Today is Noche Buena in our household, the Cuban traditional huge feast. We have two pork roasts, lots of side dishes like yuca, tostones, congris (white rice and black beans, mixed) and fried plantains. We're expecting a dozen family and friends.

I spent a bit of time yesterday installing a new 120 volt/20 amp GFCI box in a die-cast box, w/one of those 'in-service' plastic covers that allows you to keep the lid closed, and the extension cord plugged-in, so it stays nice and dry during the FL hurricanes. The purpose in the short-term was to provide a much-shorter drop cord run to the nativity scene we have in the backyard, for its internal illumination. There is also a Santa in his sleigh with reindeer needing a power source, Santa is wired for support into the palm trees next to the pool patio. At night, with the Three Wise Men marching-down one side of the pool towards the manger where Mary, Joseph, the shepherd and a lamb are waiting, the reflections off the pool water in the dark backyard actually look pretty. They're as-old as the kids, the oldest of-whom is approaching age 50.

Plus, for all my work on the side of the house, or for something to do in the backyard, I have another power source. I also have a 30 amp 240 volt access point, outside by the 120 volt GFCI duplex outlet.

Thank you Drives. The man to the left of Liane is our daughter's father-in-law. He's ten years older (to the day) than Liane.

They had one of those gender reveal parties several months ago (before the baby shower) and it was blue dust everywhere. I'm told that means it's going to be a boy. She is due the first week of January but she's being induced on the 27th. Makes sense financially I guess.

Philip, thank you for the kind words. We had brunch at our son's home Saturday and will have a nice lunch at our dauther's home tomorrow. I'll be warming up a standing rib roast New Year's Eve for the two of us (sorry Ellie, three of us).

We don't have anyone stopping by and all the celebrations happen at either our son's home, his son's home or our caughter's home. For that reason (and I'm getting lazy) we don't put out much in the way of decorations for the Holidays. We didn't even change the wreath on the front door but Liane put out a 6-inch tall tree on the dining room table to remind us of the season.

I've got a lot (too much) stuff that's older than my children. The little guy turned 55 this year.

Recovering from a big day yesterday.

Lyndon, we had lunch with our daughter and her family yesterday and did our best not to over-eat. I felt pretty good only going back for seconds. I'm relaxing now that it's boxing day (not celebrated much in the US) and tackled a little project in the garage.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring except for Bob.

Liane doesn't like a quiet house so there is always a TV on somewhere. As soon as the TV goes off (around 9:00 PM) an audio book gets turned on. The intercom system carries the sound to the master bedroom and there was no sound coming out Christmas Eve. I pushed buttons and twisted dials until I discovered I could get the sound back by holding down the END CALL button. Not wanting to take anything apart, I wedged a screw between the speaker housing and the END CALL button.

Now I have a problem. If I remove the master station to repair it, someone won't be lulled to sleep (and I may be put down). I'm hoping the wedged button works for a little while so I can make a more permanent fix. I can run some speaker wire from the audio system in the garage into the attic and down into the master bedroom, where I can hook up a pair of speakers.

This is a perfect opportunity to put a couple of Mini Advent bookshelf speakers to work. I don't remember where I got them but I didn't spend $10 on the pair. They've been in the garage for at least the past 22 years so I thought I'd inspect them while waiting for some speaker wire and a cheap multi-speaker amplifier. Not surprisingly, once I had the grilles off, the speakers needed a little repair.

The 5-1/4 inch speakers need new foam rings so I ordered a pair. The foam no longer has any life left and are not even attached to the speaker cone.

According to YouTube I need to clean all the glue and foam residue and suggested a box cutter to scrape it off the metal frame. I had a better idea, remembering the cheap set of wood carving chisels I bought from Harbor Freight. It worked perfectly.

Now I just have to wait for stuff to be delivered....

I used to make sub-woofers in college for beer money using EV speakers or old Klipsch I would find then later for designers whose Client’s husbands wanted surround sound but the wife didn’t want anything that looked like a speaker so I would build them into coffee tables, art stands etc.

JB, I had only seen this done recently. In the past I just bought new speakers when they came apart. So you're saying I might be wasting my time and money because I have no idea if these speakers even work? It didn't occur to me they came my way because they didn't work.

OK, I went to the garage and used my sophisticated speaker test setup and it turns out they work!

In the above photo, the black blob above the iPod is the screw holding the END CALL button depressed.

The replacement foam kit arrived this afternoon so maybe I can get that job done tomorrow.

Ah.... there is a past time I do not miss... replacing speaker surrounds.... Duker, I am always fascinated by the money-making work that college students find. I attended college at night and my full-time job provided milk money for my kids. On the plus side, night school attendees were older and Marist College had a Student/Faculty mixer every semester. The mixer was over when the last bottle of liquor was empty. That was back when drunk driving was a sport.

I had very little to do with this next project. My oldest grandson's wife did all the labor and my grandson did his tiny but important part. She had hoped to deliver naturally but things took a turn and she had to have an emergency C-Section. Mother and child are doing fine. My second great grandson joined the family too late for the picture but in time to become a dependent (tax deduction). I'm too old for this -- he already knows more about smart phones than me.

Thank you John! My paternal grandmother Mabel passed away when I was 3 but her mother Estelle lived another 6 years so I remember her well. Our birthdays were close -- hers was celebrated the day after mine. Estelle was born during the Civil War and I was born during the Second World War so we were kindred spirits. She also had a great sense of humor. She died on the fourth of July at age 88. I always thought of her as ancient but now that I'm 74 it feel like she was in her prime when she died.

In a world of weird coincidences, Liane's was celebrating her 4th birthday on the day grandma Mabel died.

Thank you Drives! Our grand-daughter-in-law had a temperature spike and labor slow down so the doctors recommended a C-Section. Little Spencer came out with his umbilical cord wrapped twice around his neck so it was a good decision. He's keeping up a family tradition -- I was born with the cord around my neck shortly before Dr. Quick (yeah, it was ironic) arrived at the hospital. The nurse knew what to do so here I am.

I too would have thrown out those speakers a few years ago but two things changed my mind. Our Saver, Vieux, and my brother Andy. The kit to fix the speakers was about $27 and I doubt I could find a comparable set for that price. Like you, I'm trying to organize my stuff and moving those two speakers from the top of a garage cabinet to the master bedroom frees up another cubic foot of space -- every little bit counts.

Because there were no family funerals, dismemberments or convictons in 2018, I can't imagine 2019 being better (my bar is pretty low).

Thank you Mark! My first great-grandson was born to a doomed relationship and lives in a 50-50 custody world. His father and grandfather will see him a lot more than me and I'm fine with that. The other issue is trust in me. I was quite capable of changing diapers one-handed but only Liane witnessed it. I'll get my hook into them when they're a bit older.

Kirk, I've only seen others do it on Youtube and read some instructions. It involved cleaning, cutting and gluing so I decided to give it a try. As usual, failure is an option but I'm hoping for success.
