I love modular stuff... It's just fun to organize and play with and... STACK! And that's kind of the idea behind the new Bosch L-Boxx system. Bosch has created a number of ...

I like this. This is one of the reasons why I love the Festool tools. They come boxes that you can stack, and click into each other. They also have a cart piece that you can click into the bottom so that you can roll the entire stack.

I like this. Most likely will be better priced than the Festool stuff too.

I like my Festool Systainers, and they are tough. They tend to be a bit larger than they need to be for the tool and assorted stuff, though.

I looked at the Bosch stuff a couple of days ago. I didn't think the container quality was quite as good as Festool, but for the avg. hobbyist it wouldn't make any difference. And as slickgt noted, Festool is not cheap, and can be tough to find, especially in a hurry when you need a part.

I would love some of those. Especially for mobile work when I go to friends houses to tinker on their cars or to go to the junk yard...

hmm what do I need? Metric sockets, wrenches, and the vice grip case...

Would love to try that-- would make migrating from the garage to the pit box a whole lot easier!
Or migrating from the truck at the shop to the work bays.

They are made for Bosch by Sortimo in the UK. They make one called the T-Boxx that is awesome for parts storage. I first heard about them in Make magazine, the did a story on Adam Savage and showed them in his work shop. I contacted the US distributor but they were not a lot of help. You can only buy them from them, the price was high, and no volume discount. Hopefully Bosch will start selling the T-Boxx also. Jack

They look interesting.

Soon I'll be done with my summer reports and I have some time in my schedule before I get hit up to start writing follow-up performance reports. If you can get a sample set to me within the month I could get them some exposure at a couple of race/track events. Additionally, if you can wait till mid November for the write-up I can get them in front of some of the guys before we sit down for our annual planning conference.

My policy is that if you want them back you provide the return shipping.

The Sortimo metal cases are nicer.

Those are pretty neat for people who work in relatively clean settings....but in a real world situation like what is pictured, it would probably not work too well since if you un-clicked it and set it down on the muddy ground, then you put it back together, all kinds of **** will fall onto the section underneath, probably foul the latching mechanism, cursing ensues, etc....

My biggest gripe with the plastic cases like these and the Festool Systainer is the wasted interior space.

It would be hard to do in metal.

Sortimo has a new product called simpleco. Looks a lot like these Bosch boxes.

www.simpleco.com

Unfortunately, Sortimo has only 1 USA distributor. I have been trying to have some design work done, and it is frustrating. Either they are really busy with high dollar work, or they are not interested in individual (vs institutional or corporate) customers.

But, I will probably order some more of their metal cases.

Their stuff is expensive because it is NOT made in China.

Sortimo t-boxx and metal case. The metal case is two layers. The plastic boxes inside are interchangeable.

Bosch is selling something similar to the T-Boxx in the states.

Bosch L-Boxx with storage inserts

I'm thinking about a 6" deep L-Boxx with a custom divider / 2 tier tray to store my 12V Max tools in - 2 of the pocket drivers, an impact, and the mini recip along with a charger and batteries.

Bosch is selling something similar to the T-Boxx in the states.

Not to be too picky, but the Bosch product is more like the Sortimo L-Boxx.

The T-Boxx is a parts tray with a transparent lid.

The Sortimo metal version is simply called the Sortimo Case. This is their legacy product.

Sortimo also has a M-Boxx that is designed as a drawer container- it fits onto their standard vehicle racking.

The Sortimo Case can be ordered and configured into a variety of layouts. It is really confusing if you have little familiarity with the product. I'm sure that the only USA distributor of this stuff loves questions... :)

There are two sizes (heights) of those little colored plastic trays. The double height Sortimo Case uses the same inserts as the T-Boxx, and probably the L-Boxx.

The plastic trays can probably be used in stuff like Lista toolboxes. You can buy them separately.

The grey inserts in the L-Boxx is where the useless space is. Those are not configurable due to the shape of the plastic box.

The double layer metal case in my pictures, as delivered with tray and inserts, is ~$240.00.

The T-Boxxes run ~$90 each.

A good part of the price is the plastic inserts. I would suggest buying one that has a variety of insert sizes, then order extras.

The T-Boxxes are built really well. What doesn't show up well in the pictures (even in the Sortimo catalog) is the deep embossing in the lid to keep the inserts in place (note- the top of the clear lid is smooth). There are also locator points on the bottom. The plastic inserts, used in the T-Boxx, will not move around if you take some of them out... like 10x better than the Stanley stuff at the big box stores.

The Sortimo Case does not have any locating or retention points, so they have to be full of the plastic inserts to keep them in place. If you look closely at the picture labeled "empty", you can see the slots made to hold the dividers available for the metal Case. A removable tray keeps the upper layer of inserts together. They won't fall out, unless you take something out of the middle.

These are unique items that can take organization to the next level.

