Bit sockets without the bit sockets

I'm on a mission to not purchase dedicated bit sockets. They're expensive, and when they break they're useless and it seems a shame to throw the whole thing away for a broken tip. So I've got insert bit sockets that work great for smaller torx, hex, and screwdriver bits...but larger things like the larger torx, or allen have eluded me...until now.

Check this out: http://www.bondhus.com/bondhus_products/tool_categories/socket_bits/index.html

And they're IMPACT RATED! "Bits are suitable for use with standard or impact sockets."

The whole set of 4-17mm is $35 on amazon. What do you guys think about these? bondhus has a good reputation, so I'm considering getting some of these for when I need such a thing

I have them, and they work great, as long as you can actually get them into a socket. The little plastic nubs on the sides make it extremely difficult to insert and remove them from sockets by hand.

If I were to reconsider my purchase, I'd get the set with sockets included.

Sounds like you need sockets of whatever drive size you want, and epoxy. Cut-off L-wrenches work fine for this, too.

APEX has those too. Their sockets use a set screw to retain the bit; makes changing out bits real easy.

I have some Craftsman units that the bits can be replaced (held in with a metal split ring that's slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the bit). Can be replaced by hand fairly easily too.

L wrenches and the apex bits aren't impact rated that I'm aware of ;)

I know that you wouldn't want to go crazy with the impact, but might aid removal of a stubborn plug that's been in place for a while, and hopefully prevent it from stripping

I guess I don't understand the question any more... Bondhus makes fine stuff, so get the bits. And get some impact sockets to stick them in. Voilà! "Impact rated" and everything.

Alternatively, I would say that if you're super worried about the whole impact thing, buck up and get some impact hex bits.

Don't really know what the impasse is here. I have a drawer full of homemade hex bits, from 1.5 to 19, make from bits and L-wrenches, Bondhus, Wera, and China, and all does its job just fine.

no impasse, I was just commenting that the bondhus stuff IS impact rated, so that's a plus over home made potentially. I'd actually be interested in hearing about and seeing what you're doing and using for the home made stuff you're referring to, especially if you don't have to sacrifice a socket to make it work. That's the other thing I was saying, the ones I was looking at fit existing sockets and you don't have to epoxy them in so they still function as sockets. stores smaller than dedicated hex, torx, etc sockets
