Today was prep day for final assembly. I did the little things like reassemble the rear wheels and castors, final paint on the handle, so on.

I have left a few pics below of the raw parts awaiting grease and assembly. We're almost done!

Hey Horse -

Beautiful resto! I'm about to embark on the refurb of my S4 (which is not as nice as yours - especially the casters). What paints are you using?

The stars have aligned somehow and I found a few spare hours to assemble the jack today. I have a few pictures of the assembly process along with a pic of some vintage Snap-On tools along for the job.

Notlob, I am using Rustoleum 7762 Sunrise red, Rustoleum gloss white and Curtisol specialty enamel steel platinum.

Enjoy the pics.

Hell of a job Horse! If I didn't have 20 other things torn apart in my shop, this would make me get started on mine!

It's probably no surprise to the folks here but the big box stores are pretty worthless when it comes to stocking hardware.

I'm having a problem finding the slotted oval head machine screw that I am missing. It's 5/16ths coarse thread and I have attached a picture just to show you what I'm talking about.

Does anyone have one of these screws? I would love to have an original but at this point, replacing the missing one and the one I have with two new ones is also ok.

Thanks.

I have it at home but there is an antique auto hardware place in So Cal. I think. When I get home I will pm you.

New to the site

Horse13, I'm restoring an S4 model and found those screws in the stainless steel section of Lowes. Wrong length but I used a dremel and they worked. Replaced all four.

That is fantastic news. There is a lowes about 25 minutes from my home. I will be visiting them for sure.

Do you happen to have the SKU# or did you just grab oval pan head 5/16ths coarse thread hardware?

Thanks!

I grabbed a 5/16 Oval Head screw but they were to long, therefore I cut them to size. I think I have the card board cover in the screw bin at home. When I get home tonight I check and give you the SKU. Only difference is they are a not slotted but Philip type head.

How bad are the two originals that you have? I can usually clean up original hardware. Any interest in parting with them if they are in good/reasonable shape?

Horse 13, I apologize for the tardiness, but here are the pictures of the old 5/16 flat head bolts, packaging of the 5/16 x 1" SS Phillip pan head bolt as well as my project. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but as far as the bolts you can have them.

Your restoration looks fantastic. I don't consider your input as thread jacking, rather, a compliment to the S4 line of BlackHawk jacks.

I sent you a PM to claim the pan head screws. Thank you again for your generosity.

Horse 13, the bolts are on there way in a white bubble wrap package. Should arrive by the weekend.

Take care

NCGI,

The OEM screws arrived today. I wasted no time prepping and painting the hardware. Thanks to you, every last screw is 100% complete.

Thank you again. I appreciate your pay-it-forward gesture.

Horse 13, glad to help, I did not want to become the Keeper of Vintage Nuts and Bolts. Your floorjack looks great, I painted mine black because all my cabinets are from a laboratory in a school made of oak. I painted them red and my Snap-On KD7100 is red therefore I did not want anymore red. Also if anyone is interested there is a Blackhawk jack for $75.00 in Charlotte, NC on Craigslist. I thought about it but I don't need another jack and it has a broken handle.

Well nuts. I have an old 2-ton Blackhawk in my garage for over 20 years. It has four fixed mount wheels, no casters at the back. It has the reservoir as part of the frame. This gets me thinking I need to restore it. I do recall it does not lift when pumping the handle, so a problem either with the seals or the pump rod. A friend of mine can machine whatever I need for the pump rod.

The one I have looks like this. Any idea of the model or its age?

That is a sweet find! I have a fair selection of parts for this jack if you need anything. The proper name for the screws you are looking for is slotted oval head machine screw. It is a little different than a pan head screw. It will have the slotted rounded head & the tapered underside. It takes a cone shaped lock washer called a Countersunk External Tooth Lock Washer. If you have a nut & bolt supplier in your neck of the woods, he may be able to get what you want with those descriptions & your sizes. If you don't have any luck there, let me know. I'll do some rootin' & see what I can find. Happy jackin'!
Diesel Jim, do you have any rear caster wheel and bearing assemblies? I have owned mine since 1974 when I bought it to remove VW air cooled engines. I was 17 years old then. Do you have access to any of those casters as well as a light cover? Thank's Tommy Milligan Jr.

@thehorse13 is this an S4? The bolt pattern looks a little different and I don’t see the lamp cover on mine. I picked it up today for $90 1FF6597F-DEA5-47A8-B892-06821A75D3AC.jpeg

Yep. That is indeed an S4. Some have the headlight and key lock in the handle, which is the deluxe model. Yours is the standard model just like mine. Your jack is older than mine so it does have several small differences like the knob on the handle, etc.

Okay sweet. Mine does have a lock on the knob. Is that a single option that was added on or does that mean this might be a deluxe model with a missing lamp plate?

In a message I saw that @Hiball wrote, he said they made a 6 ton with no light. So I wonder if this is that model.
I think it’s an early S4, It’s also Missing the cover plate.

The curved portion is light.

I know Blackhawk made a larger 6 ton model, but I don’t believe it had a light.

Actually, I should have allowed myself more time to wake up before responding. Now that I'm awake, I can see the bolt pattern differences between mine and yours. Have a look at the picture below. You seem to have the S-15 model which from what I have seen, does come with the lock but no light.

Sweet. I’m glad to hear that. That definitely looks like it. They will be a nice complement together once restored. Here’s the S4 I bought as. I paid $175 for the S4. Hopefully I didn’t overpay 581C23DC-0B93-4C31-9D2D-E7306FAADF17.jpeg
