Both hands and both feet, too.

I really do want to know the illustrator's name if it's referenced on the next page,

Couldn't find a credit for the illustrator anywhere in the book. I'm guessing this book probably had a dust jacket which is long gone. Perhaps illustration credit was on the dust jacket? This book was published by the the British motorcycle magazine "The MotorCycle". One of my favorite things about The MotorCycle magazine was they always had great engine cutaway drawings.

Maybe I can get away with posting this non-tools/non-garage related book that I just found today at the flea market, it being Veteran's Day and all. It does have a nice picture of a Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife in it.

It looks like a nice clean copy. I have several of Fairbairn's books in my collection. Rex Applegate also wrote some knife fighting books.

Found a couple of good ones lately. The brewing book was $2 at a thrift store, the locomotive encyclopedia $20 but usually is a LOT more, and the RR engineering book is real interesting as it is about rail layouts, train yard design, trestle design, and many other RR related engineering subjects, not much about locomotives or trains or rolling stock.

This isn't quite tools, but I will follow WisJim with my own brewing book, second edition published in 1977, 4th printing from May 1980, before I could legally drink. Great version, mostly applicable to modern (by then standards) of manufacturing brewing, from brewing to packaging. I've had it for 25+ years, since before I left the business. Doesn't look like anyone who was in our Company contributed, but lots of famous family names appear there.

Motor Cycle Data Book, published 1960. Interesting looking at the how many different makes of Motorcycles, Scooters, Mopeds, 3 Wheeled Light Cars and 4 Wheeled Light Cars there were then and how few have survived. I've also included a little tech data (on Vincent motorcycles) by way of example of what is covered in this little service guide book.

Royal Enfield 350 Bullet and 500 Bullet workshop maintenance manual 1954. I've included a pic of the wiring diagram, things were a lot simpler back then...

Set of 1917 vintage Automobile Engineering published by the American Technical Society. Lots of interesting information in some depth on automobiles, motorcycles, shop info, including gas engines, electric and steam cars. At $10 for the set I couldn't pass it up even though it is a little rough. They all still hold together and I haven't noticed any missing pages or other damage other than 105 years of wear and tear. With this set and a few volumes of Dykes, I should be all set for the pre1920 vehicles.

Some other books about motorcycles that are on my office shelves. The Modern Motorcycle Mechanics by Nicholson are 1974 and 1953 editions, and it is interesting to see the changes. The 74 version includes Japanese motorcycles and has a chapter on the "Chopper Craze". The 1974 edition still has info on machines like the Vincent, Velocette, and the Ariel square four.

Received these two books today as Christmas gifts, from my mom, of all people.

Both are copyright 1943, by Barger. Vol 1 and then a book which combines Vol 1 and 2 into one tome of 342pp. Both written to be pre-induction training/education for Army mechanics, at the height of the build-up by the US Army for World War 2.

There’s a bit of a shaggy dog backstory on these. A dearly departed friend left behind a copy of Vol. 2, which I found last year while visiting his son, who’s my age. This year I re-discovered Vol. 2, and knew that I’d get linked for Christmas gift ideas, and decided to be proactive. Bada boom, bada BING! One volume named to a library in Ada, ID, the other to a woman in S. Orange, NJ.

I usually walk right past the Chilton book section at the used book stores because its usually newer stuff that doesn't interest me, but this one caught my eye. Maybe I need to pay more attention. I'd love to have the other volume of this.

Those bring fond memories for me. My dad, a German refugee used to buy these and read them (70's & 80's). Reminds me of him whenever I see them. Saw many of the untouchable cars us 'Mericans weren't allowed to drive or buy. Could only look at the pictures though.....

As so often it's not the actual 'thing' itself which is most personally important to us, it's the associations and the memories and the people and their stories that it reminds us of.

Picked up two Navy booklets at the flea this morning. 'Hand Tools' (1951) is classic use and care. The 'Blueprints' (1944) is more how-to than use. I won't spam the thread with photos. Just some interesting or funny ones...

