What’s the issue with mounting to the fender?

Fenders are expensive, making a bracket that mounts to the axle housing is not. Vibration and yanking a joystick around over time will strain the fender, and eventually waller out the holes that were drilled to mount the controls. Its just annoying and will rot the fender faster. It also means that if they decide to move the loader to another tractor in the future, it will need holes drilled in it, or a bracket made.

That’s worded better than my explanation.

Plus no offence to your dad but installs like that look lazy and unprofessional. Even if it is ergonomically placed.

I agree 100%. I told more than once we shouldn’t do it like that. I also told him more than once that there was no need for us to do it right now. In another month we should be done feeding hay and wouldn’t absolutely need the 3020 by then for much. Plus I’m sure we can move our old 148 at any time.

It’s times like that when we tend to bump heads a little.

Back. At it today. Did all the feeding, checking on calves, putting out hay.

The ground is getting drier, temps are staying warmer and I’m getting behind on getting things ready to go.

I got the 8760 and field cultivator from the bottom shed to start looking over. I also brought the anhydrous toolbar our to look over as well.

Dad managed to get ahold of a fertilizer spreader and started spreading fertilizer on the pastures.

But we had another problem develop.

One of the ball joints on the tie-rod assembly of the front axle of the 7230 has developed a lot of wear and play. It’s not looking too good. So another job to add to the list.

Even though I wanted to get it done a lot earlier than now, this afternoon I went to a few farms to get some soil samples.

I loaded up the Kubota, sample probe, bags, shovel, and iPad to use the FieldView program to pin point the locations where I took samples.

I made a second trip to the retirement farm. I locked up the small calf out there with the cow. The calf has been limping so I’m hoping to look him over in the morning.

I had to quit early for an Extension Meeting this evening. Going to be a busy week this week.

I've been following since you began posting. Don't worry about falling behind you have to do what you have to do especially this time of year. I've been wondering how concerned you are about the flooding upstream. I assume that you are on the Mississippi and have some ground in the flood plain.

Goodluck!

Well I actually have a little on that from this week. We’re not overly concerned at this point about anything. But we are getting some extra water right now on the river. I think it’s just all so spread out that the river didn’t rise quite as high as some people had expected it to be. I’ve been keeping up with the river stages lately. The crest has gradually dropped from what it was. But we’re going to definitely have some water for awhile.

It has definitely been a busy week. Had enough rain to slow things down early this morning and more rain by the evening. So I’m taking a break today and should get an update posted on the week.

Well Tuesday was a busy one. I rounded up the calf with the limp and gave him a shot and sprayed some stuff on this foot. But I also loaded up the one young cow.
5fc7c6ed3629c09eea4bccd17f8a72d1.jpg
It looked as though she was trying to have a calf but was not longer trying to push. I was concerned and didn’t want to take a chance on loosing her so I took her in to the vet. Turns out she was aborting the calf that wasn’t all the along yet. But she was having trouble getting it all out. But the vet assisted with that.

While I took care of that dad continued fertilizing the pastures.

I also got back to taking soil samples.

I attempted to take a few samples in the bottom.

But it’s wet down there. Seep wells are running strong.

Outside of the levee is nothing but water. The river was supposed to crest near the top of the levee. Luckily that was changed to almost 7 foot less. Which is much better.

Since January 1 we’ve had over twice the amount of average precipitation to date for the year. That amount has made a lot of sink holes break out!

For the evening I laid out all my soil samples to dry out.

I also did a nice thing for the day.

I picked some Easter flowers for my girlfriend. She even liked the vase I put them in so much that she kept them in it.

On to Wednesday.

I checked on the calf and the young cow at the retirement farm early to make sure they were both doing ok.

I went down to dad’s and loaded up mineral and corn to check on the rest of the cattle.

I also took care of a few other jobs. Went to the bottom and got the anhydrous tool bar to look it over and get it ready to go. I also picked up the 8760 and pulled out the field cultivator with it.

