7510's a Diesel...ah, got it. That is another whole can of worms! So you got to be a farmer and a mechanic...and a jack of all trades...LOL! Totally respect what you do and thanks for sharing your trials here on the GJ.

Nice of that parts man to check that out for you lol

I guess I can’t complain too much. Honestly in the last 10 years I think I can only think of maybe 3 times I’ve had a problem with one of the many, many parts I’ve ordered from Deere. Granted on of those times was just last summer...but still

Yeah it’s a diesel. The only things that aren’t diesel around the farm are a few small pump engines, the lawn mower and all but 2 of the old two cylinders.

Not sure I can really consider myself a mechanic. There are a lot of days I feel like I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.

Thanks though.

Decided to treat myself a little.
c672ecbb14ec1adf95deaf77ecf20cfe.jpg
I decided to get a Leatherman tool, as if I don’t carry enough on my person every day of the week. But I thought it’d be handy. Plus I lost a good little utility knife a couple weeks ago. A 3 blade Kobalt knife my mom got for my several weeks ago. Nothing special just a cheaper knife I didn’t mind being hard on. Held up really well.

Then a USA Buck knife. I lost a good Kershaw last summer. Since then I’ve been carrying my “weekend” pocket knife on a daily basis. I’m hoping the orange handle will help me from loosing it.

I carry too much stuff on me. But regardless
of where I go I have to have a pocket knife. I’ve carried a pocket knife on me almost every day since about the 5th grade (even though technically I wasn’t supposed to). I just can’t go without.

I loved my wingman...until I lost it. Now I have a Rev (pretty much the same thing) and carry it everyday (just like I did for the wingman). I can never go back to my Snap-on kershaw or anything b/c a leatherman is just so handy. Although I was shocked how high the prices were in Farm & Fleet over break -- I remember buying them for like half as much in high school

I’ve been wanting a Leatherman for quite sometime I’d just never get one. Plus I don’t think any store in town carries them.

I still like to have a regular ole pocket knife for certain things so I like to have both. But knives definitely aren’t cheap. Not for a decent made one anyway.

Same for binoculars I discovered....

Should’ve got some stuff done in the shop today. But I had some stuff at home to do.

Typical day today.

Had some rain late last night so it was back to mud again. But today was about 60 and we had some sun for a change so it wasn’t too bad today.
ca6693efb4f4d2961ed2b6f4b98b8ce4.jpg
Fed a few bales of rye and put out some straw for all the cattle. Hopefully it’ll encourage the new young calves to lay down on something dry.

420eeb75e52ccfd6a14a9a4f91b1c996.jpg
Last night I made an inspection sheet for the new anhydrous applicator. I also finished up with my updated list of serial numbers, VIN & license plates, filter list and a cross reference for filters. All those are laminated. A set for the truck and a set for the toolbox in the shop. An extra set for just in case. Also so sheets to keep track how how much feed I’m grinding and how much mineral I’m feeding.

This afternoon I finally started on the steering meter assembly for the 8760.

Almost finished up with it but I had to get going. I’m hoping the tissue paper like “shims” hold up and aren’t wrinkled up and leak after I get it all together.

In between that my b-i-l tried to look a few more things over on the 7510.
5788c2e253ed5f1be69638c4b92895c1.jpg
We went back and checked a few things over again. Tried going through the injection system manual some more too.

42c113dc9723ccc1f42bd7e82f06c0cf.jpg
Took care of the calf too of corse.

5cb0159568d15c376a7717fc2176c146.jpg
Also got a used brake valve in for the 4010. It’s going to have to be rebuilt. But it should hopefully solve our problem.

5643315522b3c75e9d094e4fac2e7f45.jpg
We also got this plate for the 4010. I’m not sure I’ve ever shown it. But someone before had replaced the hydraulic pump on the 4010 and just decided to take it out by cutting a big piece of this plate out. Which is right in front of the radiator. Which naturally allows the radiator to **** up a bunch of excess and unwanted dirt. So we’re going to fix that problem. The other piece is for the 4020. It’s the piece that cracked somehow last year and was leaking. I did a quick temporary fix with some JB Weld. Well it’s not holding up and it’s leaking again. So we’re going to fix that issue as well. As if I needed more stuff to work on.

