Ziggy: i've never heard or seen of those so thanks for sharing. also the nickel standing on end with it running is a nice touch.
i think McB was doing something with washers on the side of a wheel about a year ago to balance one of his wheels and maybe he gave up on that idea because we were worried it might fly off and hurt or kill him.
yours seems to have all safety factors covered.
now i guess all you have to do is get the exterior paint out and paint the plywood and your done.

I think a nice sheet of HDPE with rounded edges would look great as a base.
More thoughts on rubber:
I had asked a question on the main block grinder thread about whether the big boys with deluxe bases utilized bushing between the grinder and the base. Some seem to use them, others not. Mine had short #10-32 screws that would not have had room for the intermediate bushings. But when I installed it that way there was some resonant noise, so I got longer screws and put them through the bushings. This is great because the grinder is isolated in both up and down, and side-to-side directions.
I need to backpedal here a bit. I still think using the screw-through-bushing method above is handy if you have a grinder with imbalance issues since it adds extra damping and further isolates the grinder from its mounting.
However, if the grinder is pretty well balanced I'm finding it is better to just screw it down directly to the base. I did not detect any increase in vibration without the intermediate bushings. I do suggest getting longer #10-32 screws -- I found 3/4" long with wide washers worked well and utilized most of the thread depth in the deluxe base.
Why is this better? First, now the tool rests and the grinder are one solid unit, so they don't have any relative motion (ie, the "give" of the intermediate bushings allowing you to force the tool rest into the stone). Second, it allows the grinder itself to sit lower down on the base so you can get more height adjustment out of the tool rests. This helped my Stanley tool rests fit better. Third, it's easier to install and uninstall than putting the screws through the bushings.

Nope, I actually posted about that a while back with regard to my 3/4HP block. The original screws are nice because you can loosen a bit and then rotate the cover off, but they have a very small bearing area and gouge the aluminum covers, especially if your covers are warped and have to get smashed down into the place by the screws (like mine!) Flange nuts are easier on the covers.
This time I used #8-32, 1" long SS set screws. Much easier to install with a hex wrench than using two jam nuts to drive in a basic stud. Hate that ****!

McB: looks like the flying washers won't be a danger any more. once you found out they could fly off i'm guessing you took the washers off the wheels or did you just secure them better.

Ziggy: I really did like your aluminum base and just wanted to hear your thinking. since I like bare or naked aluminum or any steel for that matter I was just curious why you painted it. you did an AMAZING JOB as per usual and even tapped holes for the bolts holding the Block to the plate. sorry my HUMOR didn't land as intended, but we were talking about Carbon and Space age materials and your paint job doesn't show a flaw so almost looked like it was done at a factory.

The side facing front had a saw texture and the other surfaces are as extruded. Looked more uniform painted. Also wanted to try out another color to see if it would suit my next block rebuild project

I guess I wasn't quite done.
I was never too happy with the paint on the center band. I originally used Rustoleum Metallic Silver. It looked pretty good, but the paint can't be clearcoated according to Rustoleum's directions and I found that it smudged and dinged very easily. Another member had suggested Rustoleum Satin Nickel so I decided to give it a try on the old center band I had sitting around.

Maybe I'm just nit-picking, but I think it looks better. My artist-in-residence told me that the new color makes it look more like a muscle car, so that's good enough for me

Ziggy: you've done another nice improvement and happy to hear your critic is supportive and not telling you to just turn it on and use it. it looks great and not trying to get you to spend more money, but I'd like to see it with the older block's metal framed eye shields if you can find a donor.
anybody know if the old metal eye shields fit on the slightly newer blocks that just have the frameless one?

JZ: i'm not sure Doc's guards came with his block or any block that size, but he'll be able to say. I can say that other old grinders have those COOL metal framed guards so keep you eyes open for some on a STANLEY, DAYTON and heck I've got a pair of lighted Baldor guards waiting to go on a 1/2 HP Baldor i'm going to spiff up if you can find a pair of those and make them fit. or maybe one of those huge 3 phase grinders that you might run across might have a nice pair.

I've seen them on eBay - $$!
The one's above were 'donated' from a little brother.
BTW - Drive's wanted to know if the metal framed eye shields will fit on the newer grinders that came with the plastic eye shields.
So far I've fitted the larger metal shields to the Maroon/Cream Block above, and the smaller metal shields also fit.
I will predict, both small and large metal eye shields will fit the flat top Blocks that came with the plastic eye shields.

Drives - I spotted a pair of the lighted Baldor eye shields on a non-Baldor grinder listed on CL.
That little grinder, Diehl, is one heavy puppy! I went to pick it up and thought it was still bolted to the stand.
Anyway, I went after the lights, but it turns out the grinder is cool too!
Now I just have to get some eye shields fot it!
It never ends!

DOC: you'll probably find some glass before I get ORGANIZED, but I know I can fill up a USPS flat rate box with some glass, plexi, and grinder parts to ship you. did you have a chance to see my new ORGANIZING 101 thread in garage gallery? I put the link in my sig line for you and all the block heads and other members.
I'm also asking the members to share their ORGANIZING pictures in any stage of before, during and after so post up a few pictures there if you have time and want to. or just poke your head in and watch me clean up my mess and life.