I didn’t get the 8760 looked over but I got started on replacing some shovels on the cultivator.
038dc6417f18a07fa98bd7950345852e.jpg
We also had a bit of rain fall while I was working on that.

I had to quit a bit early for to see a friend for his birthday. Plus I was getting a little wet as the cultivator won’t fit inside the shop.

On to Thursday.

Dad has discovered Facebook marketplace in the last month or so, which is a little dangerous.
a286a23428d2e23d075f8bce900cfc9e.jpg
He found a set of front weights to mount on to the 4010. I’m not sure what he paid for them but I know he got a pretty good deal on them. Plus it was from a guy in town.

We moved the big calves from my uncles over to dad’s to be the the bigger lot.
3d221c416ed744e12946ab959a2c3a52.jpg
That was after we ran all 25 through and gave them their shots and cut all the bulls.

As soon as we finished with the big calves we got things ready ween more smaller calves.

We weened another 31 all together. We took all them over to the lot at my uncles.

Parts for the 7230 came in as well.
74e7a608317021c3c2126894f27882ea.jpg
Although it may be a bit until I can get it in the shop.

I also picked up some metal for dad to redo our old bucket for the 148 loader.

The old one busted years ago and hasn’t been used in a long time. Dad wants to fix it up so we can use it again. We even got a new cutting edge from Deere to put on it.

That evening we quit a bit to all go out to eat for mom’s birthday.

Friday was busy as well. Did all the feeding.
Checked on all the cattle.

Dad had spread dry fertilizer on all the pastures, fescue hay ground and the wheat.

Things were drying in the hills. So also due to all that extra precipitation it’s washed a lot of places in the fields. So we’re trying to fix those spots before we get in the fields to put on anhydrous and plant.

We may even try to make a few water ways in some of those places to avoid washing in the future.

542ad693a67042ee35f6e8e72bbb69c2.jpg
So I headed out with 8760 and field cultivator and dad headed out with the 7230 and box blade.

Dad used the box blade for the deepest washed spots and I’d level things up with the cultivator. If you see the rock out there we had some sink holes break out. We had some rock brought in and attempted fill them in a bit.

So we worked on that for the rest of the day.

On to Saturday. It started about the same.
ef1546db8fe443c2b829889887d15f10.jpg

Unfortunately, the bull over at my uncle’s was declining in health. We noticed last week he wasn’t looking too good. This week he had a limp on one his back legs. We gave him some antibiotics and kept a close eye on him. But by Thursday was on down. We couldn’t get him to get up. We tried to help him out. But it wasn’t looking good. So Saturday morning we put him down.

After taking care of the cattle we moved the tractors from one farm to another fixing washed spots.

04cdec951806f609f812f0c0eae53864.jpg
But by about 5:30 this came to a stop for the evening. A hose blew on the field cultivator and almost the same time a hose blew on the box blade as dad was using it.

The hose on the cultivator is going to be a pain to pull through the tongue.

So at 5:30 on a Saturday there’s no place in town to have a hose made. The only place I’ve been able get a hose made after hours is at the New Holland dealership. Unfortunately, the grandson of the owner was getting married that day. All of them also farm as well. So I knew there wasn’t any way I’d be able to get them to make me a hose.

So we were down for the evening.

I fed Ben and called it a day.

So I caught up with the Snap On guy during the week.
ea6e7665ce1bcc9c0abdce7ae4c39adb.jpg
Got a new larger bearing splitter, which I also need to get another puller for, and a 10mm torque extension. I’m actually hoping it’ll work for the plug on the gearbox on the round baler. We’ll see.

Owners of the retirement farm gave me some old wrenches from the farm.
ee649c320ca53f5b276ba72d3f4f1579.jpg
The flare nut is an old Bonney that I liked. The middle in an old Ford wrench and graduated too, I’ve personally never seen one like this. The offset one to the far right is another Ford. There were quite a few more but I passed on those. Lots of older ones. They were all US made. But they were a lot of large old bulky things. Several didn’t even have sizes on them. A few were broken, some of the broken ones had even been poorly welded back together. So I hope to get them cleaned up and maybe use a few of them.

