Another shop dropped this off to be surfaced it had a finish but the finisher had sanded too much making obvious depressions in the top.

Surfaced it on the CNC with a 11/2 bit. I taper ground the outer edges of the bit, it really cuts down on stepover lines the grind is very small less than a 64th or so over a half inch of the cutter.

The finish was satin varithane water base floor finish applied with a HVLP gun. Wet sanded with 1200,1500 and compound buffed.

I am not making the base just had to surface and finish it.

That is a beautiful piece of BIG wood!

I don't know much about wood so I have to ask this- How likely is a big slab like that to warp or split?

Man that is really nice, will keep my eye on this thread.

I've posted this on the wood working thread but here's a slab table my SIL built. He also tig welded the base.

Also would like to know how you did it on the cnc. Was it done in sections? And what was needed after to clean up the slab? Just sanding?

That is sweet. I've used automotive urethane clear on wood before, wet sanding after a couple coats and replying. But, once you hit it with a buffer you lose that "wet look." The ultimate gloss is wet sanding smooth, and giving it just one more coat. Clear will lay dead flat and achieve the ultimate gloss. The only problem is it's almost impossible to not get nibs from air borne particles.

kbs2244 my machine can surface 52 inches wide and 100 inches long or a little bigger than a full sheet of plywood. I have done pieces longer than the table by making zero index points mainly for big signs.

malibu101 The wood was kiln dried and has unistrut lagged on the bottom unistrut lets the wood move with the oval holes.

Slednut thats a nice piece.

Kaizen My CNC table is big enough to machine the whole top the bit I use cuts very clean so its easy to finish sand.

NUTTSGT the widest part is 42 inches and its is about 7' 4"

Miss the Pontiacs It is a relatively soft wood it will get dents from use.

This is our dining table made from spalted tulip poplar I cut down in the yard a few years ago I was going to mill it for shelves in the shop until I saw the spalting in it
