Having "the book thrown at you" is metaphorical, of course, but in the case of these 1941 US Navy Regulations, it might hurt a little. As I was saying on the Garage Sale thread, where I first reported finding this at the flea market this morning, the Remington Rand "Kanvas" binding is almost as interesting to me as the content. That little latch on the mechanism locks or releases the green "thongs" when you want to remove or add pages. Fascinating that they still identify it as a 1920 publication, updated with twenty-three changes.

Very nice. I suppose when updates were issued you would remove the old section and insert the new one, and the Regulations would be updated without wastage of the unchanged sections. The old printed Land Rover Defender manuals function like that, one could just replace a few pages to update, except they use a ring binder.

Precisely. I have the 1939 Federal Standard Stock Catalog, in three (3) books similar to these, and as fat as these, and a similar but different binding system. Some of the specifications for some of the items are simply reprints from much earlier, some have page changes (green paper), and some are newly published.

Well, metaphorical or not, the book that was thrown at you, in the USN, was that book!

When being sentenced "before the mast" after a court-martial, the relevant chapters would be read--including the prescribed punishment.

I found this book for £5 at my local car boot sale on Sunday. I'm giving it to my friend who has a Bentley special similar to the red one in the second picture (his is even the same red).

Originally published in 1969, this edition is the 1978 reprint which includes the revisions made in 1974. The book is still being published but it now has corrections/revisions/additions by a further three authors.

I found a few interesting books at a thrift store yesterday. The "Organ Construction" book is a 1990 reprint of a 1910 book on pipe organs--knowledge I probably will never need. The "Experimental Flash Steam" book is about boilers for steam engines and will keep me occupied for awhile. I hadn't read the Friedman book before, and the Civil War book looks interesting.books bought.jpg

the Civil War book looks interesting.
Does it mention what eventually happened to the blockade runner 'Cornubia', by any chance? She was so fast that often even today i sometimes can't beat the journey time!

@Farmer J, the book only has a short paragraph about the Cornubia, and no mention of her fate. It's interesting that her top speed (18 knots) is mentioned, and it isn't mentioned for most of the vessels in the book.

Thanks for having a look. I sometimes wonder if she's sunk and buried at the bottom of the Mississippi, and maybe one day the wreck will come to light!
The pub in Hayle named The Cornubia is still open (with a nice picture on the sign), there was one in Bristol too so as passengers could stay comfortably at either end of her voyages, and connect with the fast trains Bristol to London on Brunels Great Western Railway.

Exactly. they were still using a similar system, at least for the Navy Manual of the Medical Department, in the 1970s, and maybe even up to today. Periodic revision pages would be sent with specific instructions regarding what pages to replace what. A bit more time consuming to remove and replace pages, but the bindings were more robust than a three ring binder, which tended to tear pages at the three holes.

And this binder, with several different manuals, including these on MV O&M, from late 1941 and early 1942. So, you think you could've been a truck driver during WWII, huh? How's your field of vision, depth perception, reaction time, and stability?!

Spent some time going through some boxes of paper this morning at the flea and pulled this keeper out.

20240526_105524.jpg

The cover story (Autolite EV) and the lead story are interesting, at least as much and maybe moreso today as January 1969. But I also like the supercar spec tables (see thumbnails below) and the ads, especially this Paul Williams illo....

20240526_105113.jpg

...and this one trolling Enzo Ferrari's infamous quote...

I almost passed on this book at a thrift store, but after paging through it a bit, I decided to buy it. It goes into detail about estimating the time spend on many machining operations and in doing so it explains the use of some machines and tools that I don't know much about. So it now sits on my bookshelf.

Ran into some good paper at the flea this morning.

These Standard Oil folders concealed several Sears, Roebuck & co. special catalogs from the 1936 to 1940 timeframe.

A while ago, there were a couple of posts about old set of Audel's Engineer's and Mechanic's Guide. At the time I had only volume four, but I found a full set of 8 at a good price, so now they are in my bookcase and I have a spare volume 4. Also, I went to a estate sale, run by the family and friends, and books were 10 for a dollar. Needless to say, I spent a few bucks. Lots of cookbooks and romance novels which I passed, but I bought bags of decent hardcover novels and some local history, and music cds and LPs were also 10 for a dollar. Now I have new music to listen to, lots of fiction to read, and over $60 in credit at the used book store from copies that duplicated my library.Audel set.jpg
They actually are in nicer condition than they appear in the picture. Those bindings show a lot of wrinkles.

As an added bonus, it was stuffed full of these one-pagers on other WWII aircraft. The flip side is the description and specs. Check out the little tab on the right side of each page. These are loose leaf and did not come with the book.