I think you secretly like working on this stuff. I know I like seeing these little bits and pieces coming together to get a machine back up to snuff.

Can you fit that large plate in a blast cabinet, or are you going to have to wirewheel it?

I don’t mind servicing stuff. Doing the regular routine checks on stuff. But something like this issue with the 7510 I don’t enjoy. That stuff drives me crazy. The main thing is just trying to avoid break downs. Cuz those I really don’t enjoy! My patience wears thin when it’s something that could’ve easily been avoided had things been looked at earlier.

My b-i-l has a cabinet that I think the plate could fit in. But if I had to guess we’ll probably just take a wire wheel to it. Might be a little quicker. Plus, If we get too carried away with it it’d be the cleanest looking part on the tractor.

Have your heard anything more from the Macnaught people? Love the fluid cart.

Thanks!

I haven’t talked to them much in the last couple weeks. I’ve been trying to focus on getting some of this stuff around here done.

I’ve taken some pictures for them and made a short 2 minute video on me using the pumps in the shop. Showing how quick it
Is to go from one type of oil to the other.

Other than that I’ve just been trying to hand out some fliers and catalogs to a few places that might be interested in dealing Macnaught products. But I haven’t really had much interest yet.

They’ve asked if I’d be interested in being a dealer. But I’d have to get a business license set up as a LLC before I could do that. Plus, besides some individuals I haven’t seen much opportunity to move very many products. People are content with their cheap grease guns or use other battery operated ones. For some reason if LockNLube couplers have a fairly strong presence here, although I only know a hand full of people that actually use them. Then as far as the oil pumps go I’m not really sure. I’m not sure everyone would be interested at the price.

But I’ve been trying to get the name out there a little. I know they’ve been working with some other guys in other industries as well. So they’ve really been working on getting their name out there more.

Finally an area of my expertise lol

used to make and mod a lot of custom Leatherman's, the go-to was adding Victorinox scissors to the Wave and Charge.

The wingman is a great too as long as it isn't too small for your hands. It's one of the only tools that offers spring loaded pliers, but DO NOT trust the pocket clip, it'll slip out of just about anything. (The Wingman, Rev, and Sidekick are the same tools but offer different options besides the knife on the outside)

The Wave+ or Chare+ is a great step up and not as much weight as a Surge or Super Tool 300. People love rebars but you can't access anything on the outside, and it doesn't have a pocket clip option.

I personally carry the new Free P4 lineup right now and love it but they magnets pick up a lot of junk over time. All in a nylon sheath with ab OLight i3t eos everyday now for about 2 years, before that it was pocket carry. The flashlight is a huge improvement over a phones led, plus it clips onto a ballcap.

Once you get a solid PM schedule, Then do the impossible and make everyone that touches that equipment do basic checks, things still breakdown an operators still trash stuff, but it does become far more manageable. im responsible for 1/4 mile long line of equipment in a sawmill, and until i got the preventive, predictive and inspection stuff figured out everything was a mad scramble. you definitely seem to have a pretty good handle on things

Thanks. I think there are definitely some things I could improve upon. I’d like to be able to work a little more on the predictive part a little bit and head more things off before they become an issue. Plus, with most of this equipment being older I’d like to learn more about common issues associated with each piece. I suppose if I did more digging on the internet I could find more answers. Might be easier on some of these things than prying information out of one of the guys at Deere.

Seeing as I’m several days behind rather than a day by day up date to catch things up I’m going to do it in pieces.

To start we’re going to cattle. The weather this week, besides a touch of rain, has been great. Last week wasn’t bad at all either.

Been taking care of things as usual. Feeding corn, hay, mineral. Put up some backrubbers as some of the cattle seem to have some lice annoying them lately.

Last week we lost one of the young cows at the retirement farm. Overnight she was having her calf and ended up rolling over on her back in a low spot in the pasture and was unable to get herself up, killing her and the calf. Then we had an older cow have twins and neither one of them made it. Both died right away.

