v impact gun in the world at 610nm, I even emailed them to query this as Snap on's 7850 is 949nm!!!!

I never got a reply

I like Milwaukee. They have good power and the Fuel versions have a selector for different speeds/power output. Plus there is a variety of different tools that use the same batteries.

How much impact power are you comparing. In 18v Li Ion, IR, snap on and bosch has 500ft/lb and up. Then you have the over 200ft/lb to 450lb range that are pretty much the same size as the IR and Bosch. Then there are the sub 200ft/lb models that are great for allot of lighter duty work. Bosch, milwaukee, mikita, panasonic and hitachi makes good ones.

Then there are the super compact 12v Li-Ion, again bosch, milwaukee, hitachi and mikita are good.

I have the following

Snap on 1/4
Milwaukee 3/8 M18
IR 1/2 W7150

I like the current line up, I may get a 5130 as having a second 3/8 would be nice some times.

I had the snap on and it was great then got the IR 7150 and its a beast. I believe the best cordless 1/2" out there. I paid $365 shipped to my house with one battery and thats on par with the milwaukee.

For general tight space use, it doesn't get any better than this:
Bosch PS41 impact
Obviously not lug but material, but this tool saves me several hours a week working at the shop. Great battery life and customer support too.

It depends on what you will be using with the impacts as I use a ir w7150 for suspension and motor mounts and a Makita lxdt01 for engine work water pumps tensioners etc and a 12vmax Makita for plastic covers and interior work because size and power is always a factor it really depends on what you will need out of the impact to work the best for u as the ir is the strongest but big where the 18v Makita is a lot bigger than my 12v so it will be hard to say

I'm running the Snap-on 3/8" 14v impact gun with the 18V battery for the majority of my work. It even pulls off lug nuts with ease.

I have a dewalt 12 volt 3/8 and a snap on 14.4 3/8.

I generally grab the dewalt first because it is lighter and gets the job done. The snap on has a little more power but is heavy. I've threatened to ditch the snappy but it's hard to because I spent so much$$$ on it. If I were to buy one today it would have a lithium battery for sure and I'd probably lean towards thew new milwuakees.

Also it's going to depend on what kind of work you do. I work on small engine and primarly work in 3/8 or 1/4 drive.

Put the 18V battery on the Snappy and forget about it:thumbup:

Cordless are great, but no matter what you buy its not going to be the last one. Buy the biggest best and when the new bigger best is out you may want that, or like most you decide cordless is great and want a smaller one for the light jobs, and vice versa.

Right now between $200 and $300 several brands have some nice impacts. I'm kinda cheap so I bought a C3 Nicad on sale for $91 incl tax, battery, and charger. Anything it won't handle I can use air and my Earthquake.

I have beaten the hell out of my 18V li-ion hitachi 1/2 impact for 2 years and It still keeps on going. I have been very impressed with their li-ion tool line for the price. Irregardless, air tools always win.
