I guess expensive is a relative concept; based upon what you can afford! How about a 2" combination wrench for $242.00? http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...9&group_ID=521&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog
I'm sure you could find them used cheaper, tho!

Elora, as long as you can get them at a decent price, are perfect. The ends are broached to such tight tolerances, i've never rounded even a rusty bolt with the open end. They're very good wrenches. All-round (value for money included) i think they're better than Snap-on. You really can't beat their quality or value for money for their price.

I have Bonney/Matco wrenches up to 1 1/2". I got them for almost 70% off retail and they weren't even used. I couldn't turn them down. The bigger ones than that don't even have a name on them. I'm sure they're Asian, but I only use them for holding the back side of whatever I have a socket on or getting in somewhere a socket won't fit. Oh, I actually do or did have a raised panel Craftsman in 1 5/16". I don't need fancy for those jobs.

We had a few old Gedore wrenches at the shop where I used to work in the wrench rack. They were made in India and they were rough. They looked pretty old, and were far from high quality. We had racks with about 5-10 of each size wrench in old or junk brands for taking into the field or sending the Mexicans out to work with. I had some Elora tools of some sort, but I can't recall offhand what they were.

Funny, the Eloras i have run across at pawn shops, were made in India, too! I wonder why all these wrenches over here were not made in Germany?

I only buy the large wrenches when needed. So far I have no need for most large wrenches just a couple.

Big mistake waiting, buy the good brands like Proto and Armstrong etc.. dirt cheap ie 10-15 $ per each as you encounter them used instead of waiting and paying for one new what you could have bought a half dozen or more used for........................yup, big mistake! :wtf:

I'll agree with that. I'm working on filling out my collection to at least 1 1/4", after an emergency run to Tractor Supply to get one the other night. Picked up a Snap-On 1 1/16" used on Ebay for the same price ($15) as a Masterhand 1 1/4".

Also working on some bigger sockets, too.

80mm:spit: Hydraulic guys were using a 150mm socket on a cylinder today. Also found out that our hydraulic bench, the one I mentioned previously and is photo'd here (http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20537), the torque multiplier used for removing those large nuts off the rods has a max torque of 80,000 ft. lbs. Guess the guys have had to use it up to about 40,000ft lbs.
