ALL: to date the big RR 695 pound Pittsburgh vise has not been found, but recently a smaller version with 5 inch wide jaws was so the search continues. also VA has a salesman's sample that weighs about a pound he should post here along with his other monsters he's yet to post.

cheers

I put a bench on wheels. It was too high for me and the 8" Snap-On/ Wilton vise was useless because it was too high and because the bench moved even with locking wheels, you could not crank down on anything in the vise. I cut the wheels off and bolted the bench to the floor and wall. Now The vise is at perfect height (elbow test) and I can crank down on stuff in the vise.

It's nowhere near the biggest, or even close to many of the vises in this thread, but it's still an 8" American Scale model 58 that I weighed at 237lbs.

There were also a couple of old articles on the 695 pounder, that mentioned it being a powered vise, (so more reason for them to all be long gone - more to go wrong...) and that some had been shipped, and some across the pond to Europe.

Guys,

I've come across of what appears to be an old railroad vise. I didn't have a chance/time to check it out fully as I passed it on my way to the offices and didn't leave the building through the same doors I entered. Now I've been trying to find a similar looking vise online but couldn't. I suspect it's a prewar vise and it was in really good condition from what I could remember.

I'm considering going back and offering some money for it to take it home. The jaws weren't very big - in range of 7-8" - but it was pretty long - at least 24".

What would be one of those worth these days? The boys at the factory joked they used a forklift to move it in and haven't found a bench big enough to mount it. It sits in the corner but is a gorgeous piece of engineering so I'm thinking of making them an offer they can't refuse! LOL

When you're talking bench vises, anything over 7" is big and 9" is the largest size you normally hear about.

In good condition, meaning no damage/welds/etc, there's probably no way to go wrong if you stay under $750 or so. Even an unmarked (no manufacturer listed) 7" vise in good shape should be worth that much, and several have sold like that recently for more money.

yes this thread is old, but my last post about Reed 406 was 10-29-2010. so info about my new C3 had the best fit in this thread.

here's Wilton C1 sitting on C3 for size comp

Very nice! Where did you find it?

Bought it off EBay.---Just happen to pull up EBay and went scanning 5 minutes before the sale ended.---Never had seen one but had heard of them thanks to
this thread and Demoman and his post.---I thought , well it's not 695 lbs. but it looks similar, so I went for it.

I made a pile of vises to show how huge a C3 is compared with most "normal" vises...had someone send me a note saying they definitely needed a 6" Wilton as anything else would be too small.

450SJ, C2, C3 with a 9300 on the C2 and 350 on the C3. I added the 450S and 9400 on the bottom just for grins.

The fact that the C3 dwarfs the 100lb C2 says a lot and the 450SJ that weighs about 70lbs looks tiny!

Until you see the 6" and larger vises in person it's really hard to know just how big they are.

That’s a 232 lbs anvil in its jaws. For sale on eBay for $5800 plus shipping ($500 to most of the USA) from Austria. That’s actually rather reasonable. 500+ lbs. Looks like the big green one above in post #71. And yeah, it’s not a “bench” vise. Don’t think most will care.

Hmmm, That is def a monster of a vice but it kinda looks like a one off show piece. It reminds me of a time a few years ago I walked into a machinist tooling shop in tacoma and they had a norton grinding wheel on display, it was 7'x1'x1'. That's 7 ft diameter, 1 foot thick, 1 foot arbor. I am interested to hear the story also, i don't think I've heard of millscott.

The Millscott 13 is on display at a local business here in Fairbanks.
Yes, I would like to sell it and see it go to a good home.
Thanks for the good words Shift.

Very simple to “transport“ Millscott to potential buyers. Just insert the Earth into its jaws, squeeze (lightly!), space-time warps, and voilá, the potential suitor pops in (rather discombobulated, naked, face-down on the floor). This method also softens the target and makes the closing easier (but don’t forget to transport the fellow’s wallet).
