Block Wall Dryer Vent

Is there such a thing as a core drill bit to drill a dryer vent in a block wall?

This would make the job so much more easy.

Had a guy come over and drill one of those through a poured concrete wall. He drilled a small hole and installed an insert for a bolt, then hung the drill from that and cranked in the drill.....something like a Cole drill. It went through the concrete like drilling butter. Left behind a round concrete core.

Found him through a local paper ad and it only cost $10........but that was 1973.

So, yes there are drills for that, talk to rental place for details.

Cement Block or Solid Concrete.

A 4" SDS MAX core bit will run your about 150'ish on average.

To have a guy come out with a a real coring machine, around here, $400-600 to make that 4" hole. YMMV. The coring machines/core bits are a different animal though. Less blowout, eats rebar, you name it.


I just made one with a SDS core bit.....in cement block and brick. It was a fairly clean hole....

You can rent a 4" core bit around here for about 50/day.... Assuming you have a sds drill. If not you'll need to rent that too... Or find a friend

Hammer drill and mason bits. Drill the diameter of the hole the knock it out with a hammer. Clean up the hole with a chisel. I did about 6yrs ago. I think it took me about an hour to do.

I rented a 4 inch drill from Home Depot.
I expected hollow block.
I got filled block.
Four hours for 2 holes instead of one.
I had to come in from both sides after I got far enough in for the lead drill to poke through.
If there is a next time, I am hireing it out.

Just curious. Was it SDS on a thinwall 4" Core bit
Or SDS Max
Was the bit teeth - carbides all on it.

Thats why I recommended a clutched type core drill bit. They are designed for hand use. One the bit is in the wall you aren't holding as much weight.

4 hours was total time.
I was on a step ladder.
The drill is pretty heavy.
And I was 67 at the time.
I took some breaks.

my dryer duct is about 8 1/2" long.....saves on gas
