I've used 1 x 12 cedar for this. I ripped my own batts. You need horizontal blocking on 24" centers. Plywood alone is not enough backing. Leave a 1/4 to half an inch between and nail the batts through the gap.

I did mine with 1x8 rough sawn hemlock boards, had them milled to get a reverse board / batten look.
+1 on the horizontal 1x3 strapping.

I was looking for the main walls to be a board & batten and was looking to do a horizontal in my gable. I like that look. Is that a T1 11 cedar siding? Pic of our rancher pre and post change attached.

Like "The Shrine" shows. True board and batten siding - with individual boards - has entirely too many potential leaks. Do a full sheet of cement fiber siding and apply the battens over it if you want the look.

Yes, 4x8 sheets of HardieBoard and put the battens on top. WAY less work and more weather resistant.

Though its usually not thought of as ideal?......we have white Oak B&B.Its done pretty darn good.Though the house is mainly brick,we did side certain sections.
But reason for post was.....for me,you can't really have a discussion on B&B(board/batten) without at least mentioning AJ Downing.While he may not be all that "great" of an architect?......his promotion of B&B and country design was instrumental in shaping a lot of the "thoughts" we have today on the subject.

The OP asked specifically for "board & batten vertical siding"...that's what The Shrine has. When done correctly, with the right craftsman, B & B is a proven method to clad a building. Using the excuse of potential leaks is tantamount to claiming shingles on a roof are potential leaks and you shouldn't use them either.
Cheap and easy to get a "look" is an option. It was not an option for The Shrine.

My shed is board and batten ..."sort of". I cheaped out by using construction grade plywood and 1"x2" strapping. I built it in 1992 and it has held up well.

Sorry, I didn't look closely enough to see that you used individual boards - saw the HardiBoard comment and assumed that you were using the sheet goods.
I think the part about "when done correctly, with the right craftsman" is the key, though. Not enough of either with today's contractors...

The back of my garage has reverse B&B, I prefer that look over seeing he batten all the time. Another option is ship lapping the wood, which I will be doing next year for the front of my garage, using rough cut, 1x8 Eastern White Pine boards. Right now the wood is air drying/shrinking. Ship lapping will look like reverse B&B when finished.

I'm using water seal once a year applied w/ a pump sprayer. or it can be stained. It can be no maintenance but will gray out over time. Here is a link

Boy these are some beautiful shops! I love board and Batten siding. If I ever build again it will be done this way. Thanks everyone for sharing.
I've been wanting to do a rustic B&B siding on my barn for years. It like it to have a weathered look when done and raw rough wood. Reclaimed would be great but terribly expensive. Plus mine is a pole barn and I imagine if I hung B&B I would need to stick frame it for the extra weight. Ideally I'd want it to be finished something like this...

If you use a sealer or stain, it needs to be recoated every so often - depends on your local weather. Our former house had solid color stain while a neighbor's just let their cedar turn grey naturally. Their house was a lot less work... We had to re-stain every 3-5 years.
