BIG Problem, Pool table will only fit in my Garage!!

Hey gang,

I just bought a 3600 sq. foot home with a 23 x 23 garage.. I figured with all that sq footage, surely my pool table would fit... NOPE!!! I measured today and based off the charts online, I need a 13 foot 1 inch wide room at least.

In the entire house, only a couple rooms would fit the bill... None of them possible though. My original plan was to put it in the office over my garage, but it is only 11'7" so too narrow.

So that leaves me with two choices... Sell my grandfather's pool table, or put it in the garage....

However, my garage is to be a working garage..
1 bay to park a car and the other for my tools. Of the big tools, there is a full sized lather, table saw, band saw, two drill presses, air compressor, and I am planning to build either a 4'x4' or 4'x8' CNC Router.

So my thinking is... I COULD possibly put all the big tools along the walls, put the pool table in the middle of the second bay and make the CNC so I can roll it out of the way...

But I don't honestly know if I want my pool table in my garage.. Especially since I plan to do a LOT of CNC woodworking...

What would you guys do?

I plan to expand the garage, but that is a few years off.

HELP!!!!! :)

A layout of the garage, rooms in question, and a picture or two might help some of us come up with some creative ideas for you. I wouldn't sell the table though, there has to be a way to make it work.

I don't have any of the inside of the garage.. But ... The Garage floor is 23'2 wide and 23'4 deep, that does NOT include the bathroom, utility closet under the stairs and stairway landing area. The left side wall as you can see int he pics above, connects to the house.
The right side is where my tools and all will be.

The upstairs room over the garage.. It will take pretty much the entire room. Leaving enough for my desk and gun safe. And walking around it.. Will be a bit cramped.. It would only leave a couple feet of free space.

I've wanted a pool table for many years, never had a room large enough to give over to one. Most houses don't have a spare room large enough. I'd put the table in the upstairs office and draw up plans to kick out one wall and expand it.

Maybe make a nice countertop that will fit on the pool table and use it for a workbench? Don't use it for hammering, etc., but for finish work. Then just remove it to play pool.

Or put it upstairs, and switch to 42" cues. Also, some of those slate tables can be heavy, Some are over 1000 lbs.. Make sure the floor will support the additional weight.

The table has a LOT of sentimental value, so I really don't want to lose it.
As for kicking out one wall... It is not that simple :)

If you notice the roof design of the garage and the inside walls.... I am already into the ceiling trusses. I DO plan to expand the garage, but given all the money I am spending to buy and outfit the house.. It will be at least 2-3 years before I can even THINK about having a slab poured.

I need to go back to the house again, tape out the table on the floor of the office and walk around a bit... But from my initial measurement, even with midget sticks, shots from the sides will be like that Seinfeld episode.....

growing up we had a pool table in a room that was too small. I'd guess maybe 36" from the edge to the walls? How wide is the table and how much room would it leave if you put it in the room in the first photo?

We just had a shorty stick that we used on occasion. And it was actually very rare that you needed it because most of the time the cue ball was either more toward the center of the table or your shot was at an angle.

The table is I believe 58" wide. The room is 138" or so wide.. So 40ish inches on a side... But also the walls are angled, so if you had to put english on, you couldn't.. That is part of my fear...

Hmmm.. Maybe I need to drive back to the house and look again...

Ya have to fight for your space. I'd put it in the middle of the living room and negotiate from there. It's just for a little while honey:D A garage is a poor place for a good table. With the temp and humidity changes it wreaks havoc on the equipment. As well, given that you just bought this place, I suspect you have to many things to do to tie up your garage/work area. Nice house, btw!

I made a nice top for mine out of left over hardwood flooring and used it as a dining table when I wasn't playing pool. Killed two birds with one stone.

Of course I just moved in with my girl and had to leave it behind. Oh well, next place will have room for a Diamond table.

+1 exactly what I was going to reply with! We had the exact same scenario growing up.

