Next question:
storage tank or no? Our plumber didn't suggest one, but is there a strong argument to install one? I suppose knowing flow rates and pressures would help determine that... And if one is recommended, what size? 7-10 gallons like
@larry4406 mentioned, or something larger?
Well, I've got a well-recommended plumber coming Monday AM to take a look and see if there are any other pump and storage tank suggestions. Thanks everyone for your helpful info, it will definitely guide us in the right direction. Should have an update after the Monday visit.
The system I discussed in my prior post has a pressure tank with internal bladder and is not referred to as a storage tank.
The system is installed inline between the incoming water service and the house main line. It takes the incoming water which is at low pressure, injects it into the bladder tank and increases the pressure in the bladder tank. The bladder tank pressure is monitored with a pressure switch like that used on a well system. As the house pressure (downstream of the bladder tank) drops, the pump kicks on and sequence repeats. A key small but important detail is the installation of a spring check valve upstream of the unit.
In my opinion, the bladder tank (pressure tank) is vital. Not to be confused with an "open" storage tank which has no pressure (such as used with rain water harvesting or water radon mitigation systems).
The ones in the houses I discussed looked like these
