Eventually all quick connects leak. Air or water both have wear points.

True, but when it comes to the brass quick connects they sell at HF, the seal is the washer. It's not a standard hose washer, but I can get replacement washers at my local Ace hardware (from Nelson) for a couple of bucks a pack, and they can be changed in seconds. Yeah, they only last a couple of years before splitting. So what? Nothing lasts forever, and hose washers don't last that long either.

I used to use the self-sealing QDs, but my wife struggled to make the connection against the water pressure. So now, I put a 1/4 turn shutoff at each hose end, with an open brass QD after that.

Very difficult to find, but look for something with a separate flow control valve even if it is only a 1/4 turn ball valve. Very handy to be able to adjust flow without changing the pattern.
That is true of almost any multi position nozzle with a separate trigger. It is just solid brass screw type pictured above that are all in one. They are durable but not flexible as to playing with volume and spray pattern. The fireman style Dramm and the Lowes orbit do not need to be held to control the volume or use some clip or screw to maintain a certain flow rate Just move the lever with your thumb. I threw out a lot of broken nozzles before finding these two.

The fire hose version is really not my favorite part of the nozzel if you are washing a car its perfect or watering delicate plants its great. The jet nozzel and the instant on off swivel and the shear weight of the unit is what I love. The in and out higher preasure adjustment on the main nozzle is really handy

You can get this one free at harbor freight with a coupon sometimes. It works great and seems to be fairly rugged. I have about 6 of them all for free so I probably have a life times worth.

I have found various types to work but generally like the triggers, just for convenience in washing cars etc. where I want to turn them on and off quickly. The fire hose types are a good idea but either they are not easy to turn on and off or they seem to need more water volume than a regular garden hose has.
I think we have a different fireman's nozzle in mind. I don't mean the ones with the big yoke like a real fire hose. I mean the ones that work on the same principal but have a little yoke you can opperate with your thumb. It is practically as fast as a squeeze trigger and will hold a setting when you want it to. Dramm and Orbit both make decent ones.

This is the one from Lowes that I like. Easy thumb operation. Going strong for a few seasons. Something like $11.98. Made by Orbit. Similar Orbit models sold elsewhere. Same pricipal as fireman's hose but much smaller lever. Fkow and pattern are separate which is good for gardening. ORBIT MAX MAXf280eb9a632e9ff68a67a70e0964db03.jpg

Maybe I should start a new thread on this but what about hoses? All I ever seem to find are these "super tough non kink" hoses, which are some vynil coated junk that kink more than any other hose, and then crack where they kink

Either that or they are a huge heavy rubber hose that is too heavy. Any happy medium?

I read some people talking up some black rubber Craftsman hose. Sorry, forget the exact details. I snagged one on clearance at the local Sears Hardware which is now gone. I think it is an import. Seems pretty well made. Time will tell.

Yep...I'm a fan of the Craftsman black rubber hoses. Thick, heavy, rarely kink, and have a lifetime warranty. I say rarely kink because I have had them kink before with no water pressure (spigot turned off). With water pressure in the hose, I have not had a kink yet.
I have a 100' hose I picked up for under $30 and a 50' I got for $25 during their 'clearance' sales.

They are not the best hose I've used. For that, I don't know what brand it was, but it was a heavy black hose with 2 yellow lines running down it, with a spring on the house side of it to keep it from kinking at the spigot when pulled on. I drug that hose all over the yard, gravel driveway, around trees, drove over it, etc...for 15+ years before it sprung a leak.
It was longer than the 100' Cman hose too, which I miss because the 100' Cman hose won't reach my truck in front of the garage.

They have changed the design and are now manufactured in China. Are you using older hoses, or the latest version which is no longer octagon shaped?

That looks really nice!! What I'm debating in my head is how big of a pain it might be to change nozzles constantly while working in the driveway. That's the downside that would make me hesitant to purchase. Thoughts? Does look super high quality!

You wouldn't change nozzles working in the driveway. You would have the smaller one attached and it is 3 position (Hard stream and two levels of fan). It works for everything you would need it to on a driveway hose. The bigger nozzle is more of a shower setting for plants, etc.....

A pleasure to use and zero leaks.

Older...as in 3-4 years ago. Octagon shape and made in the USA.

I did not know they switched to China....haven't looked for hoses since I got mine

The one I got is Chinese. Prefer US but seems OK. Always a concern is toxic stuff that seems to show up in Chinese products with some regularity. I use it in my vegetable garden. If I grow 2 heads will report back.

Dont see a use in starting a new thread.

For those of you that have bought the Dramm, how tight are the threads?

Ive got the craftsman brass spray nozzle and while its nice, the tolerance in the threads is far too large. Sometimes all of the water will spray out one side instead of being a nice fan spray. Highly annoying. If I had a lathe and the know how, I would make a nice spray nozzle with tight threads so it would have a nice spray pattern.

I don't have the dramm brass nozzle, but i have lots of Dramm quick connects and shut off valves (all US made). They are all really nice, and the threads seem to fit well (of course, the seal is with a hose washer). But i don't have leaks.

Their stuff is fantastic. Hoses, connectors, spray, etc. All expensive, but all awesome.

The Gilmour is what I use. I like the instant on/off and stream adjustability of the pistol grip nozzles

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00002N68C/?tag=atomicindus08-20
All the concrete trucks in NYC use those - nice and tough

I used a melnor one that was pistol grip with an adjustable screw nozzle, but the spring got weak and doesn't shut off anymore, unless I bang it against something

Do you guys use anti seize on the hose bib end of the hose?
