I bought one of these about 6 months ago for around $50. It's tiny. It has a range of over 50-feet. It rules. And now, Bosch is selling the damned thing for $35. If you don...

I did the same thing....now it's $35?! Oh well. It already more than paid for itself for me as I work alone. Great for doing quick take-offs for customer estimates. Recently I used it simply to see how high I needed to go to do some siding repair work and to get a rough estimate of the area of siding....all from the ground. Wish I had bought one earlier.

I've got the Craftsman laser measure that I picked up at a pawn shop for $20 (its bigger, but it measures to around 125').
I tested it by shooting the distance across my office's atrium. First by sitting it on a doorframe and shooting a door across the building (around 90'), and then by moving it to the wall next to the frame, and saw the size increase by 3/8" (the amount the frame extended in front of the wall). I was duly impressed.

Still, in doing some layout for the hanging of my kitchen cabinets, I found places where the tolerances were 1/32 or less, where I just didn't trust it. It's an AMAZING tool for estimating, but has its limitations.

I bought the GLM 80 a few months ago. It has an inclinometer so you can measure angles, and also get horizontal/vertical measurements without having to be level.

That came in real handy when I was measuring the distance from a deck beam to the house, but the pool was in the way. Just angle it up to clear the pool, and it gives you the horizontal distance based on the angle [distance = hypotenuse * cos (angle)] .

I have been thinking about getting one but how accurate are they ? + or - .??

I got one of these for my birthday 7 months ago, and I use it like crazy. I didn't know I wanted one, and I wouldn't have bought it myself (I would have been mistaken).

IIRC, mine is rated to 1/8" accuracy at 50'. Bear in mind, this is probably partially linear error and partially offset error. So it's hard to say what it would be at 25', but assuming the offset error is somewhat negligible, it may be around 1/16" at 25'.

I looked at the Bosch about a year ago when I was looking to buy a laser, and even then the $50 price made the Bosch very attractive. (At $35 - it's hard to beat)

I did end up spending quite a bit more and bought the Leica Disto E7100i ($150) It has quite a bit more range (200' versus 50') and better accuracy (1/16" versus 1/8")

The main selling point of the Leica for me me was the BlueTooth technology - it will automatically send the measurement to you an app on your cell phone or tablet and you can then place it directly into a sketch or a spreadsheet

Again, it's not for everyone, but if your looking for a step up, you should check it out

Having just become a real estate agent in the spring I have been wanting to get one of these. Now that its recommended by the boss...

Just don't leave it in a house! I sold my house a few months ago and found one sitting in the bathroom when I stopped by to move some more stuff. No idea who left it since I had about a dozen people through there.

I've used it to hang lights at work. Great for making sure they are all exactly 45' from the floor! I didn't think it would be very useful, but when working in a lift, its really handy!

I had a trum-meter (measuring wheel). Had the thing for about 20 years. Naturally one of my kids stepped on it. Went to the store and I guess that type of tool is not relevant anymore. I bought the Bosch pictured in the article and it is really great. I would put it against any measuring tape, never mind the old measuring wheel.

Bosch offers one as well, which I'd prefer over the Leica since it allows you to dimension both pictures and floorplans.

I have a very similar product from Fluke (saw the Bosch, but I've been using Fluke everything for years and years without a single problem, regardless of the level of abuse) so I bought Fluke.

Awesome tool. The Fluke one that I have also automatically calculates square footage and volume, which is occasionally useful. I'm sure Bosch has a similar offering.

I can see the usefulness of it if you are a contractor or need to quickly measure longer distances. But for the average home owner I'm not sure the +/- 1/8" accuracy is anything I would frequently use.

Over the width of a room, the curvature of a tape measure is going to leave you off by at least as much as that 1/8", when the laser is always taking a straight path.

I wonder if the features of the GLM 30 is worth the extra $14 on ebay. Any feedback from those with the GLM 15?

Here's what they added to the GLM 15, in addition to it being a little larger:
The GLM 30 has a range of 100 ft and sports a new backlit LCD display. Additional measurement features include area/volume, indirect measurements, and plus/minus operations.

nice...

I have a 100' fiberglass reel tape measure that I use to measure out our rink in the backyard. This year it's 55x27'... I might buy it if it did more than 50'.

I think my tape reel was at least $25cdn....

After using it for the first time on the job site I would say yes.
Besides that it is a very handy thing, I had to cut some 2x's for a
temporary support for a vaulted ceiling and it made it pretty easy.

I started shopping these guys thanks to this thread, had pretty well settled on a GLM50 on ebay for $78. Then with these on my mind I was poking around the pawn shop today and spotted a GLR225 kinda buried in a display case for $89, ended up getting it for $65 out the door. Still in the package, but package had been opened. I don't think it was ever turned on though because the included batteries were still wrapped in plastic.

Nice find FigureItOut, I am still excited about the GLM 15 which makes a lot of measuring so much easier and more precise, +/- 1/8" is not really a big deal for most of the stuff I am doing right now and I can see myself getting a model with more features in the near future.

Lowe's is clearing these out for an updated model (adds a backlight, but only 1" accuracy), picked it up for $25.
