I have broken a bunch of wrenches over the years. Mostly I break the box end because I always use the box end when something really does not want to move.
Biggest one I broke was a craftsman 1" wrench box end.
A forend and I were working on his tractor trying to remove a bolt that had been in there for years. It liked were it was and was holding hands really tight with the rest of the tractor.
So both of us had two hands on the wrench, one foot on the ground and one foot on the tractor so we could have maximum pull.
The box end shattered, my friend ended up face down in the dirt, I stubled around, twisted the heck out of ankle and the ended up face in the dirt.
So I ended up with a twisted ankle, a broken wrench, and a bad attitude.
Told my friend he had to keep soalking the thing and we would try again next week.
On the way home I figured I would go to Sears to swap the wrench out.
Take it into Sears and a dumb punk kid behind the counter looks at the broken wrench with some amazement.
Conversation weny like this.
Him. How did you break this?
Me. I pulled on it.
Him. I have never seen anyone break on if these.
Me. Ok, I pulled hard on it.
Him. You don't look like you would be strong enough to break this.
Me. What do you want to arm wrestle over it....go get me another wrench
