Been planning a workshop for so long... really inspiring seeing your project come to life. I am starting construction on a 40x60x16 in June...

Since I know you did all the research already, wondering the final cost of the building - I have materials and labor on my 40x60 at about 25K - groundwork is around 6K - concrete (including driveway to the shop) is approaching 15K...

Looking into radiant heat for my setup. What did you end up having in your system and how expensive to run during the winter months?

I am guessing I am at about $65K.

Here are some numbers I remember
Shed $29K
Concrete and site prep $9K
closed cell ceiling spray $9K
Wall insulation $1K
$1K in 2X6s
$1.6K in 1600 32X48 sheets of plywood (sold some and paid for the romex and wall insulation)
$1K in Pex/manifold
$1K in used foam and plastic under concrete
$1.5K in my panel build, pumps, instant hot water boiler and glycol
$1.8K lights
$1K in romex and recepticals and boxes
$1K screws
$1K gutters
$500 in garage door upgrades
$600 openers
$500 paint

Sure there is more. This did not count things like fridge, dust collector and ductwork, or the theater setup.

Mike, who built your building? $29k sounds like a great price.

I got a quote for a 40x64x14 with 18” over hangs, an 8x30 porch and a 16x16 porch. $54k. I live north of Mattoon.

Edit: I see in OP you said a contractor from Indiana.

Mine was built 2014 by s&l builders. Omer contracted it to Michael Stolfas of WindyRidge construction. Price are higher now. A smaller shed was only $5k recently less so who knows. All you can do is call around. Mine is 40x64x16 with 12 overhangs and 12x24 porch, wainscotting, 2x6 wall girts, 2x8 at floor, fully wrapped in the foil double bubble stuff, 3 man doors, 4 large windows, and two 14x14 roll up garage doors.

Menards in Bloomington contractors desk did "not because they cant recommend" have a list of guys that contract out putting up a menards pole barn. That was my option #2. Maybe try a local menards. Also rp lumber here did them i believe. Fs farm town does them too. Id try all those. Your current qote is ridiculous !!

Coming along nicely Mike. Just a note to let you know I got my radiant floor up and running. Thanks for all the help along the way. I hope to stop by sometime this spring/summer to check out your shop while my daughter is at volleyball just up the road.

Best,

-Derek

Derek great job on the floor!! Its excellent as long as the building is well insulated.

Installed these lower 8'x28' diy slat wall wall panels today. Last weekend I made 52 panels. Elephant is getting smaller.

How are you holding the panels up by yourself? Did I forget if you mentioned that you're using a drywall jack? It's looking really nice.

So I came up with this crazy idea. It is a roller outfeed table for a saw from HTC. I made a table to sit on top that wrapped edges. Then I embedded some miter track level with a sub top on the table. In that track rides a right angle jig from Shop fox that also slides. I already owned the miter track and the right angle jig btw. I mounted the track so the jigs face would extend past the table when slid (typically this jig is used on a router table or table saw). I hold the panels to the jig with a kreg screw. It allows it to sit there stable while I did my wiring from behind. Then I could roll the entire table to the wall and extend the panel/jig beyond table so the edge of the panel was over top edge of previous sheet. The table is big so it counter balances and it makes a nice bench top up there. The sliding of the jig in the miter track made it easy to position the panel left or right. Then I could lower the lift and the panel would rest on the edge and the jig would lift out of miter track. Honestly - it was freaking brilliant and worked perfect. LOL not to brag but I still laugh at it. I mounted SOOO MANY of the panels 100% by myself at all heights.

Looking great Mike. Congrats on finishing the walls. That is work that will pay off in spades for years and projects to come.

-Derek

p.s.: I looking forward to seeing what tricks you come up with for the MaxLine. I have a kit waiting to be installed.

Not really anything magical to the maxline. Straighten and hang it. I use a conduit bender and the straighten mandrel. I already have it on my south wall and finished the runs last night on north wall.

Built an aftercooler for the north wall airline setup. It is 50' of 3/4" type M copper. Also built a slat-wall soldering protection shield to protect my walls while installing it..

Unique opportunity today. High tesion power poles are getting changed out next door. I let the crews use my access road. They are super happy with me. It was a slow clean up day. Talked to a gal who drives a big huge mountain size loader and she hooked me up with the boss. He had a track hoe guy help me move my mill into the new shed. After that five linemen the size of nfl linemen helped my Egyptian style roll it into place. Next tool to purchase, a real johnson bar like they have!!

They also cleaned out the back of my pond of willows and re terraced my back 4 acres with dirt. I bought the entire 25 man crew lunch. We get along great. Never underestimate the power of just being nice and buying folks a lunch. That pizza lunch saved me thousands of dollars in work today.

Crazy day!!

My dad is famous for those kind of deals. A case of beer to drop 3 LARGE boulders where my mom wanted them. Or drop off a load of ground concrete. Well down sir.

What size & brand are those fans. They look good, but I don’t see BigAss on them anywhere.

Those look like the minka aire xtreme 96 fans I have in my woodshop. I have two and they move the air nicely.... with four fans in reverse....Mike might be able hover above his floor with a flying squirrel suit on!

These are 72" Big Air 72ICF. $430ea from overstock shipped with tax. 96" is just slightly more - maybe $50 to $100ea more. I wanted above my trusses and lights (no shadows) and did not want to risk the clearance of the 96".

72" BAF is like $2800 ea.

Another person pointed out Lowes has a $299 72" DC fan as well that looks similar.

Latest update.

Installed mini blinds on doors and windows and got rid of insulation covering them.

Got the cnc mill's air and power run to ceiling and got it back up and running. Also got the 1340 metal lathe moved ove.

Roboreel is the brand reels. I bought demo units from their website. They were $100 ea. I like tjem for $100 but at $300 retail id get something else. They are not reelcraft or other industrial service station equiv but for a workshop like mine they are great. I do have other reels though with true 1/2" id hoses but these are great above my bench.

Thanks on the comment on the fans. It was great in there today even though it was 92 out. It was 78 in there but the fans made it very nice. I moved in my RF30 milldrill and my 1236 Atlas craftsman lathe today. Ill clean them up tomorrow.

Very nice.

I too like having my power and air lines dropped from above so no hoses or cords lying on the floor powering the machinery.

Great job on getting things set up.