All are 17.5" x 14" - in either 4.5", 6", 10" depth
LBOXX 1 $49.99 4.5" inches deep
LBOXX 2 $96.99 6 inches deep
LBOXZ 3 $96.99 10 inches deep
LBOXX 4 $106.99 15inches deep

At $350.00 for a set of one each - - - they are silly expensive... If they were half as much they would still be overpriced. If they were $14.55 to $24.95 each they might find a lot uses...

I'm afraid that all the solutions in this thread stop well short of having anything considered a complete modular storage and transport system.

Just my opinion..

Yes, they are expensive.

Sortimo offers a modular storage and transport system that will work with these... and it isn't inexpensive, either.

Guess it depends on what your time is worth and if you can make something that works for you for less.

I know someone with a bunch of Festool stuff, and each box has a different group of tools. Put the boxes together for your task, and get started.

There are only 2 ways this stuff will get cheaper: (1) US dollar increases in value and/or (2) these boxes are knocked off in China.

I have one of the larger (size 3) L-Boxxes I've been testing. It's a neat idea and a very well made box. I can't test the stacking capabilities as I only have one, but the latches feel pretty nice.

L-Boxx vs. Systainer, I'd pick the L-Boxx. They feel about the same, but I think the L-Boxx has a better stacking mechanism.

If anyone is considering a high-end storage/transport system like this, wait a bit until the Dewalt system is out, and then decide which is best for your needs. http://toolguyd.com/2011/06/dewalt-tough-system-portable-tool-storage-preview/

The Dewalt boxes are thicker than the L-Boxxes, and feel somewhat like comparably sized Pelican cases. It's not that I think the Dewalt boxes are better, but I happen to like them more from what I've seen thus far.

Yes, I quite agree. These do not seem to be aimed at the consumer market. If you can save time and make money with them - they are at least priced competitively for now.

There are only 2 ways this stuff will get cheaper: (1) US dollar increases in value and/or (2) these boxes are knocked off in China.

Or perhaps if WalMart puts in an order for a couple billion of them - and insists on consumer pricing.

High profit items sold in low volumes can significantly increase a companies ROI and ROA ratio numbers... and help boost its stock price. Although not actually adding many dollars to the over-all revenue figures.

That will happen until someone like RubberMaid decides that there would be a vast consumer market...

FWIW,
Carl B.

Festool has redesigned their latching mechanisim.
I am aware. I have two T-latch Systainers. One of them arrived with the green T-latch popped off and at the bottom of the box. I didn't say they're bad, because they actually work quite well. But I prefer the Bosch latches a little better. My preference is not a reflection of latch build quality or anything like that.

Just figured I'd mention it.

I figured that people reading this and not really knowing about the Festool items may not know that Festool has redesigned their stuff.

I have a lot of Festool tools. All of them with boxes (that's how they come). Some of the boxes are not super great for carrying other things around, but the tool and its parts, blades, sanding disks, etc etc still fits in them, and makes a nice storage and transport option. I still have a tool bag for the hand tools, but that is because a box has never worked out for me at all.

You want to have a bunch of tools ready on the go. Get this.

Stuey, those Dewalt boxes look great, and they aren't retarded expensive. Looking forward to your review.
If I can't get a sample I'll likely still buy one or two. Cheaper than a pelican case, I may pick one up to use for my less delicate photo gear.

I am moving my Workvan to all systainers! place some Kaizen foam in the bottom and voila your golden  Actually I was on a job last week and contractor had the new bosch L-Box and as he was walking down the stairs the bottom two fell off and rolled down the stairs, dented the hardwood floor pretty good. Needless to say, I was not impressed :willy_nil neat idea though

I bought a Bosch Jig Saw and it came in one of those boxes. It has separators for the specific tool that came in it. I can't imagine filling those with tools them trying to pick them up stacked together. It would be heavy as hell to carry with that one handle. Even more than two with drills, saws etc would be kind of heavy. The only advantage I see is they would stack nicely together when storing and take up less space.

Usually I carry a Lboxx-3 and Lboxx-2 stacked together, both pretty full, or an Lboxx-4 by itself. They aren't too heavy though just to be safe I walk sideways through doorways and such.

MINI, did you try the hand tool box that Festool makes? I definitely prefer the foam you did, but have looked at that as a possibility. I've seen Systainers come apart as well, especially off the drawer tracks. Lboxx isn't perfect I will admit, but I think the reason Systainer would be less likely is it's smaller floor/lid area means if things were loose, they couldn't shift as much. Definitely the foam is the right way to go though.

I thought about it and i still may for the rest of the tools i need to keep on the van but only use it on 5% of the jobs we do. Those three systainers can get me through 95% of installations!

Im slowly converting my van over to a full systainer system, my shelves in the van house them perfectly, hopefully get myself so organized i can move out of a full size van into a Transit Connect
