Bicycle storage?

I just pulled the family bikes out of the shed for the soon to be nice weather. Damn things take up too much floor space.
I need some ideas people......

I don't have pics but I was struggling for space and used those Racor Pro hooks with the rope/pulley system but hung them in the attic above my garage. I then framed in / cut and opening in the ceiling drywall to allow for the lowering of the two hooks. I run the rope down to the perimeter wall and have a tie off hook (old coat/hat rack hooks - repurposed) I just put the hooks on the tires and hold the bike while pulling the rope. The bike lifts up/flips over and goes into the ceiling upside down, leaving the seat and the handbars between the drywall ceiling.

I have three bikes hanging in my garage above my head. I drill and screw a hook in a 12" long 2X4 then screw the 2x4 to the rafter, that way I am not drilling a permanent hole in the rafter. I am tall enough I can reach up, un-hook them, and go for a ride, yet they sit almost 8ft off the floor.

I got three hung from my ceiling in my garage by the front tire, I do have 13' ceilings and if you do not look up you will not see them

I use the J hooks. One for each bike in the ceiling. Hang by the rear tire.

I use a RacorPro PSB-2L Folding Bike Rack to hold the two mountain bikes my wife and I have. The built in shelf is a good place to keep a tire pump, and other miscellaneous items. It's mounted high enough on the wall so that I can roll things like the garden hose reel, mitersaw cart, and a trash can underneath but still be able to easily lift the bikes off the wall.

I like these, but too pricey. You just have to admire the simple design and functionality. Seems like something that could be easily built, by maybe changing the design some.

I plan on using the hooks from HomeDepot and putting them up as high as I can with the kids bikes lower.

These only work if you have a traditional tobtube.

They wont work with many full suspension mountain bikes or even bmx bikes with oversized top tubes.

I'm not really fond of the hooks for the front wheel... Especially on higher end bikes.

I have several of these racks from performance bikes. They go on sale seemingly every other week.

a local target had clearanced the ceiling bike lift systems. they also had the hooks for the wall that when you fold down you can hang your bike up. similar to the above post, without the stand portion. you may want to check there.

Hi boiler7904.
Does it work well with the mountain bikes? Do you have a shot of them on it?

The bikes I keep on it are Trek MTBs - 4300 and a 4500 from 2005. Both have a fairly oversized oval aluminum frame. The 4500 fits the rack better because its top tube is more level than the 4300 frame. So far I haven't had any problems as long as I watch where the pedals are on the first bike up since the bikes face different directions on the rack. Otherwise they want to hit wheels or the drivetrain.

I'm traveling for work until the end of next week and don't have any pictures with me. I'll try to remember to get one or two when I get home.

I use one of these. sorry I don't know how to link a pic. Basically mounts on the wall. Folds up if you aren't using it. 2 arms hold the bike by the top tube of the frame. About 10-15 bucks from Home Depot I think.

i actually keep my good bikes inside the house. theres 2 in the office on the walls and 2 in my bedroom. i used some oak i had and made my own stand offs that match my furniture. it really depends on the grade of bike yuo have and the level of care you give it. for most the j-hooks are good enough, others may want wall hangers

Bikes wouldn't make it in the door at my house let alone on the wall in the bedroom.

I picked up a couple of these. I liked the Racor one but the wall I want to use is where the soccer mom opens the minivan door and It would have been harder to get out of the car + they're cheap.

A buddy and I built one similar to the Performance stand.

The main sections are 1" square tube with ~7/8" or 1" bar heated and bent for the hooks. Second bike fits, but is out of frame. Can't see the bottom here, but about 18" off the ground it angles out about 45° and has a 2" pipe parallel to the bike about two feet long. All contact points are wrapped with self vulcanizing tape. Lean it against the wall and two bikes can dangle.

This used to hang under the roadie, but I had to return the rack. Single speed rules! Now they just collect dust in the corner of the guest room. Classic story I suppose...

I looked at it for my garage, but my trusses are too far apart. It requires 2 foot on center and mine are 6 feet. So, I got an electric hoist from HF, pulleys from Amazon and steel from my local guy and am welding up my own. Should be able to hold my 3 bikes and my fiancee's collection as well.

There is usually room between the garage door track and the wall for a bike on each side of the garage door. This is often wasted space. I will try to take some pics tonight to show my arrangement.

I made a rack that holds 4 bikes from a 4' wide wire basket I picked up at a closing Circuit City. I used a bolt cutter to fabricate wheel slots on a slant so the bikes don't stick out so far. I also have 3 bikes hanging under a cantilever shelf system from the same store. I had done something similar with stick built shelves that were in the garage before using some old hollow core doors. I mounted them at about 7 feet and put stuff that had been on the floor up high and hung the bikes underneath. The new method looks much better. It helps that I got rid of 3 bikes, but we still have a total of 8 hanging in that corner.

After months of procrastination (i.e., other higher priority projects) it only took two days to build, paint and install. Have to balance the weight of the bikes to get it to rise evenly, but that is OK by me. Now I know why the gorilla gator uses two cables to lift it evenly.

The straps I ordered were made strapworks.com for carrying things like yoga mats. They work great for bikes too.

I love those hoist systems but my ceiling is too low for that. I ended up going with the Rubbermade track system with the wheel mounts.

FYI...I saw a few inverted bikes in this thread with suspension forks. Not a great idea for long term storage. Those seals up top weren't meant to be exposed to that much volume and the forks will start to leak. Always keep the crown as the highest point on the fork. If you wall mount your bike hanging from the rear wheel it keeps the crown high enough to prevent leaking (that is what I do...no issues).

I hang my bikes from the Gladiator Claw. They work well. Some reviews think they are gimicky, but I took the leap because they were on sale at Lowes for $10, usually $20-$25. You can hang your bikes from the ceiling or from Gladiator track.

The claw is cool, but if you have heavier bikes its gonna take a good heft no matter what you use. I wrote a review on Amazon FYI.
