I'm curious to see how much this one will go for.

That's a cool looking box. It kind of reminds me of the Oscar Meyer hot-dog truck!

I do not understand why someone is a schmuck for wanting a very very rare Black Hawk Tool Kit. It is missing a tee handle and a few other bits, however it has most of the stock. it is 7/16 BLACK HAWK only.
I know a member here who has two of these. I have got to play with the sets:)

I just don't know how rare they are. They pop up on eBay a few times a year, maybe more. I would say they are uncommon, certainly.

Now, hens' teeth, they are rare! :lol_hitti

This set has a 1/2 and a 3/8 adapter, so technically you wouldn't be restricted to just the 7/16 BLACKHAWK only drive set.

I have a 49K set, and I don't really know all of the pieces that are supposed to be in it or this 30k set, but doesn't the slider bar attachment serve as the tee handle in this set?

HOLY CRUST! Late late last night, it was around $400. Now, it has jumped up to $660, with three days to go! :shocking:

Who are these Blackhawk collectors? I mean, I love the brand and collect lots of their stuff, but I am in a different category than the people bidding on this torpedo.

This one is certainly out of my realm as a novice tool collector.
Perhaps the appeal of these tool sets go beyond everyday tool collectors due to the stylish design element of the box.

They certainly seem to have gone up in value since 2002:

I love the style of those sets but would never consider paying that kind of money for one. :wtf:

If you are at all price-sensitive, it never pays to bid early in an auction; sniping will always result in a lower price.

I am a bit taken by the fact that members here who probably have spent more than a few hundred dollars on tools in their lifetimes would criticize someone else for doing so for one particular item i.e. Blackhawk Nugget Tool Set.

Currently there are a few Stanley No 1 Planes on the bay right now. One with a few days to go and already over $600.00. Some years back those planes commonly went for well over a thousand and this is only one item. I don't see anyone here bashing these people for spending money on their passion.

Another fact is that these Stanley No 1 Planes are much more common on ebay than these Blackhawk Sets are by far so why shouldn't they find their own price level? I personally wouldn't pay this kind of money for one of these sets but then I have spent far more money on items that I foolishly thought I needed at one time.

I'm not trying to be critical here only making an observation about the relative value of items which varies according who is wanting it at the time it is being offered for sale.

Overall, I don't see much bashing in this thread. Were there one or two remarks that might be construed that way? For my part, it's merely a matter of surprise, and questioning who these Blackhawk collectors are.

Yeah, not that I feel oldjacks was referring to me, but for the record, I would dearly love that Blackhawk set, but cannot justify paying what the current auction is fetching even now (and it might very well close higher). I have no problem with such a collector market existing for such cool pieces though; if people have the cash & want the item, the market will establish itself whether I approve or not!

No, I will simply have to wait until I stumble on a deal like CRTDI did and ****** a minty set for $200. I would have paid $200 for his set in a heartbeat (especially knowing I could make money on the deal if I ever tired of owning such a set)...

But also for the record, I've never understood the vintage plane market. Some models can sell for tens of thousands of dollars - maybe more...

Like I say it is all relative as I have been collecting Blackhawk Tools for over 20 years now. I don't think Blackhawk has received the recognition it deserves although I feel that it is becoming a more collectible than it once was. I see tool collecting especially automotive tools as a relatively new hobby that has not found a place of notoriety as let's say Stanley Planes have.

I once talked to a ********* tool collector who had published a book of tool values and mentioned Plomb Tools to him and his response was who collects that junk?

That being said and the number of members here on the GJ I think that in the coming years we are going to see certain tools become quite valuable. It would not surprise me let's say in 10 years to see these Blackhawk Nugget Sets going for closer to $1000.00 and that is no joke.

I think most would agree that the cycles come and go. Or, at least they always have in the past, I even read that in a tool collecting book, so it must be true. I agree in a way with oldjacks that some of our favorites just haven't had their day yet, but undoubtedly will.
Also, oldjacks, Where can I get me some shoes like that?? SWEET

oldjacks,

Would you happen to have a catalog or an old advertisement that lists which tools belong in a 30k and 49k set? I am also wondering about the different decals under the lid of the box as mine has a different style than the one listed here, which also has two from some crazy reason. :headscrat
Did the decal style change with different years or different sets?

I noticed your box has what appears to be a different latch. Would you happen to know if the latch design changed with later production units?

I believe I have an understanding of the date codes for some of the Blackhawk tools. Is there any way to find the production date on a box?

Sorry for so many questions, I'm still very ignorant about these tools.

Those are Victorian Shoes and nothing like them has ever been made since the 1900's.

I previously owned Blackhawk Tool Catalogs but have since sold them on ebay. In a way it is hard to research Blackhawk Tools as they hard to find in quantities sufficient enough to draw conclusions. As far as the boxes are concerned you are right the box I have pictured in an older post of mine is an earlier one with a different latch on it.

This latch is a friction type and it is not hard to deduce why they stopped making that style as if you don't have it completely seated it will slip and spill all your tools out on the ground.

Both of my boxes are rather beat-up and missing decals and markings. I have never noted any serial #'s on any of my boxes and cannot speak with authority on that issue.

Lastly if I remember from the catalogs most sets supplied with boxes were rather basic which encouraged one to spend money at a later time to fill in with other specialized accessories like speeder ratchets, t-handle speeders and two position handle ratchets. I probably could have answered your question more completely if I still owned my old catalogs.

Yeah, I checked the local Payless, nuthin'. Some of the Beatle boots in the 60s were getting pretty close. Sorry, I just love the fact that Garage Journal will show up in a search of Victorian Shoes and Beatle Boots. Great!
Anyway ...
The box and tools went for $760. Let's hope it gets to it's new home safely.
Congrats buyer!

I just acquired what appears to be a 30K set certainly in above average condition. Prolly missing the slide bar, but the 7/16" swivel is there. IF you've never spun one of these Freewheeling ratchets, you are in for a treat. I picked up one along with 4 of the matching 7/16" drive sockets at a house sale last year, but could not find the box.

This was an acquisition that was 4 years in the making and I am very thankful to the owner's widow for allowing me to purchase it from her.

That is a very cool set. I started with finding a Blackhawk S-4 Aluminum body jack, then was on a mission to locate a SJ-18, with my father laws help, I just acquired that one. The "Nugget" tool box and tools, is my next mission. For you to get the box loaded with tools, what huge score. If anyone has one for sale or knows of someone with one let me know.
thanks!
(BTW if someone has an extra slotted screw for the handle, 1 was missing when I got it)