Put it in the room above the garage and get a couple more cues and shorten them if need be.
No way I would get rid of grandpas pool table unless I hated pool

IMHO, Do not put it in the garage. Woodworking = sawdust, which in turn means cleaning that table off after each project.

Ok guys, we went back and laid out tape and tried playing invisible pool. It works ok!!

Here is the tape out and room left.

For the record, my wife would let me put it anywhere I want. She is awesome. (and sittin right beside me) ;)

It will be a tight fit, with no room for the pinball table yet.... But all in good time. :)

Id use that thing for fire wood before placing it in the garage. Make do with the slightly smaller room. Just cut a stick up smaller for those "Akward" shots.

Is that a knee wall I see? Could you cut out the knee wall around the area that the table is in? Might give you a few extra feet of space at the right height to be able to play.

I actually did consider that. Another section of the office actually has an alcove cut into the wall, where the wall is cut back to the rafter. But I don't care for the look. However, if in the process of playing pool I keep smacking the wall... I may just do it for the time being.

I understand that. I tried to convince my girl that we didn't really need a living room and a pool room would be better suited to our needs. Didn't work. Of course I want a $8k table too so that probably didn't help.

Good luck with it and be sure to post some pics with it all in there.

Thanks :) Fortunately, my wife is very giving. We were originally going to put it in the living room... The long room in the 6th and 7th pictures. But it is only 3 inches wider than my office... And my office.. is MINE. So I can do anything I want.

It would fit in the Great room.. The one with the vaulted ceiling.. But we both have more intimate plans for that room... Fire place, sectional, tv.

It would also fit in the Master Bedroom... And if we had more than 2 bedrooms.. That is where it would go. But...... My office it is.

I have my grandfather's pool table as well. I use it where it is a little close to one wall with a short stick. I am not a big pool player, but would never part with it. I would never put it IN the garage either, but the room above it looks perfect. That's where I'd go.

Not ofr nothing but since you said Grandfathers table I am thinking this is the real deal with slate? is it a full size or smaller bar size? I worked at a swiming pool company that also sold pool tables and one thing no one ever thought about was weight. If it is going over the garage make sure it does not end up in the garage!

Easier: keep a drill with a 2" spade bit handy, and just drill a hole in any wall that's in the way of the cue. :D

This^ I would seriously check the weight, and make sure the floor can support it. Wouldn't want your grandpas pool table on top of your nice new car, and under that big hole in your ceiling would you?

growing up we had an old pool table in a room that was a little too small. We used to joke around about building a giant turntable that the pool table could sit on. Then you would just have to spin the table when you needed to get at those shots from the edge.

I wonder how difficult it would be to build, and keep the table level?

Yes it is a full slate table. The thought of the floor has crossed my mind, but it feels very solid. The table is a modern slate pool table. About 6 years old. However I am pretty confident it will support it. Although I may want to have someone double check it. The garage ceiling is sheetrocked and the office floor obviously is carpeted. So I can't just peek at the floor joists.

I called the company it came from. They said it is 750 pounds and the way the weight is distributed it is no worse than four grown men. Well I had 6 in the office the othe day, so no worries.

i'm trying to add my pics as i'm in the same boat with a very similar garage. I have my grandpas old table , at least 40 yrs old, 1 inch 1 piece slate. I have it above my garage which looks just like yours. My floor upper garage floor has a poured slab of concrete w/ infloor heat so I'm not real worried about the added weight. The room is 12' wide w/ 45" on one side of the table and 49" on the other as it sits now, like I said i'm trying to load the pics.

Silver, It looks like your table is just a hair smaller than mine.. And your room is about 4 or 5 inches wider than mine.. But very cool :) Our offices are pretty dern close! Matter of fact, I am hoping to have time to replace my carpet with one similar to yours before I move in.

Wingnut65,
Bumper pool is for kids.. with no aim :D