Love following your thread about life on the farm. A quick question, with the amount of hose you go through wouldn't it maybe make sense to buy a hydraulic hose crimp so you can make your own? The are not that expensive and with some stock hose and fittings you'd never need to wait nor buy another hose. Just a thought. Back to lurk mode!

I’ve considered it. But trying to have all the proper fittings on had would sometimes be tough as well. It’d be an expensive initial investment. But between trying to have the different flat face o-ring, JIC, SAE port fittings, metric port fittings, and pipe thread fittings, plus the different sizes and types of hoses.

Like anything perhaps, pick the biggest use, then add to it as you need too.

I'd guess hose is not as critical so long as it can deal with the fluid passing through it.

An increased diameter would only mean you'd need to add more fluid if I remember correctly. Fluid is not compressible, so what ever is in the line will still move transfer the same amount of force despite the volume of the line so long as there is no air in the line of course.

Anyway might look at the numbers and see if it works. Worst case is you have to have a hose made...

Again, thanks for keeping us up to date with life on the farm!!

God I hope you pulled a string through on the way!

Yeah. I used some baling wire. Only problem was it didn’t quite want to take the same path through that it did coming out. It had to wiggle it back and forth a few times before I was finally able to get in all the way back through.

What's the reasoning for dumping a bunch of rock in the tile holes vs fixing the tile?

One reason being we’ve always had good luck with large rock keeping the hole from breaking out further and still allowing water to drain in the hole. Second being a landlord is a lot more willing to pay for a few loads of rock than paying to have a bunch of dirt work done and put in structures. Especially, when we’re just about ready to get in the field to start planting for the spring.

I'm glad we don't get those here. No mines etc either like HFW has in WI.

I'm surprised you successfully charge the landlord.

We have loads of sink holes in this area. Lots of caves. We actually have the part of the largest (or second largest, I can’t remember) cave in the state. It goes down into the next county. Supposed to be over 30 miles long. But anyway, several of the places we farm have a lot of sink holes. So we’re used to working around them. However, with having an exceptional amount of rainfall over the last 2 years new holes are starting to show up.

This one is usually pretty reasonable to work with, not all the time, but sometimes. But there are definitely a few who would be some willing to do so.

Back at it today after a day off yesterday. Started the day off feeding hay to all the cattle. Ben is doing good, the calf with the limp is getting better, but we had another sick one this morning that we had to give a shot to. Big calves are doing well, the newly weened calves are mostly doing good too.
813eca0dfa3fd36d63d013cc4ea3bfbd.jpg
We fed all the hay that we had over at my uncle’s so we loaded up a load of bales on the smaller gooseneck trailer to take to his place so there is enough hay for the week.

There were some round straw bales left over at my uncle’s that had to be stored outside since there was no shed room for them. Some of them were looking pretty rough from sitting out all this time.
7d249dd12f884653d7d30c1e418a952b.jpg
So since we had the trailer we loaded up a load of straw bales to take to a few field that had large washed spots along the edges, especially next to patches of woods.

While dad put out the straw bales I went to town to have new hydraulic hoses made.
ca1f9f79c34aae28300fe95431f6fedb.jpg
The vise on my bumper came in handy for that.
e37261fc14802adf58a3651d53d002e1.jpg
So I had new hoses on both the cultivator and the box blade.

One thing we’re going to try to get done since we’ve been working on the washed spots in the field is plant some water ways.
d0e0d4be29adf53a1892b720b50c9e2e.jpg
So I went to check the tires on our older 8300 drill. It’s stored in a shed out at one of the farms we rent. I’m not sure this has ever been seen in this thread. But small things like water ways is why we’ve kept this drill around. But I bet it’s been about 6 years since we’ve used it.
3fc0acec5fc28553dd88a8f8e6dcc509.jpg
We also have a 1630 disk in the same shed as the drill. It hasn’t been used in more years than the drill.

