"Big Ziggy" 1HP Craftsman Block Grinder Build

JZ: if I ever GET ORGANIZED you might be surprised what I have. I think I have a grinder with those art deco eye shields on it, but at this point I don't have a clue where it is.

maybe you can get on my ORGANIZING 101 thread and help me GET ORGANIZED and a USPS box from DRIVESITFAR might be in your future. not that you need it because the 1HP looks pretty nice, but just saying if it had metal eye shields or baldor lighted shields it might go really over the top.

Love the build, especially the label. I'm working on the home made version of a Craftsman Crown label because I don't think companies like you used will cut out the little crown part. I'm going to try the apps you mentioned, but I'm not very computer literate. Keep up the good work.

ZEE: check out the Craftsman block grinder thread and I think Pup makes these labels for pretty reasonable pricing that look fantastic. JZ might have bought his label from him. I think Pup (his GJ name is longer) actually made a thread about the labels he's making that you can post on or PM him and ask questions.

JZ: you're 1HP is still in the top 5 of my favorite grinders. hard to top the Blockmeister and GO BLUE, but you've made a terrific effort. I sent you a couple emails.

Not quite finished yet, and definitely not perfect, but it's going to be ok if I can get a sticker or decal for it.

I made my label directly through BayPhoto.com.

Cool idea cutting out the crown logo. That would be sweet.

Zeeman: The majority of the badges I've done are rectangular, however I recently done a few odd-ball shapes ones. A couple of Rockwell grinder ones and two oval shaped Delta versions. Both were shaped on my router table using a trim bit with a top bearing riding an acrylic template guide of the shape.

I have a similar Craftsman style badge like yours to do, however the larger version of it for an Atlas rebadged Craftsman 12x36 metal lathe. I'm going to use the same technique using an acrylic template guide however I would have to hand file the grooves in the crown because the smallest router trim bit I have is 1/4" diameter.

It turned out OK, so I know I could do better if I took my time and actually measured things. I used a small file to round some of the edges, etc. I did not mean to sell you short on your abilities. You produce some great work. I'm impressed.

No, no you didn't sell me short. Yours was one of the threads and showing off your great badge that got me started on the reproduction badges. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

A little late, but earlier in your thread you installed the rubber edging to cut down on vibration. Excellent idea and I'll be making a note of it. Thanks again, David.

Hey guys,

It was tons of fun building this grinder and it's a pleasure to use, plus it just looks great in the shop. The trouble is, it's simply too much grinder for my daily needs. I love overkill solutions (see my avatar) but it turns out this was a little too far. Most of my projects require more fine detail than heavy material removal.

I really hesitate to put it up for sale but I would rather it be used and loved. I have a lot of time and resources invested in getting this thing perfect. If anyone is interested in something like this please let me know...

Ziggy: post up a few more pictures of it as of today cause as i recall there was some space age materials going on or under it on your last posts. i'm a fan of the round tops so sorry i won't be interested, but you did an AMAZING JOB on spiffing this one up and i bet it will be a showpiece in somebody's shop if you can't figure out a way to use it in yours.

Hey Drives, I still have it. I don't intend to make a FS ad, but I'll continue to use it and enjoy looking at it while I wait for "Mr. Right" to ask to buy it

Mini update for Big Ziggy. He get used fairly often but is getting jealous of the belt sander that usually gets more attention. As Big Zig is now a two year old he decided to "act out" by refusing to turn off when his switch is flipped to the off positon.

A quick teardown showed dirty contacts points and the motions of the copper strips that rock back and forth was gummy. Everything got scoured back to a nice luster, blasted with DeOxit, and the sliding portion got a very thin layer of silicone grease. Now it all works fine again!

Actually, I've had mine for about five years now and still use it regularly. Although, the side disc seems to get used more than the belt. But, the belt can't be beat when it is needed.
