Bluetooth or WiFi window AC units

Guys I appreciate everyone’s help in getting my sons apartment set with AC in the windowless room. I spoke to an nyc AC guy and instead of piping a portable vent 25-30 feet and killing efficiency we plan on installing a second window AC and hooking up a duct to carry cold air into his room. That solves the drain issue as well. I could not find one portable ac company that said the vent could be run more than 60 inches without straining the unit into inefficienty and burning out the fan in no time.

So I’m now looking for a unit that has a remote or smart phone app that can be controlled preferablely by Bluetooth and if not WiFi.

Also links to ducts for This purpose or ideas would be appreciated. I’m having someone fab the duct. And I’d like it to be well conceived

Depending on btu of the one unit we may just split the air off into a duct and pie that in. Just need to see if it’s adequate.

60" seems horribly short. we had a portable AC in an IT closet at a remote site at work, and it went out the roof through 6" duct. ran for years until we ditched the site. Nothing fancy either, just a bargain brand portable AC.

For my thermostat controlled AC, I picked up a window unit with auto-restart after power outage, and wired up a contactor to control power to an outlet. thermostat turns outlet on/off as needed.

not sure how the window unit is supposed to push through 25' of duct either

Very excellent point. I suppose he will have to control it or it will operate based on the room it’s in. It’s a less than ideal situation but I’m doing the best I can figure out.

Was it a straight shot ? It’s the bends that really hurt in told. It’s the back pressure on the fan.

I'm no a/c expert but putting a t-stat in the bedroom and running the wire with the ductwork back to the unit in place of the unit's t-stat shouldn't be that big of a deal. Also, I would put a duct booster in to help push/pull the air. This shouldn't be too hard to wire into the unit's blower.

I didn't read all of your other thread, so I don't know if someone already mentioned it... instead of running ductwork thru the living space, running a mini split with the outside unit on a bracket hanging outside the window that you are planning to put the window unit in?

I would just get a mechanical AC (AKA one with knobs), and use something to turn the power on and off. You can go as simple or elaborate as you want. For my garage I used a web enabled thermostat to close a contactor to turn my AC or heat on:

It's probably a little over-the-top for your needs, but I just wanted to show you the principle.

why would you need Bluetooth or a phone ap? just curious, most decent units built in the last 15 years have built in temperature settings, timers, on off fan settings, etc. all with a remote or the control panel. set it and forget it.

I forgot about remotes, duh! You could get a standard infrared remote extender (like one you'd get for a stereo) to make the remote work in another room.

static pressure is what matters absolutely. I think it was a straight shot 6", but i don't know what was in the ceiling.

FWIW my kitchen fan is supposed to have 7" round, and i know it's 6", and reduces to a 4" dryer vent. I'll still take it over a non-vented hood, but a 4" reducer would definitely be a mistake on a portable AC.

I remember your original post. The NYS building code requires sleeping rooms to have openings for emergency use. If that bedroom does not have a second door to the outside or a window, it is illegal as a sleeping room. I hope nothing happens, or your son will have more trouble than he can imagine.

I agree, best to pay a little more rent to not support that type of landlord that puts people in illegally divided dwelling. It is hard to find something to rent that has at least one window, even in NY?

Depending on the unit, most window units don't come on when power is re-applied.

Get a wifi enabled unit with a cloud based control option. Bluetooth is short range. Fine if you are real close to the unit all the time.