I did a few small jobs in between everything else today. Also, had to get new batteries for the 4010 today too. Not sure what happened with them but one of two went completely bad. Hopefully, the new ones will hold up and there isn’t some sort of electrical issue going on. So I put those in this evening.

The switch in the bench grinder went out.
3b722230d541de73cedd79ff5c3fd061.jpg
So I took it out this evening to find a replacement soon. Since it wasn’t working I couldn’t use the wire wheel on it.
e6c3dba223252cc375b3a0d7a709c3b8.jpg
So I brought home those wrenches I got from the retirement farm and letting them soak in vinegar to clean the rust off of them.

So if I hadn’t mentioned we had some rain Sunday morning, followed by a little more rain over night Sunday. Naturally, the fields we were going to work in ended up with the most rain. So it’s put field activities to a halt.

Did the daily chore of checking all calves and cattle.
fb348adea89045d28d5ba37dc48295af.jpg
Golden Harvest guy brought by seed corn for us. I may have forgot to mention we received some of our other seed corn last week too.
dde6aefac36c7cf20cd127d347fa67be.jpg
Got a few “free” things from the Golden Harvest guy.

At the end of the week my dad and uncle are going to their last tractor pull for the winter circuit. With being rained out the fields those 2 spent most of the day getting the pulling tractors ready to go.

While they worked on that I looked over the anhydrous toolbar and made sure things were good to go.
74ff070e4a88a6b8231933c1816055f2.jpg
I probably said this last year, but there ain’t much to the old thing. It’s just about shot. Hopefully we can come up with a replacement for it after this year. Just not an expensive one.

After I looked over the toolbar I backed the 7230 in the shop. It is due for service.
5218a608644d59ecd184f4b76948690c.jpg
It’s hard to get it in the shop since it’s always being used for so many things. But I needs a good inspection done from time to time so it can keep doing all those things.

After dad finished messing with the pulling tractors he decided to at least get a start on his loader bucket project.
0eaabf560d570f271f3f1bfbb080104c.jpg
He cut the old rusted bottom out of the bucket and got things set up a bit to start on the replacement piece. It’ll be a bit time consuming.

We both quit on what we were working on this evening to split 2 wagon loads of wood.
f74ac732bd25a4856fb9349da69fe840.jpg
We finished up just about at dark. It’s still cool enough to keep the stove burning but hopefully these loads will be more than enough until it gets warmer.

That pretty well sums up the day. Other than some news dad failed to mention to me yesterday. Remember that “helpful” friend of his? The one that really pissed me off that one day? Yeah, that guy. He wanted to borrow the 7510 and the wench yet again over the weekend. Dad allowed it. This guy and his brothers were cutting down several trees and were wanting to use the wench to drag them in the woods. But it turns out they completely ruined the wench.
d5e074725223bf832a1f52c7f5775ce4.jpg
It’s very hard to tell in this picture, partially because you can actually see everything. But for starters I’m not sure why but the bumper part of the wench they bent up all to hell. It looks like the must’ve backed it up on a tree while pulling logs. Things were bent and twisted so much there were even welds broken. But what worse is they even managed to blow apart the gearbox for the wench as well. Then they also bent the output shaft coming from the gearbox driven by the PTO. They basically completely destroyed the entire thing.
ff532f64f6cc727d958fd0d91ea316b7.jpg
They even ruined one of our cables we use to wrap around the logs.

Needless to say I didn’t even know what to say. But I told dad that this had to absolutely be the last straw. There’s no excuse for this. I’ve had enough of it. Dad has apparently been ignoring the guys phone calls the last few days to keep himself from completely going off on him over the phone. I told him he should. But I doubt he will. So I’m sure it’ll be enjoyable to see how all this plays out!

Its one thing to break a piece of borrowed equipment, things break.
Its another to return it in a condition other than how it was borrowed, ie fix it before returning it.

In my book, the guy now owns that and replacing it is his burden.

