I carry either my Hele 5 inch blade, or one of my Mora knives. Does anyone know of any better quality knives out there. These Mora and heles have been the best I have found yet.

I'll ask so that no one else needs to: How much do you want to spend?

I didn't have a price in mind. I guess up to 200, but I don't like spyderco , and I go for quality, not looks. The Hele has both quality and looks. That's why I bought it.

Bark River. $150-$350, excellent quality, excellent steels, huge choice of handle materials, no "custom shop" waiting time.

For a little less money, Knives of Alaska is quality stuff, but more utilitarian. $80-$150

Utilitarian is what I like. Quality steel (carbon steel if I can) and for a reasonable price. I'll have to have a look at the brands you mentioned.

Those knives of Alaska look like great working knives. Some people collect, but I use. If it doesn't function efficiently, I don't want it.

A 5" blade? Where the heck do you carry that thing without getting arrested?

Here in California you can walk around down town with a samurai sword strapped to your hip, as long as it's not concealed.

There are legions of quality knives for under $200. I'll second the Bark River recommendation ("Barkies"). Ontario Knives also makes some good ones, as does Buck. For some inexpensive, yet surprisingly good, albeit ugly, knives, look at Condor.

This guy knows what he's talking about.
Condor knives are ugly and the finish is so-so, I wouldn't personally want one as my EDC... but they are GREAT knives for the price. I have a Micarta handled machete from them that I've put through HELL every spring killing thistles, small trees, and other weeds (and gravel/rocks), and it comes back and keeps begging for more. Damn thing is unkillable! :)
Ontario is surprisingly good for how "low end" it is. I have a few of their blades and like them all.
My "Barkies" (Bark River) are my favorires though... one of their fixed blades (Aurora, Liten Bror, or Mini Fox River) is almost always at my side.

Consider this.

If I had a $200 budget, and was told to go out into the marketplace and select ONE fixed blade knife for EDC for the rest of my life, with any possible conditions to be faced, this is what I would choose:

Benchmade 162 Bushcrafter knife. Plain edge fixed blade. Pure utilitarian awesomeness!

This is coming from a guy who owns over 200 blades, and carries and uses a fixed blade or folder daily.

P.S. If i had $50 more to spend, I'd buy a Bark River Aurora in 3V steel and never look back.
These can be found in certain handle materials for around $250.

Kabar makes some pretty nice fixed blades. Full tang, leather or rubber handles, 1095 steel (which is pretty good). Plus they look really awesome if you ask me. There is the big one at about 8" blade. I think they make one that is a bit smaller. Oh and they are us made...

I assume the knife is for self defense, if a working knife, get a multi tool. Leatherman. Self defense, buy a pistol. Just sayin.

I carry either my Hele 5 inch blade, or one of my Mora knives. Does anyone know of any better quality knives out there. These Mora and heles have been the best I have found yet.

Both the a Helle and the Mora are excellent knives, and both, in my opinion, are the very best in their price range and hard to beat!

For those not familiar with them, Mora make low price but good quality knives. They generally have plastic handles and sheaths, and simply ground blades with bevel grinds, but I'd rather have a bevel grind done well than any grind done badly. Sadly all too many factory knives are incredibly badly ground. Not so the Mora. You can pick most of 'em up for £10 to £12 (cheaper in Scandinavia) which is awesome value!

Helle are a notch up. Again, bevel grinds, but to the highest standard I've seen. Top quality materials, design and manufacture! Still not expensive for what you get! Helle make some knives with regular stainless blades, and others with a laminated blade. The latter are a little more expensive but worth it. I recommend Helle regularly, and nobody seems to be disappointed!

Fallkniven offer some nice knives, but bear in mind that many of these (certainly the blades) are actually made in Japan, which makes for a much more costly knife, all other factors being equal. Having said that, some of the Fallkniven knives are about the best out there at present!

Marttiini Knives also make some nice stuff, and in a different range of patterns from the Helle, so are worth looking at too! Both the Fallkniven and Marrttini are Scandinavian style too, which I assume you have a liking for.

Beyond these, I reckon you will need to move up to a custom knife to get any really noticeable improvement in quality. You will find other factory knives of different styles by many makers, but few of them equal the Helle for quality or the Mora for quality/price!

No way. It is just a tool for the cottage, when I'm out cutting down trees etc. I use it for general purpose cutting.

Great! A "Bushcraft" style knife (like the 2 I posted photos of) should be perfect for your needs. I use mine a lot for outdoors/camping stuff too.

From personal experience I would suggest either the Benchmade or Ka Bar like mentioned above.

Personally, I like my Seal Pup but that's probably a hard sell at its price point, but I promise you it works pretty hard.

Always wanted to try a Bark River but so far just stood in the store and held them. They look like they'd be good in that context but then again so do most knives above $50.
