Does it have to be Snap-On? I just did a bunch of research for my own toolbox selection and found that Lista modular drawer cabinets are better quality and actually cost less than the Snap-On boxes. Plus, you can get pretty much any drawer configuration you want, whereas the SO boxes are more limited.

Joe from Motorhead helped me out (he's a site sponsor) and I'm sure he'd be willing to discuss options with you as well. IMO, you get a lot more box for less money with Lista.

If you're wedded to SO, then their Epiq series and their KRL series are considered their "top of the line" boxes.

I love my 7023. Went the 7023 route because I eventually plan on adding a top box and the 7023 is slightly shorter than the 1023. If you are planning on adding a top box the 1023 can make the upper drawers of the top box hard to see into. If you are not adding a top box I would go with a 1023. If money is not a concern, of course you can always go the Epiq route which are truly awesome!

depends on what kind of drawer configuration you can make the best use of. It also depends on how big of a footprint you want it to have. The Epiq is their "top of the line" box but some prefer the KRL masters series boxes. If youre looking for a brand spankin new box, the KR1000 is out but according to a lot of people, it was the 'best" box Snap On ever made.
If money and space isn't an issue, they make a 144" long Mr Big Epiq :D

Get a HF box its just as red at a fraction of the size :lol_hitti

Fixed it for you. Sometimes I have to wonder if half the guys on this board have seen an HF box next to a bigger Snap-on, Mac etc. It's great that there is a small and affordable solution like the HF box for home owners and the like but a lot of us just dont have wall space, shop space or time to waste by having 5 44" HF boxes or 3 52" HF boxes or 2 72" HF boxes just to store the tools that fit in a KRL box.

To the OP, the classic 96 is a good box but for the size I'd probably prefer a krl1022 due to the fewer and larger drawers (unless you dont like the height). Both boxes are about 33k cubic inches but the 1022 has 1000 sq inches more drawer space.

I've got a current KRA series. It's a decent box and I didn't pick it but I'm fairly satisfied with it. Next box will be a KRL or an Epiq series. I need the higher drawer capacity and I'd really, really like to have more depth. Personally I'd try to step up to a KRL (used if possible) vs. going with a new classic 96...

I had a really nice Snapon box, can't remember the model# exactly. Paint came up from the bottoms up.
Snapon would not warranty, as they finish on their boxes isn't covered by it. I got rid of that turd and got a Macsimizer. Best box I've ever owned.

just a question, but do you pro wrenches get to write off those huge boxes at tax time?

I just sold my snap on box, I'm no pro wrench, but I'm going a different route, since mine is at home, I've outgrown my old box and wasn't about to pay the price of another Snap on box. I'd love to if I could afford the biggest baddest they had, I'd be all over it, but I can't.
Hell the guy who bought my old box is a dr. who has airplanes and wanted something in his hanger, and I'm sure he could have afforded a new bad azz top of the line box, but thankfully he bought mine.

I would suggest a KRL.
I picked up a KRL7023 for $3500 and got the matching black hutch recently for $1800.
Much better than spending $9600 box + $3600 hutch + $1k for stainless top.

They are all over craigslist and ebay, you just have to be patient and you can pick them up for good prices.

I am no pro either but there is nothing like a pro box, the space and quality is second to none.

I have had a number of Snap-on and Mac boxes. Twenty years ago I bought one of the first Maximiser boxes From Mac. I am afraid to buy a new box as I can't imagine anything working or looking as good as mine. Others I have worked with have traded into new and used Mac, Snap-on, Cornwell and Matco boxes and I still prefer my Maximiser.

And to the other question unless you own the shop or are paid as an independent contractor, no it is not possible to write the cost of tools and boxes off on taxes. As per the three tax accountants I have used in the past. The only redeeming quality is the resale for your wife after your dead. And of course the tools and boxes really are better to work with.

I have looked very close at HF tools and boxes they are NOT the same, not trying to be pissy just saying.

I have the Master Series 1022 with the add on Power Bank at work. I love it but I am about to the point I need to upgrade to a 73" box. Personally I do not like the Epiq series drawer latches.

Yeah, same here. I chose the KRL for a reason.

OP- the difference between the 7 and 1 series is about 7" in height. The 1 series is taller cause they added a drawer across the top over the 7 series.
Personally, I like the height of the 7 series much better.

Your tax accountant is wrong. Or maybe I should be in jail for tax fraud...

I have a master 7022 and I like it. I bought it a couple years ago and I need to upgrade now. I am getting out of the business so I won't upgrade though. I like my box but would like a 7023 or 1022 more. I just need a little more room, but not enough to justify the purchase.

Not sure if you'd be interested in a used one, but my father is selling all his tools and boxes due to his age, and he has a snap-on tool box he is getting rid of.

I was only breaking chops with the HF comment.

On a serious note, get something big enough so you wont have to buy another, or get one where a hutch can be added. If you think its big enough, it probably insnt.