Looking @ that thing, whoever built it was pretty crafty.

Man, whoever did that could screw up a *********! Sorry you have to deal with that mess. Hopefully your Dad will decide enough is enough so you don’t have to deal with those knuckleheads any more. Think you’ve given those users plenty of chances.

Did they just bring it back without saying anything? Good grief.....

WOW! reminds me of when I borrowed a pole saw from a neighbor. After breaking his saw I bought 1 for him and 1 for me.

Wednesday started with the daily chores.
dd4161416f46d1b92317bfdc52fbac5d.jpg
Before I went to the shop I drove down the hill to the bottom to see how high the water was.

The river is backed up pretty good. Almost across the road. I’m sure by the end of the week it will be impassable for a truck.

After taking care of the cattle I drove out to pick up the 8300 drill.
fc456b614c5813b0fd446860ba7b4096.jpg

Things were still a bit wet and dad had his monthly doctors appointment so I went back to the shop to continue service on the 7230.
8ef054d7733a5596264f0296093fd9f7.jpg
Broke out my custom made offset 15/16”
eb80b98894524698b02e03fe60cdc536.jpg
I didn’t look everything over but enough to get it out the door for now.

Dad picked up some fescue seed for water ways and a few things for the drill.
fa75988030db06176f2a65e4452f3149.jpg

I had the 4010 setup on the drill ready to go. It looked good. But there seemed to be a problem with the SCV.
8a151e038816e3b51af417036899832d.jpg
31adc148429f7b3a3f0260c6a276c788.jpg
But then due to the SCV problem and dad decided he wanted to take a loader tractor we just switched to the 7230.

So I took off to get in the 8760 and finish working on the washed spots in the field. It wasn’t as dry as I’d like it to be. But there is more rain on the way so we wanted to finish things up.

So of corse dad had a hose blow on the old drill. But he made a quick fix of that. Our old 7 foot brush hog has the same cylinder with the same length hoses on it. So we stole that to keep things running.
b1b9b1d4bd2b75db3327177f2367da5e.jpg
So I finished with the washed spots on that farm at least. Dad also was able to get some rye and fescue drilled for some water ways on that farm. Let’s hope the rain doesn’t wash or drown all of it out.

I finished my night with finally finishing cleaning up those wrenches I got from the retirement farm.
c01ce312fa8e118a811d622c626a6c81.jpg
A little time and some elbow grease and they turned out pretty good. I think the 2 Ford wrench and the S-wrench will stay at the house with my old unique tool collection. The Bonney, the Thorsten offset, and the short double open end I think will find a home in the shop box.

Ok. So an update on the situation with dad’s friend. I’m not going to stay on it long. I didn’t make this thread for the personal drama.

He came by while dad was gone yesterday. I didn’t say much to him I was focusing on getting my work done. He was asking if there was anything he could help with this week. I just told him we would get everything taken care of, we didn’t need any help, I was staying out of it because this needed to be dad’s time to make a move.

After dad returned I mentioned he came by. He said on his way home he finally called him. I didn’t ask details but he said he called and gave him a major *** chewing and that it would probably be months until he’d talk to dad again. He didn’t say anything else.

So that’s where we’re at with that. Wench probably won’t be fixed or replaced anytime soon. Good thing it’s getting warmer.

So today and tomorrow is a little different. Dad will be going to a tractor pull and I am currently on my way to Columbia to the Mizzou campus for (I guess you call it) a training/meeting for the MU Extension council. My county council insisted I be one of the 2 members of our local council to attend. Supposed to be all about “leadership”, “team building” and “networking”. It makes me sound like a bad person, but it’s basically just a bunch of **** I don’t care about. But I just have to pay for my food. So that’s a plus.

I won’t be back until tomorrow evening. So in the mean time my brother-in-law is on call for things and he’ll be checking on the cattle for me.

Between tonight until Saturday we’re supposed to get a rather fair amount of rain fall. More moisture we don’t need right now. But not much a guy can do about it.