On the other hand the 5 bred heifers dad had bought back in the fall all successfully had their first calves last week. All are doing well. But there are a few of them that insist on finding low places in the fences they can crawl under and get out. Which ends up driving the heifers crazy being on the wrong side of the fence.

So other than the mishaps last week they’re all currently doing good. Just a few calves I’m keeping a close eye on. Last week dried up finally and I think it’s the driest the cattle have had it all winter long. I think they enjoyed it. Hopefully, it will somewhat continue being like that.

I’m other cattle related things we finally cleared out a part of the barn that had a wagon full of old lumber, some good, some not.

So the good stuff we stacked up in another part of the barn. We cleared it out so we could at least move the cattle alley we bought last year into the barn.

We got everything moved in for now but don’t have a finally set up. Dad bought a head gate but had to make and weld on some loops so we can hook it up to the alley way with the pins and gates.

We had some fence fixing to do. A few small dead trees fell on a fence early this week and a cow ventured out in to the neighbors field.

Found an old cattle medication bottle over on the neighbor’s side while in the process.

The next day I ran it for awhile. So far so good. No leaks and no gradually drift to the left.

It also got a good bath over the weekend.

In between everything else it was decent enough last week dad was able to spread fertilizer.

Spread fertilizer on the pastures, rye ground and fescue patches. We also had the MFA spray fertilizer on our wheat too.

On to the 7510. We were determined the starting issue had to be the pump.

2b4bd2720046b6fd9b557c99e8aff498.jpg
So we decided to take it out. We decided to pull it in the truck shed as we have the annual preschool farm trip this week. We weren’t sure how long it may take to have the pump fixed.

34f70206c893aa1f7d7d11aa8b40cc42.jpg
Took a little bit but we got it out.
3a1770af1bbbc95d3d1ebecb0023c62e.jpg
Being we were that far in it we decided to remove the injectors as well.

I dropped the pump off at a shop next county down last Friday. Today we got the call that it was done and the injectors were also in from Deere too.

604c555dbc05e8e001f1ee344d124f87.jpg
So with the help of my b-i-l for disassembly and assembly we got the rebuild pump and the new (remanufactured) injectors in. It all went pretty smooth.
8e55c6dc29062f1c1a59a1187ce1d32f.jpg
After getting the lines bled we started it and it fired right up. No issues. It ran great. So finally the 7510 is ready to go. It only took 3 months. But it’s ready. I plan to run it tomorrow for a little while just to double check that everything checks out right.

As always, thank you for sharing your day to day with us.
We really appreciate it and I'm sure it sometimes feels like posting is another rock in the backpack that you have to swim across life's raging river.

Easiest way is to drill and tap the stuck case for 1/4 x 20, use all thread 1/4 x 20 with nut and washer and deep socket over stuck case. Thread in all thread into case, deep socket over all thread on top of die, washer then nut, then tighten nut which pulls out stuck case.

Thanks. I’m not always sure I do keep everything straight. Since I’m never caught up.

Thanks. I have to say it’s definitely hard to get caught up after so many days away.

The easy out worked really good after getting a drill through it. I think this is about the third time I’ve had to do this for him.

Surprised you managed to get some fertilizer down as wet as it has been. Some have been using helicopter for wheat, yeah it's that wet and more coming.

Hurts to loose cattle like that, hope the rest of the year goes better.

One of the other jobs I’ve been doing is working on the 8400.
09d8401b7389dc26e11469bef80986f3.jpg
It was time to fix that leaking gasket on the thermostat housing.
68135a61f4ecc78a3f531ac985d55543.jpg
So I drained the cooling system, had to take off all the hoses and removed the reservoir for the radiator.
4f4ff9220ba2c7c03fa95d060faa7439.jpg
So first I tried out that Matco flush gun.
58c82621392271f003c5930e837b49ba.jpg
I flushed the radiator. Then flushed rest of the cooling system.
7d64d8f92ead4c125dcae089b4ba7f4e.jpg
I attached a hose to everything so I didn’t have to worry about the mess of a bunch of water in the shop.
653ef63102fa78dab93c8f6c96f3f32f.jpg
I ran it over to the door so it went outside.
9428827750793575128bd4b21840f81c.jpg
Luckily the system was decently clean. So I didn’t have to flush it too much. I thought the gun worked pretty decent. It runs water through it then you can trigger air to kind of pressurize it to flush a little better.

