I love Grip Edge and own lots. All the other extractors I’ve tried are all tapered. They don’t grip on much surface area. The Grip Edge ones are parallel. For broken pipe *******, the tapered square drive ones work or though. Broken bolts, not so much.

The Proto set works very well in my experience. Just follow the instructions and select the correct size drill bit.

1. Drill through the broken bolt with the correct size drill bit for the extractor ( drill size printed directly on each extractor )
2. Tap the extractor in with a hammer
3. Turn extractor out pulling the broken bolt with it

My advice is to buy every single extractor type you come across. There is no one size fits all for removing stuff. As for the grip edge I have had great luck with the MAC version of those.
This is the facts. You never know what one will save the day.

This is what matters more than brand or style. Once I learned how to properly use them and pick the correct size, I never had an issue with any extractor I've tried.

It's the E-Z out style that I advise people to stay clear of. The more you turn the E-Z out, the more it puts outward pressure on the broken bolt until the E-Z out snaps.

I have a bunch. My go-to's are either going to be grip edge or rigid.

I do not have the square set but I've only heard good things about them... I have many different varieties of the spirals that I owned before I bought the Ridgid and then later the gripedge.

Can someone suggest a good broken bolt extractor set? Left hand drill bits and extractors themselves? I was looking at grip edge but not sure if the premium price is worth it.

Best extractors:

As said, the old school spiral ones seem to break most often- there is a reason why there have been improvements in extractors in the last 50 years. The reality is that you need to know when to stop cranking on an extractor and move on to plan B. If you already broke the bolt head off on something rusted into place by cranking on it full force, then don't expect an extractor to survive and remove what's left unless maybe you break out heat from an oxy acetylene torch.