20230218_144005.jpg

Pic 1 below for some ID fun.
Pic 2 for 'me wants one'!
Pic 3 just because it's a nifty illo.
Pic 4 because we can all relate! :)
Pic 5 because of all the multiple-component Navy things they could've used to demonstrate an exploded view, they chose the side-arm!
Pic 6 just to give you an idea of how the book is designed.
Pic 7 for the "Varga pin-up" reference.

Hit a little Railroaders' trove at the flea this morning. Casually leafing through the Sep '45 magazine found an article on the famous trolley line I live on! See the branch going east down the peninsula toward the ocean from Red Bank. Now a coastal evacuation route.

Got a good book this week, a bound set of American Machinist magazine for the first half of 1925. Over a thousand pages 9x11, full of all kinds of interesting stuff relating to machining and machinery, from ads to how-to articles, overviews of specific jobs in certain industries, etc. (Someone had a set of 185 of these, 1879 to 1970, for only $9495, on eBay. Tempting but many times my book budget.)

I was elated to see this on a table full of used books in a house clean out lot at the flea yesterday. And even more elated that it was a 1942 edition! I see that @Copymutt posted his, which belonged to his grandfather, here.

I love old books! Especially reference books. I tend to focus on science, mechanics, refrigeration, first aid, food nutrition, and medicinal's.
my constant companion as a wee lad as it was in my God Parent’s cabin back in the mid 70s. As I recall, it had the most amazing color artwork of venomous snakes and toxic plants.

This is a great thread. Thank you all for sharing your books …

I've been collecting books for over 60 years. I have about 5000 hardbound volumes, mostly technical, military, and aviation. I have 50 years of Automobile Quarterly-200 volumes. The ones I don't keep are donated to the city library for their book sales.

One of the things I always look for when out and about, are older books on technical subjects; woodworking, HVAC, Welding, etc. And I have found quite a few to add to my book collection. And it is a nice way to tie together two of my passions, working with my hands and working with my mind.

So, without further ado, here are some of the highlights of my collection.

51124276703_ea005e252e_b.jpg
The Diesel book is from 1936, tuning is from '74.

51123804392_389b940b29_b.jpg
The Airplane Welding book is from '29 and Electric Motor repair is from the fifties, and is still the best book on the subject.

51123806627_8afdaf0e22_b.jpg
The classic South Bend lathe handbook, along with a nice treatise on using dynamite.

51124373816_9bce422327_b.jpg
The Early Motorcycle manual is not that old, the seventies, but finding anything that talks about these old machines is quite difficult. The machining book is from the teens, and the electroplating is from 1941.

51124374706_fae6e669c8_b.jpg
These are all from the fifties.

51124375881_1c033b7478_b.jpg
These are both from the twenties I believe, as the axe manual isn't dated.

51125183615_626d2d57df_b.jpg
The motor book is from the '80s, while the metrology book is wartime.

51123812992_19505d25db_b.jpg
Aircraft repair is from the thirties, while the radio-TV is from the fifties.

51124380241_862c2bfdc6_b.jpg
Of course, we need some tool catalogs from the teens and twenties.

51124388181_057fb32389_b.jpg
And some early books on transportation repair.

51123823267_68c5826d05_b.jpg
Teach yourself how to fly!

51124137104_4d47e859db_b.jpg
Some wartime books on HVAC repair.

51125200960_d8d64d0184_b.jpg
Gunsmithing books from the '30s-'40s

51125618928_f522cdaa1b_b.jpg
And finally, some nautical-themed books. They are from the '20s, 40s, and '50s respectively.

And that is only a representative sample, from just going through the shelves upstairs. There are many actual working books in my shop and a few on my bookshelves on the first floor.
Hello RD,

Thanks for posting your collection of vintage technical books up here! I had taken a hiatus from searching them out but this post piqued my interest a bit.

I started looking online for the Iconic Rosenberg Electric Motor book and the ones I found started at 45 bucks, upwards to 100 plus.

I saw one on the bay late last night , a 1946 edition. It was around $30 plus….I ended up putting it on my watch list and I just received an offer of $20 shipped! Needless to say it’s enrt.

It’s signed by what looks like the original owner, from 1946. It’s in excellent shape. Now I’m looking for the axe book !

Stay safe !

Shawn
