1000bulbs has been around since 1994.

I realize that. But they dont make the fixture. They're just an internet seller. In 4.9 years, when that thing dies, and you call 1000 bulbs, they'll forward you to the manufacturer for warranty. And he wont be in business.

I think CD may have been talking about the eBay ones and got mixed up. I could be wrong, but he had replied prior quoting the eBay link I had asked about and said to run away from those. I'm going to give a closer look to both the Fluorescents and the 1000bulbs led fixtures. I just want to make sure I have ample lighting and will not be going up and down ladders constantly replacing bulbs or fixtures. The 6 tube high output lifts we have at work are constantly burning bulbs and they never get replaced. And I work for a company that is "world class."

If you do go fluorescent, remember that T8 bulbs range from "really good" to "really bad". There are bulbs with 70 CRI, 20,000 hour lifespans that barely manage 70 lumens/watt, and there are bulbs with 85 CRI, 60,000 hour life spans that push nearly 100 lumens/watt.

...and when replacing fluorescent bulbs in hard to reach places, when one bulb fails, you should seriously consider replacing the rest while you're up there, since the others are likely to be close behind. Unless a bulb failed very prematurely.

I'm about 100fc in my shop, 40x64, T5HO 4 bulb with reflectors at 14' height. 18 fixtures, 5000K bulbs, no hot spots, excellent CRI. I used the light calculator everybody here uses.

This ^^^^^^

T5HO 4 bulb (5000k) fixtures all the way :rocker:

LED fixtures/bulbs is not for every application. I had this discussion with a lighting representative.

I never said for your application. I was making a general statement. Most will jump on here, say go LED and have no clue why.

Look at all the big stores.....how many have gone LED? Most are still using T8. Ever see the glare a LED replacement tube gives off?

My toy shop.....
12' ceiling, 8' strips with 4 - 4' 850 bulbs. Each fixture with the tubes cost me $25....I have 25 fixtures.....do the math if I went LED.

My friend's shop that I spec'd out for him. He bought the lights. Notice there is nothing to reflect the light. And doesn't have the fixtures install and he said it's too bright for him...he told me that he wanted it bright.....so I spec'd it out bright

Getting back to my statement. I'm wiring a house. The home owner wants lights in his garage (9' ceilings) to wax his car. He'll need (9) 8' fixtures. If I go T8, it'll cost me $225 for the fixtures. If I go with LEDs, it'll cost me roughly $1000 for the fixtures......labor is the same. All the home owner wants is light in the garage. Need I say more.

I had Lithonia cold start T8 fluorescent bulbs that I put up in 2000 all at one time, purchased at Home Depot. Starting in 2014 the ballast were failing one after the other. It's cheaper in Oregon to buy a new fixture than replace the ballast. Out of frustration I wanted something that was going to last longer this time around. I converted to LED about 6 months ago, there way better than the fluorescent bulbs. "much brighter" I have 48 four foot bulbs in a 60 x 30 shop.
Time will tell
Hope this helps

I'm now more interested in seeing that drag car under the cover than I am the lights haha. Both fluorescent and LED have major pros as well as cons so this is going to be a hard decision to make without going out and snooping around locally to find comparable setups configured both ways.
Your friends place didn't really look as well lit as your shop(in pictures anyways) granted there's a 4 foot height difference. Your shop looks very well lit and looks like clean, bright, balanced/even light.

Sorry for the delay, things have been hectic. Since I'm still in the planning stages, I have no before and after. I'm currently working on clearing the land as well as waiting to hear from the bank about the money to fund this project. I still haven't decided 100% about which route I will go for lighting but have been looking closely at all of the recommendations given to me here. This is my current status:

This land is in a flood zone so the county is requiring me to build up the land 4 feet before they will sign off of any permits due to the creek to the left of the picture, he was also scratching his head as to how I got FEMA to remove my home from the 100 year flood plane. So either way my lowest level of the structure has to be elevated by 4 feet, but I will be moving dirt from a hill across the creek to where I need it.
So basically getting rocks thrown at me from all directions currently haha

If you don't mind me asking, what is the depth of your friend's garage and what is the length of his coach?

Thanks.

Mike.

Don't know the length of the coach but his shop is 50' deep by 72' wide.

I could find out the length of the coach if you need me too.

Thanks for the information. I am also building a 50' deep x 60' wide shop/RV garage and I figured that his Mountain Aire coach in the picture was probably in the 40-43' range. Our is a 40 footer so that gives me a good visual comparison.

Thanks again for the picture and the information.

There's already been a ton of good advice but I'll share my thoughts.

Contrary to what some may believe LED's will not last forever. In fact some of the really cheap ones will probably have a shorter lifespan than a decent fluorescent.

In the case of highbays LED's have very minimal savings over T8. The fixture efficiency of most fluorescent highbays is better than 90%. Using decent lamps you can achieve nearly 100 lm/w

It was also mentioned that you should relamp the whole fixture even when only a couple lamps burn out. Doing this will save you a ton of work. Once a couple of the lamps burn out the other's aren't far behind. Otherwise you will feel like your always changing lamps.

While it's nice to look at pictures they really can't show the light level accurately. Camera exposure and what not has a huge effect on how bright the picture looks.
