I have used hand sanitizer (alcohol) that way it can rest in place longer to help penetrate before evaporating , Baby wipes on skin and tough on painted surface I have used magic erase sponges. They are essentially very fine sandpaper and could matte the finish so be careful.

We use some stuff at work labeled SCQ for wiping down forklifts and it really gets the sharpie marks off well. It will also take off spray paint but the oem paints/powder coats are safe.

I had a white refrigerator in college that everyone "tagged" with magnum sharpies. I soaked a rag with acetone. One swipe with it took the marker right off. No need t scrub or wait at all. The powder coat finished was not the slightest bit compromised and we got our deposit back.

But as everyone has said, test an inconspicuous spot first.

PVC cleaner will do it, BUT try a small spot first.
Ehhh yeah it will do it. But it also takes off certain paints like nothing.

The dry erase thing sounds cool, I'll have to try that some time. If that doesn't do the trick I'd try acetone.

Bon-Ami powder and a damp sponge will remove the Sharpie marks, but may dull the paint a little bit. All you have to do is go over the area with Meguiars Ultimate Compound afterwards to restore the shine.

Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol) is the best. It will not harm the finish of the box.

Dry Erase marker will remove the permanent marker

WD 40 and a Magic Eraser, guaranteed. Won't harm the paint.

I would say it depends on the marker in question...

"Genuine" Sharpies are best removed with plain ol WD40...safe on any finish, comes right off.

Milwaukee brand permanent markers on the other hand WD barely dented..I had to use the Dry Erase trick.

In my experience, some products actually make it worse...I had tried to remove some permanent marker marks on a pallet jack I bought...used brake-clean thinking it would be no issue...all it did was "dull" the black and permanently embed the markings it in the paint. on the other side of the same pallet jack I used WD and it wiped right off.

Parents with children know all the tricks to permanent marker removal... :lol_hitti

I worked in a lab many moons ago. Sharpie marker on everything. Rubbing alcohol works, but 95% isopropyl alcohol (same as rubbing alcohol, but 95% instead of 70%, both available at the drugstore) works best and gets every bit of ink off.

I have a tool with what looks like sharpie but 70% didn't touch it and 91% iso didn't really take any off, just made it a little dull. non-acetone polish remover didn't do it, brush cleaner didn't do it. Ronson lighter fluid for a zippo didn't do it.

I will give a try with WD-40, is it possible a dry erase is going to touch it if 91% didn't?

You probably don't want to put anything on it that will damage the paint.

I haven't seen Plumbers putty mentioned or Goo Gone. They work

if isopropanol on a rag doesn't get it off, rub it with a white draftsman's eraser while still wet.

I bought some metal drawers on FB. They had marker all over the drawers. I came across a few threads about removing the writing and thought I would add what worked for me for anyone else trying to remove marker.

I can confirm the following will not work:
-glass cleaner
-WD-40
-writing over the writing with a Sharpie

These kinda work:
-Goo Gone. I really had to scrub to see even just a little removal. Would not recommend.
-Magic Eraser. Removed very little.

I can confirm this will work:
-91% isopropyl alcohol (70% did nothing) worked the best. I had to scrub with a paper towel, but it came off. The paper towel had some color from the drawers, but the finish looked fine.

Brake cleaner and acetone have always worked for me and require little effort. Just a matter of whether what is under the sharpie will be damaged by those chems.

Here’s a good order of operations from least destructive to most:

Dawn dish soap and water
Rubbing alcohol
acetone
brakekleen chlorinated kind
brake fluid
acetelyne torch

guarateed to eventually get the ink off. Ink can’t stick if the toolbox is liquid 😂