While replacing hoses and gaskets I had to take the bypass pipe loose that goes to the top of the water pump. There’s a seal there. It didn’t look the best so I decided to replace it. I got a new one from the dealer...
de5e6ae28815732e9896f33c07b1cea0.jpg
But that didn’t work...you can see a little bit of a lip in the end and the rubber on top. Well I couldn’t get that thing drove in without ruining the rubber. But I was just trying to put it in the way it was when I took the old one out. The water pumps been replaced before...by a Deere mechanic...come to find out the seal had previously been put in upside down...
99df264ea6468c0e8b33c2e1b0eab5ff.jpg
After talking to a current Deere mechanic I found it was a hell of a lot easier to put it in the other way. So I go the seal put in, an o-ring, both thermostat gaskets and new thermostats.
2948574c7832113ea5d0c2aca9d5f5df.jpg
But I finally got it all together and filled up.
36fc65f1186440a1f3ea8b776e0fa783.jpg
c0c0a21c028d0634704280e98e08975b.jpg
I ran it a little bit to be sure there were no leaks. Then while I was looking other things over I put my pressure tester on it overnight just to make everything was good.
bb154569d5c4cb1c835609108005159f.jpg
I looked everything over and started waxing it.
1d265d5c888b390d71c93ca6ed2727ae.jpg
Then today I finished it up.
79c67f39e814e116c0567043a88591cd.jpg
7d0127d4b19cac1ce16f04a6d5cb0d5e.jpg
It’s all cleaned up and ready to go. Ready for tomorrow and should hopefully be field ready. But I did make a number of notes for some preventative repairs I’d like to take care of by it’s next service or maybe during the summer when it’s not being used if I get a chance.

Last week was really nice. Breezy days with warm temperatures really started to dry things out. It was dry enough for fertilizer but that was about it. Had we been able to have a handful more days without rain we could’ve probably, maybe, been able to start doing a little field work.

Pretty much caught up. At least with the main stuff. So we’ll end up with today. Damp and cloudy.

Had quite a bit of fog this morning as well. All the cattle were good.

But it was time to get things cleaned up and ready for the kids tomorrow.

Dad decided to try a new set up for the hay/straw fort.

So we’re pretty much ready for tomorrow. The shop isn’t quite as tip top shape and clean as we usually have it for this occasion. But I think it’ll do.

Well it got a little bit wetter. It didn’t amount to much. We were supposed to end up with some severe weather. But all we end up with was a small shower. Had we got sun it would’ve built something up. But it was heavy clouds all day long.

Supposed to end up with more rain this weekend and next week as well. So right now it doesn’t sound like any field work any time soon.

Markets have been worth a ****. This whole corona scare has really hit it pretty hard. But it has that as well as the stocks, oil (I’m ok with that part!) and everything else.

I talked to Macnaught this week. It sounds like their high volume (BOP-HV) is due to hit the market in about a month. Also a stem for ATF around the same time. They expect to have a metered gun for the BOP set up by middle of the year out as well. So it sounds like they’re really going to be extending their options for this line up. They’re supposed to be working on some more new products too. But I haven’t heard much about those yet.

So there we go. At least the big points of the last 10 days are so.

The old anhydrous toolbar is going to an auction this weekend. Of corse the day it was listed on the sale bill I finally had someone contact me about it. But they’re going to the sale to try and buy it. Not sure how well it’ll go since it’s supposed to be raining Saturday. We’ll see.

Not a whole lot to talk about from Friday.

Got up to check on all the cattle.

Took care of the calves.

Then we waited for the kids to arrive. Everything went well. They fed the cows, fed the calf, got tractor rides, had a hay ride, played in the shop. Everything went well. Never had any upsets or tears. I think this is the cleanest the shop has ever stayed too.

After they all left it was cleaned up time. Had to put out hay too.

Got the 8760 pulled it and ready to work on too.
