Breaker Size For Window A/C Unit?

Hey fellas!

I'm going to pick up an A/C unit for the garage.. think i found the one I want:

Electrical Requirements
Volts: 230/208 Volts
Frequency: 60 Hz.
Amps: 15 Amps
Rated Amps: 7.5 Amps

I currently have an unused 240 line in the garage with a 20A breaker (2 pole) which I planned on using for the A/C unit. Will this be alright? I'm not too sure on the "Amps vs. Rated amps" specs above. Are they listing "Amps" as Full Load Amps?

What size breaker do you guys suggest? Seeing as it's 20A in there currently, I assume the wiring is 12 awg.

Here's a pic of the breaker - I have no idea where all those labels are from, lol

At the worst the 20A GFCI breaker will have to be replaced with a 15A 2-pole model, what make of panel? I am seeing Siemens and Murray/Crouse-Hinds breakers installed.

It is a Murray panel. It's in a family member's garage. Was installed this way 15+ years ago from an electrician friend. I think he used a subpanel he had laying around.

So, am I correct in assuming that the "Rated Amps" is what the unit will be using when it's running, and what they have listed as "Amps" is full load amps, like when the A/C kicks on?

I believe that size window AC should have a cord with a 6-20 plug. If so use a 20A circuit with a 6-20R outlet. Check the specs of the unit for the plug type.

Page 9 of the owner's manual for an LG LW1816ER air conditioner shows that it comes with a 15 amp plug, and says to use a circuit with a 15 amp time delay fuse or a 15 amp circuit breaker. So, that's pretty clear.

One note: the way I wrote my post it made it seem a GFCI was required, 240V receptacles in a residential garage do not require GFCI protection.

Thank you everyone. I didn't even see that it listed the plug type - 6-15p. Also didn't find an owner's manual - guess I didn't look hard enough!

The 240v line currently in place in the garage comes from the subpanel to the garage door through conduit, then to an electrical box which has a long extension cord coming straight out of it - was used for a refrigerated van in the past. So, I assume the best way for me to go about this would be to purchase and install a 15A 6-15p receptacle in place of that electrical box and extension cord?

The breaker description says "Accepts 14awg wire." If there's currently a 20A in there, which should be 12awg, will I have any issues?

Thanks for dealing with my questions, I'm 1000% better with Automotive wiring :lol:
